Inside Zola

Ah, middle school, those awkward years where kids start to go through puberty and giggle around those that catch their eye. Many of them would pretend to be engaged to their would-be beau as they flash a massive rock on their finger—a Ring Pop, to be exact. Yes, those sweet rings are colorful and yummy, but as an adult, your jewelry should get a significant upgrade, which often leads to questions on how to finance an [engagement ring](https://zola.app.link/0oixcrRMLab).

If you want to “pop” the question, it’s wise to consider a less tasty, longer-lasting, and more valuable option. When it comes to paying for that big jewelry purchase, cash is ideal. But, if the candy type is [all you can afford](https://zola.app.link/YQMa4iBWLab), exploring engagement ring financing could be the answer.

## Things to Consider With Engagement Ring Financing
As with any major purchase, such as a house or car, couples need to think about how they will foot [the bill](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/how-to-finance-an-engagement-ring). Money isn’t the most romantic topic, but couples should chat about the expenditure before the allure of a massive, sparkly diamond—and a smart salesperson at your local jewelry store—overtakes their senses. The cost of an engagement ring isn’t something to be glossed over. Instead, sit down with your partner and have a realistic conversation regarding the following.

## Determine How Much to Spend
You probably want to land somewhere between Ring Pop and Kim K’s multi-million dollar stunner (which unfortunately was stolen, but [that’s another story](https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/kim-kardashian-engagement-ring-stolen-paris-replica-kanye-west-robbery-kkw-beauty-a9212396.html)). All comparisons aside, designating a specific price range for your bling will keep you from overextending [your budget](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/how-to-finance-an-engagement-ring).

There are ways to get what you crave, such as sacrificing diamond clarity or color in exchange for a higher carat weight. Do a bit of research on what you can afford and what tweaks you are willing to make.

## Think Creatively
If you’ve been searching online, chances are you’ve found a [few head-turners](https://zola.app.link/TNdKkgU2Jab) that may be out of your price range. There are ways to get close to what you want without having to break the bank. Pre-loved, lesser priced rings abound in pawn shops, antique stores, and the estate sections of jewelry boutiques.

Think creatively about where to secure your wedding ring. Doing so means that you may get more for your money or end up paying less.

## Insure Your Wedding Rings
Sure, Kim can afford to repurchase an expensive diamond ring, but it would be a hardship for most of us. Even if it weren’t a burden financially, it would be discouraging to have to spring for a new ring. Insurance won’t replace the emotional toll of a sentimental piece being lost or stolen. But, if you [insure your ring](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/reasons-to-insure-engagement-ring), you can file a claim and replace it quickly.

Most homeowners and renters [policies](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/specialty-jewelry-insurance-vs-protection-plans) include the jewelry inside your dwelling, but often it only [compensates up to a specific value](https://www.investopedia.com/articles/personal-finance/062615/it-worth-it-insure-my-wedding-ring.asp#:~:text=The%20general%20rule%20for%20insuring,bit%20more%20for%20your%20coverage.). Having an additional plan is reassurance that you can be reimbursed for the full replacement cost.

## How to Finance an Engagement Ring
Let’s face it, weddings are expensive—flowers, attire, venue, food. The list goes on, but the [budget may not](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/how-to-set-your-wedding-budget). Although an engagement ring will last well beyond the big day, going [deep into debt](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/should-we-go-into-debt-for-our-wedding) right out of the gate may not be wise or necessary.

## 1. Use a Credit Card to Finance an Engagement Ring
Before you grab the plastic already tucked into your wallet, think about getting a brand new card. Many credit card companies offer low introductory rates—or zero-APR—and give bonus points for large purchases within the first few months.

However, be aware of when these rates expire before swiping your card. If your current one already has a low rate or you’re saving reward points, weigh the benefits of your existing account before seeking a new one.

## 2. See if Your Jeweler Offers Engagement Ring Financing
Frequently, large jewelry chain stores offer to finance and/or they have their own credit cards. However, be sure to read the fine print before charging those engagement rings. Buy-now-pay-later plans are alluring, yet there may be harsh penalties for missing or delaying payment.

