With panoramic views of tidal marshlands, woods and preserve, the estate includes two newly renovated, historic homes, a multi-level barn, and an unparalleled view of the sunset. Every element has been thoughtfully restored— retaining the perfect amount of charm combined with present-day luxury. We rent the entire estate for four nights, from Thursday to Monday and can comfortably sleep 26 guests. Surrounded by stunning views and Maine salt air, we are just 15 minutes from downtown Portsmouth, NH and the fine restaurants, arts, and culture of the Seacoast. We also don't have enough positive things to say about the Scotland Fields team. My husband and I had a very specific vision about how we wanted our weekend to come together, and the team was nothing but accommodating to allow us to create the weekend that we envisioned. They were responsive when we had questions, helpful when we needed recommendations and guidance, and prompt to resolve anything that came up throughout the weekend (not that there was much of anything to resolve!!). Our story begins in 1858 when Frank Jones arrived in Portsmouth with a dream of brewing ale. Within three decades, The Frank Jones Brewery became the largest ale producer in the country. As ale production expanded, the brewery added a cooperage and scald house to clean the barrels. Workers used scalding hot rocks to sanitize barrels because soap and water would cause them to warp. Once cleaned, the barrels were filled with Jones’ signature ales. The Hawthorn now occupies this Scald House, retaining its original red-brick walls, towering beams, and industrial windows. “Cheers,” then, has a whole new meaning at The Hawthorn. When you raise your glass at your event, you’ll be toasting in a place that’s positively brewing with Portsmouth ale-making heritage and local history.
