How much does a wedding photographer cost?

Wedding photographers early in their careers can cost as little as $1,500. Super experienced photographers, as seen in magazines like Vogue and Vanity Fair, can cost upwards of $30,000. The range is wide, but, in general, you can expect to spend around 10% of your budget on wedding photography. Rates also vary based on wedding length, the services you want, and location. A photographer based in an area with a lower cost of living, for example, will be less than one based in New York or San Francisco.

How much should we tip our wedding photographer?

A good rule of thumb is to tip 10% of their rate, or at least $100. If they’re bringing second photographers or assistants, an additional $50 to $75 per person is an appropriate and nice gesture.

What questions should we ask wedding photographers?

Aside from logistical questions about packages, pricing, and availability, it’s also important to use your conversation to get a sense of their personality. This person will be with you and your loved ones every step of your wedding day, including, if you want, in the dressing room! It’s very important that you and your partner both feel comfortable with them and their working style. “11/10. Work with Duet. My wife and I got married in October 2025. We worked with Mike (lead photo), Paul (backup), and Hanel (point person / coordination). We also did an engagement shoot with Mike in NYC's Central Park in May '25. We also opted to have Duet run a photo booth at our wedding (recommend!). We were so lucky to work with Duet for a number of reasons: Communication - from the get-go, it was incredibly easy to work with Duet. Hanel is so on top of things and we were never waiting for an answer, in fact he was most often proactively reminding us of things and helping us think through things like day-of timing. If you haven't yet planned your wedding, responsiveness and trustworthiness in a vendor are huge pros. The photography itself - we consistently love the shots Duet has taken of us and our loved ones. I don't know much about photography, but we love the style, framing, and whatever finishing touches they use. Photos feel highly professional without crossing over into over-touched or too artsy. My wife and I were worried about where we would take photos on the day-of, to the point we were touring around near the venue and greater Brooklyn to find scenic spots. In the end, it rained for much of our wedding day, and we didn't have time to detour anyway - no problem, of course, because Mike and Paul made very ordinary backgrounds look wonderful with their photo magic, and were creative with shooting indoors and under umbrellas to make sure we still got a great first look and pre-wedding shots. Comfortability - we were really comfortable working with Mike. As mentioned, we did a post-engagement shoot in the park, more so to gain familiarity with Mike than for the pictures themselves (though they turned out great!). My wife and I are low key and I know I commonly feel uncomfortable having my photo taken. This was not an issue at all with Duet. Mike knew how to match our vibe and was never pushy - this was huge. Conservative approach - I don't fully understand the mechanics behind it, but my understanding is that Duet backs up every photo they take as it's taken so that there is an extra copy in case of emergency. They also do a lot of self-lighting for shots, which meant that while our venue of course mattered, and looked great anyway, they could have really made anything look nice with their lighting work. Pricing / value - while not the most important consideration, we felt Duet delivered a ton of value at a very reasonable price. Getting married in NYC is never going to be cheap, but we feel like we got the absolute best value for our money.”

“If you're looking for the photographer to capture all the love and joy you feel with your special person, I'm here to tell you, this is it. You found him. Does the idea of spending thousands of dollars for wedding photos scare you, because you can't see the photos right away, no refunds, no exchanges, no returns, and no do-overs, you are not alone. Do the scary thing. Invest your money on a photographer, but make sure you book Jason Rhee. I had a visual aesthetic in mind, but I also wasnt sure how to describe it. As a hobby photographer who mostly takes pictures of her dogs, or snaps pretty scenery and yummy food on vacation, I didnt know how to find to find somebody to capture our special day with the same romantic, yet slightly silly POV. I follow David Suh on IG, because he makes it look fun and easy to get photos you can proudly display, but we couldnt afford to fly him out for our wedding. We wanted somebody who gave similar energy. Instead, I spent hours on Google, Zola, Wedding Wire, the Knot, Reddit, Instagram, and reached out to Facebook groups like Subtle Asian Weddings and Ologies for inspiration. After weeks of pouring through lists of local photographers, reading price packages, scouring albums/portfolios/pages trying to find examples to describe the aesthetic I was looking for, and looking for photographers who evoke the same emotion, I found Jason Rhee. We set up a meeting, he passed the vibe check with flying colors. We had 6 months to plan our reception. We were on a budget. We needed somebody familiar with photographing not one, but three dogs at a wedding. We had an intimate (under 40ppl) wedding, with a LOT of camera-shy introverts (ourselves included!), and we wanted to get amazing pictures but have no experience posing in front of the camera. Where do we put our hands? What is our best angle? Is there enough light at the venue? Should I be serious, serene, or laughing? Don't worry, book Jason Rhee. Jason made the process of working together very easy and it felt like a true collaboration. He helped us plan within our budget. He was as invested as we were in creating our timeline, ensuring we had time for the photos we wanted, and understanding our wedding photography priorities. He provided prompts!!! He also coordinated with our videographer. Everything was clearly outlined in the contract. Our teaser album was done about two weeks after the reception (rest of the album should be done in another two weeks, which is amazing turnaround time considering the hundreds if not thousands of photos taken that day) I’ve always been self-conscious in front of a camera, but Jason was the best at boosting my confidence and posing us in a way that felt natural and look beautiful. We had many laughs along the way. Sadly, one of pups passed shortly before the big day, so we had to make it through one of the saddest months, alongside the chaos of planning our big day. Jason navigated it all with grace and went the extra mile to make sure we got all the photos we were hoping for. We got so many compliments (both during and after the wedding) from friends and family.”

“We booked Tomi Photopositive for our October 2024 wedding in Genesee Park, Colorado, and got exactly what all of his other perfect reviews rave about; Relentless compassion and positivity, regular and professional communication, timeliness in every regard, and of course an amazing collection of photos we get to cherish for the rest of our lives. We struggled to find an affordable photographer for our simple and small wedding. Some quotes came in exorbitantly high. One even wanted us to sign a contract before we could even schedule a virtual meet & greet to see if we'd all vibe. We found Tomi on Wedding wire, and we loved his portfolio (and his pricing almost seemed too good to be true based on his work), so we reached out. We set up a zoom call, and it was clear right away that Tomi loves what he does, and that he cares about his clients. This initial meeting was everything a nervous couple could hope for, it silenced much of the fear of booking someone we knew very little about. Though not included in the wedding photography package, we booked an engagement session with Tomi. I am so glad we did! It was worth every penny! Aside from great photos themselves, it gave us a good feel for how he works ahead of the wedding. Plus, it was fun, and we got some great shots! Tomi will go out of his way for his clients. One example is that he had never been to our venue (Chief Hosa Lodge - if you're looking for a wedding of 35-65 guests) before, so he went to the venue before the wedding to get a feel for all the best spots. He did this on his own time, and did not charge us extra for it. While we had originally hoped for a sunny day and sunset photos overlooking the mountains, we got snow and fog. Tomi seized the opportunity and turned the "disappointing" weather into one of the more memorable aspects of our day. For any couple who is considering not using a photographer, we strongly caution against it. we originally wanted to go that route or was looking for someone cheap (1000). However, finding Tomi was a blessing from God, and his pricing is more than worth it! His photos are eons better than anything you could hope for from an amateur photographer or cell phone grab. And seeing the final polished photos a couple months after the fact is like getting to experience your special day all over again. If you're still reading this, stop and book him. You will not be disappointed.”

When all of the bridal party was racing around with wet fingernails, Justin stepped in to help button the many buttons on my dress. When we were running late to get to the ceremony, Justin called the front desk at the venue to make sure our ride was waiting for us to get to the ceremony ASAP. I cannot recommend Justin enough!!!”