Jewelry stores with easy credit approval often have zero percent interest. Be sure to ask questions about when the rate will go up after the introductory offer. This increase is often described as deferred interest and can accompany no credit check, engagement ring financing. No matter the verbiage, be sure to review the specifications before signing on the dotted line.

## 3. Take Out a Personal Loan
Hearing “loan” sounds scary. Honestly, with our ever-present credit cards, we don’t often take out loans unless we’re financing a big purchase, such as a car or business start-up.

Fear aside, analyze securing a bank loan for engagement ring financing. With a personal loan, you’ll be able to make a monthly payment on your chosen wedding ring. Bad credit history may hurt your chances or increase your percentage rate, but having a good relationship with a local bank can prove beneficial.

## 4. Think About Earning Extra Income
Still looking for jewelry financing options for your wedding ring? Although this is a bit unconventional, decluttering is a fabulous way to earn extra money. Purging can be quite the motivator, especially if you’re combining households. With selling outlets such as Facebook Marketplace, eBay, and Craigslist, couples can earn cash quickly.

Other alternatives are to hold a yard sale or take unwanted items to a pawn shop. You may be surprised about the items lying around your home that could help finance a ring long term. Another alternative is getting a part-time job or stepping up your side hustle to [cover the cost](https://zola.app.link/bxLaAGyN71).

That said, remember: The “three months’ salary” rule isn’t real wedding etiquette. The amount of money you end up spending on an engagement ring is entirely up to you and differs greatly from couple to couple.

## Benefits and Drawbacks of Engagement Ring Financing

Desc

- __Pro: Credit card points.__ Most couples who choose to finance an engagement ring do so via credit card. Depending on your credit card—whether it’s a travel card, store credit card, or bank card—this could end up earning you a lot of points and/or benefits. In the case of travel points, it might even help contribute to honeymoon costs.

- __Con: Interest rates.__ That said, charging an expensive engagement ring to your credit card can make it seem as though the spending doesn’t exist. If you can’t see it—outside of your bank statement—you may forget about it and be slow to pay it off. Out of sight, out of mind. This is where interest rates will get you. The longer you wait to achieve repayment, the more you’ll end up paying in interest charges—especially where high interest rates are concerned. This is why looking for lenders/borrowers with low interest can be paramount.

- __Pro: Convenience.__ The most common reason for financing an engagement ring is time convenience. In short, you might not have all of the money you need right now, but still want to purchase the ring. Perhaps you’re going on a special trip soon or a holiday is coming up where you’d like to propose. In any case, financing allows you to purchase an engagement ring on a timeline that works for you. This may also allow you to take advantage of store sales, promotional periods, and in-store financing deals via retailers.

- __Con: Credit score.__ Putting such a large charge on a credit card or taking out a personal loan can have a negative effect on otherwise good credit. Poor credit, in turn, has the potential to drastically affect your personal finances, including other wedding costs. If you charged the ring to a credit card, avoid this by paying more than the minimum amount each month. If you went through an issuer, stick to your payment plan and pay more when you can.

## Conclusion
An engagement ring purchase is nothing short of a big deal. From loan amounts, to financing offers, to personal loans, this might not be a conversation or situation you look forward to working through. However, if you take the time to really research and weigh your options, you’re more likely to come out the other side in good financial shape. No matter how you choose to finance an engagement ring, be sure to head into the purchase with a bit of knowledge in hand about your options. Looking at diamond engagement rings is a time to level up, ditch the middle school Ring Pop, and propose with a stunner meant to last as long as your love.

And for those times when your wedding budget seems to be getting the better of you, take advantage of Zola’s in-app budget calculator feature. Simply open the app, tap budget, and update with your wedding budget and spending.

How to Finance an Engagement Ring

Whoever came up with “first comes love, then comes marriage” missed a few steps along the way. Between those initial butterflies and a lifetime together are a lot of things, especially expensive things, one of which being the engagement ring. For most couples, finding a proposal-worthy piece tops the list, and there are __[affordable wedding rings](https://www.zola.com/shop/category/wedding-rings?sort=PRICE_ASCENDING)__ out there. With a bit of knowledge and creative thinking, you should be able to get your wedding jewelry for a song. Consider some of the below factors when planning to buy rings and also a few cheaper options for rings further down before you commit to buying what is possibly the most important jewelry commitment you’ll be making at that time.

