The Home and Farm have been passed down through 8 generations of the Miller family. In 1827, John Miller Sr. purchased the land from Francis Thornton and built a modest family home with his son, “Poplar John”. The simple rectangular structure was built from bricks fired on the bank of the Thornton River and trees harvested from nearby Turkey Mountain. Sixty years later, John Byron made substantial additions including the present-day Owner’s Suite, Queen’s Room, and sitting porches.

Come celebrate in nature on a developing organic farm on the one-of-a-kind Smith Forbes Historic Site. There are several large fields and a barn that is available for your event. Also on the site is a working farm with a small number of friendly goats, chickens, and pigs. Access to acres of private forest land with route to Rappahannock River. The property features five private cabins, a main house with three bedrooms, a ceremony gazebo, outdoor fireplace and kitchen, and a tent pad with a seasonal 30' x 50' white top tent. We also provide 100 chairs and 12 tables for your event. The Trellis is best described as “Airbnb meets event venue”—a unique, non-cookie-cutter space designed to feel like your home away from home for the weekend. One of the things our couples love most is the flexibility—we allow you to bring in your own food and beverages, and we’re always happy to share vendor recommendations if helpful.
