How much does hair and makeup cost for a wedding?

According to Thumbtack, wedding makeup artists cost $90–$475 per person on average in 2022. Here at Zola, we recommend putting aside around $300 for your own wedding hair and makeup. Services for wedding party members are generally less expensive, as the artist or stylist will spend less time perfecting the look. Be sure to have a transparent conversation with your wedding party if you expect them to cover their own costs.

How long does wedding hair and makeup take to do?

The more involved the look, the more time it will take. In general, allocate 60–90 minutes for your own looks and 30–45 minutes for each member of the wedding party. Extensions, extra thick hair, and intricate makeup all take longer. Communicating who (with pictures and descriptions) is getting what (again, with photos) to your stylists will help them plan an accurate timeline.

Who usually pays for hair and makeup for the wedding party?

Traditionally, whoever is asking for the services should pay. However, this may not be in the budget for every couple. If you’re planning on having your wedding party pay, be transparent when you first ask them to be in the wedding party itself. Then, they can choose whether it’s possible for them to participate.

“Omg - from trial to wedding day, Cheryl was amazing! She listened to everything I had in mind for my full look, took into consideration my skin and hair types, then worked her magic. I was blown away by the results, and even the fact that my curls and makeup stayed on all night long afterwards (my hair never holds a curl when I do it myself and I rarely wear makeup so my skin wasn’t use to it). After that, Cheryl had great communication leading up to my wedding day, providing a schedule, sending over prep directions to share with everyone, and even letting me know she picked up a new product she couldn’t wait to try on my skin. On my wedding day, Cheryl and Selina worked so hard to achieve all of the bridesmaids looks and recreate my look even BETTER than it did at the trial, if that was even possible! “I have worked with Sophia for three weddings. As a bride and as a bridesmaid, Sophia made me look and feel like my best self. Sophia was a dream to work with during the planning process of my wedding. She was extremely organized and helped me to make sure that my day-of timeline was efficient. At my makeup trial, Sophia took her time and made sure I was happy with every detail of my makeup, pausing and checking in throughout the process. On the morning of my wedding, Sophia was prepared and punctual. Her calm presence in the busy room helped me to feel at ease and relaxed. As she did my makeup, we sang throwback songs together and laughed. When Sophia worked on family members that were less comfortable with certain parts of the makeup process, Sophia made them feel comfortable and safe with her. She assured everyone that they could try things, and if they didn’t like them they could change up the plan. She made both my mom and mother-in-law feel comfortable and confident trying false eyelashes for the first time. Sophia helped everyone feel beautiful and happy! Over the course of the year as we progressed through the three weddings, I got to know Sophia on a personal level. We learned about each other's families and interests and she became more than a makeup artist, but a friend. I can’t recommend Sophia enough!!”