### How to Find an Affordable Wedding Ring?

## 1. Save Up for a Sale

Bargain hunters unite! With a bit of planning, you can scope out jewelry stores for the timing of their annual clearance sales. Often, __[wedding rings](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/a-guide-to-wedding-rings)__ are overstocked or have been there a while. You may get a stunner wedding band or ring for a steal. Another option is to limit yourself to searching the store’s markdown section to find a quality diamond ring at a bargain price. You will probably find a good sale as one wedding season closes and turns to the next and some styles become less fashionable. You might also find a good sale during the holidays and can benefit from that steal, holding on to the ring until the actual big day.

## 2. Look for Used Jewelry
Local, reputable pawn shops often have a plethora of discarded engagement rings. Make someone else’s loss your gain and scour cases for the perfect fit. Another option when shopping for an affordable engagement ring is to head to the estate section of your local jewelry store. There are often one-of-a-kind and vintage rings that you can get for a fraction of the cost of a new piece. Hunt for a cushion cut, marquise, or 925 sterling silver options too.

You can also find an affordable wedding ring at antique shops and via seller sites, such as Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace, but be wary. Ensure that the seller has the receipt or paperwork for the ring to ensure that you’re getting what you pay for. Also, see if your family has any remaining pieces in their jewelry stash. Using an heirloom can make proposing that much more special. You can also make a custom piece if you feel the heirloom design is outdated – just make sure you give the jewelry designer enough material to work with and a reference image for the look and feel you are going for as well as the right ring circumference for comfort fit.

## 3. Consider Custom Engagement Rings

Nowadays, the word “custom” can come with a hefty price tag. However, that may not always be the case when hiring a jewelry designer. An artist can work __[within your price range](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/how-to-finance-an-engagement-ring)__ and offer a variety of options to fit within your budget and __[engagement ring style](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/a-guide-to-wedding-rings)__. Plus, it’s a huge bonus to be able to get an affordable, one-of-a-kind piece.

Suppose you have an heirloom diamond, or a discarded ring made of precious metal, that’s even better! Alloys can be melted, and gemstones added to create custom engagement rings. Using what you already have can reduce the cost and help you create the perfect ring.

## 4. Switch to Alternative Metals
Diamonds are valuable and are best set in metal that’s worthy of them. However, if you have your heart set on an expensive metal, such as platinum, you may want to opt for a different type. Alloys such as tungsten, __[steel](https://www.zola.com/shop/product/lashbrook_damascus_steel_wedding_band)__, and titanium will lighten the cost of your ring. A big bonus is that some of the lesser-priced alternative metals are incredibly durable. So, what you lack in value, you gain in longevity.

## 5. Tweak Your Gemstone

A simple swap is to forgo the diamond and go with a look alike. Cubic zirconia has come a long way, and only the two of you will know it’s a dupe. Just be upfront with your fiance, as some have been caught trying to pass off a fake. Yikes! You could go with a different gem altogether, use a birthstone, or opt for a colored rock, such as sapphire or emerald.

If you must have a diamond ring, then there are ways to sacrifice in some areas to gain in others. For example, if the size is essential, look at stones that are lesser in quality. Lower-rated diamonds may have slight inclusions or a bit of a yellowish cast. If the diamond’s grade is crucial, then choose a slightly lower __[diamond carat size](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/the-ultimate-diamond-carat-size-guide)__ to put quality over quantity. Another option is to go for less expensive, __[lab-grown diamond](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/the-ultimate-diamond-carat-size-guide)__ engagement rings.

## 6. Rethink a Solitaire

Often, solitaire engagement rings are costly. There is also a significant difference between a one-carat diamond and a ring with a total diamond weight of one carat. Choosing a piece with several smaller stones, instead of one large rock can make your bling more affordable.

If your heart is set on a solitaire, go a bit under the weight you want. A .96 carat diamond is often less expensive than a one-carat ring. Even though the difference is only .04 carats, there are weight increments in the jewelry industry that serve as price markers.

## 7. Talk to Your Salesperson

A salesperson can often be your ally in choosing a bridal ring, engagement ring set, or diamond wedding bands, and the smaller the chain store, the better. If you head to a pawn shop or local jewelry boutique, sometimes you can ask for a percentage off the price. You may score a better deal, especially if you’re talking to the owner. Politely asking if they could extend a discount can go a long way.

