How much does a wedding photographer cost?

Wedding photographers early in their careers can cost as little as $1,500. Super experienced photographers, as seen in magazines like Vogue and Vanity Fair, can cost upwards of $30,000. The range is wide, but, in general, you can expect to spend around 10% of your budget on wedding photography. Rates also vary based on wedding length, the services you want, and location. A photographer based in an area with a lower cost of living, for example, will be less than one based in New York or San Francisco.

How much should we tip our wedding photographer?

A good rule of thumb is to tip 10% of their rate, or at least $100. If they’re bringing second photographers or assistants, an additional $50 to $75 per person is an appropriate and nice gesture.

What questions should we ask wedding photographers?

Aside from logistical questions about packages, pricing, and availability, it’s also important to use your conversation to get a sense of their personality. This person will be with you and your loved ones every step of your wedding day, including, if you want, in the dressing room! It’s very important that you and your partner both feel comfortable with them and their working style. Talk about your venue, how you want to feel when you look at your photos, and which photos from their portfolio you like best.

“I’m SO satisfied with our experience booking with George Street! I was drawn to them because I thought they were more reasonably priced compared to what some individual photographers are charging these days (we’re in the Seattle market), but I didn’t feel like the price advantage came at a sacrifice of quality. I loved the photos our photographer John C. took (who was AMAZING!) for both our engagement/portrait session and of course the photos on the day of the wedding. He did a fantastic job capturing all the beautiful memories we made that day, and we are so grateful. The booking process was really simple, too—I arranged a meeting with one of their sales reps (Amber) who did an excellent job explaining exactly how their company works, the packages available, how to choose your photographer and so on. Once we booked with them, we were given access to an online portal to put in all the necessary info that would be passed along to the photographer. One thing I would say is that because you are contracting with a company and not the individual photographer, you aren’t able to communicate directly with the photographer very often. You really are hiring them for photography only, so collaborating with them on the event timeline and other details is not really an option. Any questions you have generally need to be sent via the wedding coordinators at George Street, as you won’t even receive your photographer’s email or phone number until you actually meet them (it’s possible this is not the case for everyone, but just our experience). To be clear, this was NOT an issue for us at all, but just something to be aware of if a more hands-on photographer that can help with coordination and planning is really what you’re looking for.”

“The process of finding a wedding photographer and videographer, as any Bride knows, can be extremely stressful. We took quite a few meetings before we sat down with Hanel for our first video call. From the start, I stressed to him that as an interracial couple, it was extremely important to us that every single person, regardless of their skin color, be captured well in the photos and videos with lighting that worked for them. Hanel assured us that the team would be able to accomplish this and even sent us a gallery for reference, which ultimately helped us make our decision. When we received our photos, we were thrilled to see this goal was met and exceeded. Every photo, every person, every moment was beautifully and thoughtfully captured. We had the opportunity to do an engagement shoot with Mike before our wedding which was wonderful. We both felt a little uncomfortable in front of the camera, but Mike knew exactly what to say to capture those intimate moments. He made the experience feel natural when it was anything but! On our wedding day, we had the same fantastic experience. Mike and his team knew exactly what to do and they helped guide the way. They showed up and got right to work on detail shots and set up the room to look amazing for our getting ready shots. The photography assistant did the same for the men where they were getting ready. As a wedding singer myself, I have seen far too many photographers insert themselves into intimate ceremony moments. Mike and his team were extremely respectful at the Church, yet still able to capture the important moments! We got married on an extremely cold November day, right after daylight savings time so we didn’t have a ton of time between the ceremony and reception to capture daylight photos since we decided not to do a first look. Once again, Mike and the team worked efficiently to get all the appropriate photos and even got some stunning Fall foliage pictures. They were very good at scoping out the locations for beautiful backdrops which we see in all of our wedding gallery photos. They got amazing outside evening photos at Westbury Manor as well, even though it was so dark by the time we got there. When I was stressed towards the end of the night that we might not capture every planned moment (my husband and I sang an opera duet at the wedding reception on top of everything else!) they worked with the DJ to make sure everything flowed and all moments were captured and we did not feel rushed. Overall, the team was wonderful. They knew exactly what to do to make sure every moment was captured beautifully and everyone looked amazing! I cannot recommend Duet Photo and Video enough. We will cherish these memories for the rest of our lives!”

“Engagement and wedding photographers aren't usually something you need too many times in a lifetime. Sometimes you aren't sure where to begin or who to book, but you take your chances and hope for the best. That was me, pre meeting Justin Kunimoto. I found Justin through a google search. His website and portfolio were beautiful. His about me/philosophy page came through as warm and genuine, and I reached out to him via Instagram about an engagement shoot with the DC cherry blossoms. Justin responded quickly and professionally. Once we had a plan, he sent follow ups about construction and road closures near the tidal basin. He gave us suggestions on where to park and how long it would take to walk over. He arrived early that morning to do a walkthrough of the area. We had also arrived early, but he told us to stay in the car where it's warmer until it was closer to sunrise. Once we met up with him and were about to get started, I realized I never paid for parking. I tried paying for it on my phone, but naturally, it wasn't working. We didn't have our credit cards on us, so Justin offered to pay in order to save us a trip. I thought, "Whoa, this guy's really trusting. He's reaching for his wallet for us and we met him just five minutes ago." It turned out ParkMobile really was down, so my fiancé ended up running back to the car and paid at the meter. I apologized for the mix-up and he assured me it was okay. He said he's not in any rush and we have as long as we need. It made me feel at ease knowing he wasn't charging me for his time, but rather, the photoshoot/project as a whole. Justin did a great job planning and communicating ahead of the shoot. We felt loose and carefree the entire time. It was fun! Our photos turned out beautifully and for the ones that didn't, it was because of us as models and not his artistic composition. I could tell that he fixed up my stray hairs and removed some visible dress straps. He also brought us hand warmers to use. In so many ways, his thoughtfulness shined through and through. What a wonderful person, all around. It was a pleasure to meet him and to work with him.”
