How much does a wedding photographer cost?

Wedding photographers early in their careers can cost as little as $1,500. Super experienced photographers, as seen in magazines like Vogue and Vanity Fair, can cost upwards of $30,000. The range is wide, but, in general, you can expect to spend around 10% of your budget on wedding photography. Rates also vary based on wedding length, the services you want, and location. A photographer based in an area with a lower cost of living, for example, will be less than one based in New York or San Francisco.

How much should we tip our wedding photographer?

A good rule of thumb is to tip 10% of their rate, or at least $100. If they’re bringing second photographers or assistants, an additional $50 to $75 per person is an appropriate and nice gesture.

What questions should we ask wedding photographers?

Aside from logistical questions about packages, pricing, and availability, it’s also important to use your conversation to get a sense of their personality. This person will be with you and your loved ones every step of your wedding day, including, if you want, in the dressing room! It’s very important that you and your partner both feel comfortable with them and their working style. Talk about your venue, how you want to feel when you look at your photos, and which photos from their portfolio you like best.

We had chosen a rather unique venue for our engagement session (one without the best lighting to be fair) and he took such care in crafting each shot so that we both looked our best, but also popped against the background. You could tell while he was taking every photo that it was not about getting the next shot and moving on, but that he cared about getting the right shot for you. That kind of care extends to the rest of their team as well. Nora and Emily were incredibly communicative throughout the entire process. They responded to almost every email within 48 hours of sending and anytime we had a question about anything, no matter how small, they were more than happy to walk us through it either via email or by hopping on the phone. Their user portal for creating a wedding plan is also very user-friendly and was helpful in determining important moments to capture during the night as well as the best way to structure our wedding in terms of timeline. In terms of the actual wedding day, we had Mario as an associate photographer and Randy as our videographer in addition to Jeremy. Once again, all three made us feel like we were absolute stars. For Randy in particular, he was seemingly everywhere at once. If there was something happening on the dance floor or a moment of revelry happened anywhere, he somehow captured it. The process of receiving the photos & videos afterward was also much quicker than anticipated and they were stunning. We had such a hard time choosing what photos would go into the album. Overall, this was an incredible team to work with and if we were to do it all again, they would be our first choice.”

“If you're looking for the photographer to capture all the love and joy you feel with your special person, I'm here to tell you, this is it. You found him. Does the idea of spending thousands of dollars for wedding photos scare you, because you can't see the photos right away, no refunds, no exchanges, no returns, and no do-overs, you are not alone. Do the scary thing. Invest your money on a photographer, but make sure you book Jason Rhee. I had a visual aesthetic in mind, but I also wasnt sure how to describe it. As a hobby photographer who mostly takes pictures of her dogs, or snaps pretty scenery and yummy food on vacation, I didnt know how to find to find somebody to capture our special day with the same romantic, yet slightly silly POV. I follow David Suh on IG, because he makes it look fun and easy to get photos you can proudly display, but we couldnt afford to fly him out for our wedding. We wanted somebody who gave similar energy. Instead, I spent hours on Google, Zola, Wedding Wire, the Knot, Reddit, Instagram, and reached out to Facebook groups like Subtle Asian Weddings and Ologies for inspiration. After weeks of pouring through lists of local photographers, reading price packages, scouring albums/portfolios/pages trying to find examples to describe the aesthetic I was looking for, and looking for photographers who evoke the same emotion, I found Jason Rhee. We set up a meeting, he passed the vibe check with flying colors. We had 6 months to plan our reception. We were on a budget. We needed somebody familiar with photographing not one, but three dogs at a wedding. We had an intimate (under 40ppl) wedding, with a LOT of camera-shy introverts (ourselves included!), and we wanted to get amazing pictures but have no experience posing in front of the camera. Where do we put our hands? What is our best angle? Is there enough light at the venue? Should I be serious, serene, or laughing? Don't worry, book Jason Rhee. Jason made the process of working together very easy and it felt like a true collaboration. He helped us plan within our budget. He was as invested as we were in creating our timeline, ensuring we had time for the photos we wanted, and understanding our wedding photography priorities. He provided prompts!!! He also coordinated with our videographer. Everything was clearly outlined in the contract. Our teaser album was done about two weeks after the reception (rest of the album should be done in another two weeks, which is amazing turnaround time considering the hundreds if not thousands of photos taken that day) I’ve always been self-conscious in front of a camera, but Jason was the best at boosting my confidence and posing us in a way that felt natural and look beautiful. We had many laughs along the way. Sadly, one of pups passed shortly before the big day, so we had to make it through one of the saddest months, alongside the chaos of planning our big day. Jason navigated it all with grace and went the extra mile to make sure we got all the photos we were hoping for. We got so many compliments (both during and after the wedding) from friends and family.”