When dealing with a large chain, pick your clerk’s brain about __[affordable wedding rings](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/how-to-finance-an-engagement-ring)__. Ask them if any specials are coming up or if any rings may be marked down soon. It’s a win for everyone, as you help them clear out their stock.

## 8. Look Online for Affordable Rings

Many couples enjoy shopping online so that they can compare prices and styles without being put on the spot. The added pressure of a salesperson can clutter the mind. Of course, the caveat with [purchasing online](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/how-to-finance-an-engagement-ring) is that you aren’t seeing the rings in person. Each natural diamond will vary in color and imperfections, so be aware of industry standards. Also, do your homework about the return policy, warranty, and payment options that a site offers.

## 9. Purchase Your Engagement and Wedding Ring Set at the Same Time

A car salesperson would probably faint if you told them you wanted to buy three cars at once, but don’t expect the same reaction from your jeweler. There may be added benefits to [purchasing three-piece wedding ring sets](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/pair-wedding-band-with-engagement-ring), as buying pieces for both partners at once can help obtain a discount. __[Some bands](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/pair-wedding-band-with-engagement-ring)__ are explicitly sold as an engagement and wedding ring set, which is often more economical.

## 10. Weigh Your Financing Options

“Cash is king” reigns true. Many stores offer a discount for using banknotes, and you will avoid interest and fees by doing so. Although, if you need to [finance your wedding ring](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/how-much-to-spend-on-a-wedding-ring), be aware of your options. Don’t just pop out a high-interest credit card and hope for the best.

Jewelry shops often offer to finance, but another option is to get a new credit card with a low introductory rate or zero-APR. Although neither of these will make your engagement ring more affordable, it will reduce your total cost.

## 11. Buy Now, Upgrade Later

If you met the perfect person while going through grad school, opt for a modest or __[simple wedding ring](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/a-guide-to-wedding-rings)__ now or even promise rings or eternity band, and then upgrade later to some fine jewelry. Chances are that you’ll be able to splurge once you are making money, instead of while you’re __[racking up student loans](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/to-dos-after-you-get-engaged)__.

Checkout a placeholder gold ring, gold wedding band, or sterling silver rings to wear on a different finger eventually. It could also be passed down to future generations as a keepsake after it’s replaced. Another option is to sell the original ring, if it’s not sentimental, to help you afford another piece down the road.

No matter your stage in life, affordable wedding rings are within reach. Getting more for your money not only feels good, but it can make the time between love and marriage a bit easier on your pocketbook.

### Top 5 Affordable Wedding Ring Options

Understandably, not everyone has a grand budget to work with when it comes to rings so we’ve listed a few styles here that can broadly address that issue. Consider these options first before jumping for a ring that might be too expensive to afford at this time. There is always the opportunity to upgrade, exchange, or resell at a later day for a new ring. Check with your jewelry maker as well so you know what future options are available to you via the same store.

### 1. Vintage rings

Since vintage rings are used and don’t carry the same markup as newer jewelry does, this is one of the cheap wedding rings options to consider when budgeting for jewelry costs. That said, you can possibly find plenty of designs that align with the look and feel you are going for toward your big day. These will possibly cost you much lesser than a brand new designed or custom piece and you could come away from shopping for a ring benefitting from a pretty good deal.

### 2. Cluster rings

As cluster rings don’t have one large centerpiece diamond or gemstone but rather several stones that are smaller and less expensive, this is also a reason why they are among favored cheap wedding ring options. Wearing ring clusters is quite fashionable and could give the illusion of one broad and fancy ring or clearly denote a set of rings worn individually. Depending on your style, you can choose a few different types of gold bands as well.

### 3. Solitaires

These are classic, elegant, and budget-friendly choices. As there are no diamonds or gemstones taking pride of place in a solitaire band, this is a great cheap wedding ring option as well for those on a very rigid budget and not much leeway to spend on rings. Consider this a first stop when looking for rings before exploring other options. They never go out of style and can be a versatile piece that is worn with other outfits as well.

