I moved to Buffalo, NY about 6 years ago. Why Buffalo? Because my wife grew up here. I was born and raised in Münster, Germany and lived most recently in Vienna, Austria. I worked as a journalist for financial newspapers, websites and magazines. I wrote mainly about tech companies such as Apple, Facebook, Google among other things. As part of my job I was exposed to photography and filmmaking and discovered a passion. It didn’t take long for family and friends to ask me to photograph their weddings. I realized how much fun it was to be part of such an emotional day which you remember for a lifetime.

Your wedding photos should feel like your wedding, not a photoshoot with a wedding squeezed in. I love the editorial, frame-worthy portraits just as much as anyone, but the moments I'm really chasing are the ones you didn't even realize happened. The deep breath before you walk down the aisle. Your grandma absolutely tearing it up on the dance floor. Your partner looking at you like they just won the lottery. Those are the photos that somehow become everyone's favorites.

I love to take pictures and I always have. For me, it started with spending time with my father in the darkroom as we developed black and white film. In high school, I went to Rochester's School of the Arts and focused on photography. Over the years, I have enjoyed working with so many beautiful couples on their wedding days, and I feel truly blessed to be the one chosen to be behind the lens. Let me preserve your special moments through photography, while you enjoy your day worry free, knowing that I have it covered.

When I'm not working, you can find me hitting live shows or adventuring with my wife and cat, Riesling. About my work: 10+ years of experience shooting both on-location and in the studio. Use of off-camera lighting, which allows me to add a creative flair when natural light isn't quite enough. I’ll crawl through cattails, get pelted with silly string, and wade out waist deep in the ocean, just to get the perfect shot. My goal is to make YOU feel comfortable and at ease so we can create compelling imagery for your special occasion or event.

I'm Matt at Burkhartt Photography, and I specialize in documentary-style weddings and natural, organic portraiture. If you are planning a wedding of any size that you want to feel intimate and cozy, I may be the right choice for you. When it comes to portraiture, I strive for the session to feel relaxed and low-pressure, like friends hanging out to avoid posed images that feel overly stiff and stilted. I want to communicate well with people to understand the ways they are comfortable showing their love to create the most natural and beautiful images possible.