We had an engagement photo shoot with him first, and had some rescheduling due to weather. He was so helpful keeping a close eye on the weather and communicating with us to make sure we were all on the same page (because we had a bit of a drive to the location). Day of the shoot, me and my fiancé made the call to keep on schedule, even though it was pretty windy. Little did we know that we would endure insane winds up on the mountain view we picked. Our pictures are just stunning, and we have SO many of them. We just loved the creativity, catching the perfect moments, and candid nature of our pictures. Even our guests were having a blast with him, and we’ve had many tell us how cool our photographer was. It was amazing to see our guests connect with him in this way, and I think it made for more awesome snaps as well. “Emma was awesome to work with. Communicating with her from the beginning of the process was super clear, prompt, and professional. She was easy to talk to and has a casual style that I appreciate, while still guiding us through the process and making sure we were on track with scheduling, deciding on details for the day, etc. Of all of our vendors, she was by far the most organized. The quality of her work is simply gorgeous and she managed to make us look much cooler than we really are! She captured all the candid moments we had hoped for, and we were amazed at how quickly she got through our posed photos so we could just enjoy the rest of our wedding day. My dad even commented, "Wow, I don't know when you guys had time to get all of these!" after seeing the gallery. We also had a laundry list of family/wedding party pairings and we got through them all promptly after the ceremony, without a ton of fuss, which is exactly as we'd requested. She pulled us aside after dinner when the sun was at the perfect height to get a few more photos, and they're some of my favorites despite only taking us away from the party for about 5 minutes. The preview gallery came SO fast (I believe it was within a day or two) and the pics were just amazing. She was so accommodating of anything we wanted to do, and also had suggestions whenever we weren't sure what we wanted. I also requested to get a couple photos before our final gallery was done so that my mom could use them for Christmas cards and she was so accommodating of that request and sent them right away. We had a great experience and are so happy with our final gallery. Thanks, Emma!!”

“Scarlet Oak Studio could not have been better to work with. They came recommended by our venue (Log Haven) and almost seemed too good to be true. Our photography and videography package was the same cost as just photography elsewhere and included multiple shooters and lighting. Linsey was our lead shooter and I truly can’t say enough good things about her and the rest of the team! Linsey is so full of joy and kept things fun and light but also on track. She called us prior to the wedding day so we could walk through all of our shots and make a detailed schedule. We had some concerns on timing and Linsey worked out a “fake send off” to capture the photos without stopping the party or having to add another hour to our package. Pictures can be tough for both me and my now husband so I was worried the photos would feel uncomfortable on the actual day but that could not have been further from the truth! The entire team was so kind and thoughtful, they captured every moment without feeling intrusive. They gave helpful direction without making things feel too posed or staged and gave us space during a private vows reading while still capturing the love in that moment. I wanted photos that felt true to the spirit of the day and I definitely think the joy radiates through each picture. I have had multiple friends message me specifically about how great the photos turned out - and I know you might be thinking everyone says that to the bride, but I’m talking about photos taken of my friends that they’re loving! So if Scarlet Oak Studio seems to be too good to be true don’t question it, just book it! :)”