### 4. Gemstone rings

If you are not very specific about going for the expensive mainstream gemstones that are always in demand and therefore sold at a premium price, you can still have a beautiful gemstone dotted ring at a much lesser price point. Research ahead to see which types and colors would best suit not just your outfit but also your skin tone and can be worn for long periods of time. That way you’ll have a few options in mind when you go shopping.

### 5. Smaller accents

Instead of one large attention-seeking diamond, consider several smaller diamond accents for a cheaper ring overall. This will also give you some leeway to play with the type of gold used – choose from rose gold, white gold, and yellow gold or even opt for a sterling silver bridal set. A princess cut might also be a good option to consider when on budget as the irregular shape makes them look larger to the naked eye than a regular round shape which is the most common and favored but also quite expensive.

While this compilation is in no way exhaustive, it does provide a broad summary of the ring options you can consider for wedding rings if you are working on a lean budget. You may want to begin shopping around for designs ahead of time so you can truly review all the choices you have before finalizing on that one special ring.

A Guide to Wedding Rings

Where You Can (and Can't) Wear Your Engagement Ring

As you investigate the various ways to protect your engagement ring, wedding ring, or other jewelry, you may be questioning your options. Whether through your jeweler, friend, family member, or your own online research, you likely came up with a couple of considerations: a __protection plan__ and __jewelry insurance.__

__Spoiler alert: They are not the same.__

You want to wear your jewelry without worry, knowing you’re covered if something happens. Both a protection plan and jewelry insurance are great to have, but it’s important to understand how the coverages differ.

Let’s go over some of the things that set protection plans apart from specialty jewelry insurance so you can make a confident decision about how best to protect your special pieces.

## What does a typical protection plan cover?
- Protection plans may be purchased from your jeweler at the same time as the jewelry purchase and typically covers your jewelry from damage caused by normal wear. This may include damage like a worn prong or a thinning band.
- You may be able to purchase a protection plan for various time periods, such as 1-year, 3-years, 5-years, or even lifetime. When your plan expires and you want further coverage, you would need to purchase a new plan.
- Protection plans typically do not include loss or theft.

## What does jewelry insurance cover?
- A stand-alone policy from a [specialty jewelry insurer like the Jewelers Mutual Group ](http://www.jewelersmutual.com/protectzola "Jewelers Mutual")may be mentioned by your jeweler as an option to consider but is the coverage you would purchase directly through the insurer, not with your jeweler.
- Specialized jewelry insurance includes more comprehensive coverage to protect your jewelry from perils such as loss, theft, damage, and mysterious disappearance.
- Accidents like cracking your stone on the edge of a table, [leaving your ring on a beach towel](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/where-you-can-and-cant-wear-your-engagement-ring), or just not having a clue where you left your necklace would all be covered with jewelry insurance.
- Jewelry insurance policies typically are 12-month renewable policies with the premium paid annually.

## Couldn't I purchase both?
Jewelry owners may purchase both a protection plan for routine maintenance along with a jewelry insurance policy for comprehensive coverage that extends beyond the protection plan coverage for maximum protection.

Remember to check with your jeweler for any complimentary services they may provide to keep your ring and other jewelry sparkling like new. Whether you have a protection plan, insurance or both, it’s recommended you visit your jeweler at least twice a year for a professional cleaning and inspection. Your jeweler will be able to examine your ring with an expert eye to ensure it’s in good condition.

When it comes to shapes and styles, not all diamonds are created equal—and not all diamonds work equally well with every finger. ## What To Consider Before Choosing A Diamond Ring
First things first—before we jump into the best diamond shapes and style for each finger type, let’s quickly go over some of the most important factors that go into choosing the right diamond ring for you.

Some of the main criteria you’re going to want to consider when choosing the perfect diamond shape and style for your engagement ring include:

### The Width and Length of Your Finger
When choosing a diamond shape and style, you want to create a sense of balance and proportion on your finger—so the length, width, and overall size of your finger is going to dictate which diamonds are going to look balanced and proportionate.

### The Size of the Stone
The size of a diamond is also going to play into how flattering a certain shape or style is going to look on your finger. As a rule of thumb, the larger the stone, the more noticeable any issues with balance, proportion, or unflattering shapes will be.

