About Mama Juke

Mama Juke (Jon Wert)

Mama Juke is a gumbo of New Orleans influenced blues, blue-eyed soul, funk, and folk. Actor/singer Elijah Bridges brings elements of bluegrass and rag with his soulful harmonica, acoustic guitar, and voice. Amos Rose is a world traveling multi-instrumentalist who also sings and plays lead Telecaster guitar, and was recently featured by Jazz at Lincoln Center. Brendan O’Grady is an in-demand session musician and fixture on the greater New York scene since his roots growing up in Yonkers. Drummer Jon Wert is a sought-after musician, collaborating with a wide variety of artists in the jazz, rock, pop production shows and songwriter worlds.

The band has original music as well as a crowd-pleasing repertoire of cover songs, some well known, others more obscure gems. They've held a weekly residency at East Village Social, a St. Marks music hub in the heart of the East Village, since September 2015. The Village Voice once described their performance as "a party volcano!" They are known for bringing an energetic, uplifting show that engages any audience. The combination of wide genre variety, excellent vocal harmonies, dazzling instrumentalism and years of experience playing together is what always gets a crowd on their feet at a Mama Juke show!

    Mama Juke Wedding Review

    Mama Juke was absolutely incredible at our wedding! They played for both our ceremony and cocktail hour, and their music truly set the perfect vibe for each part of the day. We had to make some last-minute adjustments due to rain, and they were so flexible and accommodating, handling everything with ease. From the moment we started working with them, they were easy to communicate with and completely professional. Our guests couldn’t stop raving about how amazing they sounded, and they really made the whole day feel extra special. We’re so grateful to Mama Juke for making our wedding unforgettable, and we would highly recommend them!

    We love Mama Juke!

    We had the honor of having Mama Juke perform at our wedding in September 2024. First off, they are all incredible musicians and put on an absolutely awesome performance for us. We had so many guests comment that it was the best music they ever heard at a wedding. In terms of communication prior to our wedding day, they were also extremely responsive and professional. This band is incredible and really goes the extra mile to make your occasion memorable and stress-free. We can't recommend Mama Juke enough, thank you guys!

    The best of the best!

    Mama Juke made our wedding reception into the party of our dreams! They were so easy to plan with and truly brought the most incredible vibes to the dance floor. I can’t recommend them enough!!

    Wonderful band to work with!

    We booked Mama Juke for our 9/24/2022 wedding and they did not disappoint. I can’t say I wasn’t nervous, as they didn’t have any reviews posted yet, but Jon was very helpful in addressing all our concerns and they kept our guests entertained and dancing all night long! They learned our first dance song- Golden Hour by Kacey Musgraves and put their own flair to it, which we loved. They are such a fun mix of rock, jazz, bluegrass, country and played a good mix of songs for all ages. I would also recommend listening to some of their original songs and including them in your day, my husband and I were so happy we did. :) I want to have another wedding just so we can have them play again!

Very flexible in approach from totally casual to black suit and tie. Our standard look is "casual rockstar," dark pants with buttoned shirts and a few vests and/or jackets.
We have a very broad repertoire of 400+ songs and generally can play a song by an artist even if it's not the exact request. However we do offer to learn 1 or 2 songs for weddings if you have something specific in mind for first dance, etc. Learning more than a couple songs is absolutely an option as well but we would have to discuss compensation.
We often have clients say they love us because we're not like a typical wedding band. We play many songs that are dear to us so we bring that level of engagement and authenticity. Our vocal harmonies are very strong. We tend to color most arrangements with bit of Americana/roots rock feel with harmonica and acoustic guitar mixed with electric. And our rhythm section is unstoppably soulful!
Yes! Before hand and in real time. We have a long list of tunes to choose from and know a number of other songs that aren't even on the list.
Yes, we're experience with a variety of wedding scenarios and can break down into an acoustic folk/instrumental duo or trio for ceremonies and cocktail hour. And we have a wide variety of jazz and bossa nova songs we could play for earlier in the evening, perhaps during cocktails, to add a wider variety of music for the whole engagement, switching to rock and dance for the reception.

We frequently take out affordable 1-day insurance policies for specific engagements if the venue requires it or client requests it.
Live Jukebox, all music from the past century plus. Heh, we have a wide variety of styles from early folk/blues and jazz up through current music. Our cream of the crop tends to be music from the 50's, 60's and 70's. And we tend to flavor songs with a New Orleans and bluegrass aesthetic, adding more soulfulness and instrumental flourishes to standard and lesser-known songs from all eras.
We're very flexible and have a relatively simple set up. Generally we would arrive 2 hours prior to the start of music, but we can work around any logistics.
No, but we can play back ground music during breaks or certain sections of the evening.
We find it simplest just to add all expense considerations into a final quote. We take into account the travel expenses and factor in more for that the farther away an engagement is from NYC.