### Your Personal Style
It doesn’t matter if a diamond shape or style “works” on your finger shape—if it doesn’t match your [personal style](https://zola.app.link/XXGCpJyN71), it’s not going to make you happy in the long run. Make sure you choose a diamond shape and style that feels like a reflection of your own personal taste—and that you’ll be happy rocking on your finger from now until forever.

### Band Width
Not only do the stones on your ring have a high impact, but the band. While material—silver, gold, white gold, rose gold, etc.—is important to consider, even more important is the width of the band. For example, if you have thinner fingers, a thicker band might overwhelm them. At the same time, if you prefer a ring with a lot of stones, a thin band might not be able to accommodate that. Also consider the style of wedding band you’d like to go with your engagement ring and how the widths of each band might look together.

### Accent Gemstones
Perhaps you’d like more than a singular diamond. Whether that means a ring design with a couple accent stones around the center stone or a band covered in pavé diamonds is up to your preference. Accent gemstones, too, can add a variety of shapes, styles, and uniqueness to a diamond ring. If that sounds like what you’re looking for, consider those that add color to a ring that’s diamond color is more classic. Also try those that add to the overall ring style.

### Budget
We couldn’t talk about important deciding factors without discussing budget. While this isn’t the most exciting aspect of ring shopping, it’s paramount to think over before setting your heart on something. Set a realistic budget range for yourself and be transparent about it with any jewelers and/or sellers. If a proposal isn’t a total surprise, consider having an open conversation about budget and expectations with your partner.

## Best Diamond Shape For Each Finger Type
As we said, different diamonds look different on different fingers and hands. Here’s how to figure out what diamond will best suit your finger.

### A Universally Flattering Diamond That Looks Good On Every Finger
A round brilliant is one of the most classic diamond shapes on the market. And it’s a classic for a reason. This diamond holds a lot of its weight at the top, which takes up a lot of real estate on your ring finger. Plus, because of the round diamond shape, you get a balanced look that will work on a variety of finger shapes and [sizes](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/wedding-ring-size-guide).

While there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to choosing the right diamond shape/style, if you want a diamond that’s going to be [universally flattering](https://zola.app.link/vi2RlmyN71), the round brilliant is a solid choice.

### For Long And Thin Fingers
If you have long, thin fingers, you’re going to want to choose a diamond shape that compliments your finger length. So, elongated diamonds are a fantastic choice.

Luckily, there are a ton of different styles out there to choose from. A naturally elongated diamond shape, like an oval, pear, or marquise cut, will look gorgeous on your finger, as will an elongated radiant or an emerald cut. Just remember, if you have long fingers, you want your diamond to have a more elongated appearance to match. Moreover, solitaire rings (those with a single diamond on a band) can also look beautiful, as they won’t overwhelm your finger.

__What to Avoid:__ Anything too square-shaped or princess cut. More square-shaped diamonds like a standard (not elongated) emerald or radiant cut aren’t always the most flattering on long, thin fingers. The shape can actually make your fingers look longer (and your ring can look disproportionate on your finger).

### For Stout Fingers
If your fingers are on the thicker side, going with a more delicate diamond shape or style can actually make them look wider. Instead, look for a stone that’s going to really make a statement and take up a lot of real estate on your finger—like an oval or pear-shaped diamond.

__What to Avoid:__ Narrow diamonds. You want a stone that’s going to fill out the width of your finger. If you have your heart set on a [narrower cut](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/what-are-the-different-diamond-cut-options), you can add side stones to create width and add a sense of balance.

### For Small Fingers
If you have small hands, you have a serious benefit when shopping for engagement rings; everything is going to look bigger on your small fingers.

On the flip side, going with a diamond shape or style that’s overly big or bold can have the opposite effect, looking too over-the-top on your tiny finger. If your hands are noticeably small, make sure to stick to a more delicate style (such as a round cut, oval cut, or pear cut) that looks proportionate on your finger. On the other hand, opposing styles—such as elongated radiant cuts and emerald cuts—can look too harsh or overwhelming.

__What to Avoid:__ Huge diamonds. As mentioned, any diamond you put on a small finger is going to look larger than it would on a bigger finger. So, oversized diamonds can look almost cartoonishly disproportionate on someone with extremely small hands.

## Choosing The Perfect Diamond Carat Size
For those who don’t know, a carat is a unit of measurement in regards to a diamond’s (or gemstone’s) physical weight. Note that carat weight is just that—a stone’s weight, not the size of the diamond. Jewelers, gemologists, and similar ring and stone sellers will use diamond carat size in the description of diamond engagement rings in order to describe how heavy one’s cut diamond is. This weight will be the same across natural diamonds and lab grown diamonds, as their physical and chemical makeup is the same.

For reference, a half carat diamond weighs .1 grams, a 1 carat diamond weights .2 grams, a 2 carat diamond weights .4 grams, and so on and so forth. Pro tip: Diamond rings that don’t have a neat carat weight (such as a half carat, one carat, two carat, etc.) can sometimes cost less than those that do, despite being unnoticeable to the naked eye. When discussing stones, ring sizes, and the like with a jeweler, feel free to ask about carat sizes and to see those of similar weights.

These are some suggestions on which diamond cuts, shapes, and styles tend to work best with different finger types. Take the above information into consideration when figuring out how to choose a diamond shape, size, and style for your [engagement ring](https://zola.app.link/6iNeuzyN71).

Remember, though, these are just suggestions. You’re the one (or your partner’s the one) who’s going to be wearing your ring every day, so ultimately, it’s up to you to get out there and find the diamond that feels perfect for you.

### If you have long, thin fingers, try an elongated diamond.
If you have long, thin fingers, you’re going to want to choose a diamond shape that compliments your finger length. So, elongated diamonds are a fantastic choice.

Luckily, there are a ton of different styles out there to choose from. A naturally elongated diamond shape, like an oval or pear cut, will look gorgeous on your finger, as will an elongated radiant or an emerald cut. Just remember, if you have long fingers, you want your diamond to have a more elongated appearance to match.

__What to Avoid:__ Anything too square-shaped. More square-shaped diamonds like a standard (not elongated) emerald or radiant cut aren’t always the most flattering on long, thin fingers. The shape can actually make your fingers look longer (and your ring can look disproportionate on your finger).

### If you have stout fingers, try an oval or pear shape.

If you have your heart set on a narrower cut, you can add side stones to create width and add a sense of balance.

The Best Diamond Shape & Size For Your Finger

You probably thought a bit about how someone might propose to you before it ever happened. It’s exciting to imagine where and how it might happen—and what the ring might look like. We’re human! So what happens when your partner proposes, pulls out a ring, and… record scratch… you don’t love this unconditional gift? Don’t panic. Before you allow this to ruin your excitement, know that you still have options. Here’s what to do if you don’t like your [engagement ring](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/where-you-can-and-cant-wear-your-engagement-ring).

## Give it some time.
So, it wasn’t love at first sight between you and the ring. That doesn’t mean it won’t grow on you. As unlikely as it sounds, when given some time, many begin to love their rings. First impressions can be deceiving with conditional gifts, so allow the shock to subside and sleep on it. Then wear it around for a few days. Pair it with your other __[jewelry](https://zola.app.link/oF4C3jyN71)__, ask your spouse why they chose it, and just live with it for a moment. You may find—especially if you don’t wear jewelry often—that you start to fall for it.

## Talk to your partner.
At the same time, don’t allow any negative feelings to linger. Avoid any possible brewing resentment by being honest with your partner. Open communication is a cornerstone of any marriage, even in the face of a difficult conversation. Simply be truthful and kind. Gently and tactfully let them know how you feel and say you’re open to discussing affordable options or compromises. In case you’re stuck, start with something like:

*“[Name], I’m so excited to be marrying you, and I want to be honest with you about something that’s been on my mind. An engagement ring is something I’ve been excited about for a long time and I want to be happy with it forever.”*

Also, try not to feel guilty. We know, easier said than done. But at the same time: Yes, you dislike your engagement ring. No, you’re not an awful person. When all is said and done, both you and your partner just want to be excited about being together. A small hurdle in the process won’t change that.

## Modify or personalize your engagement ring.
With some thought, some modifications might be all you need. Tweaking some details without trading out the entire ring is a creative, cost-effective solution. Examine what you like and dislike about it currently (such as the band, shape, or center stone). Then ask your jeweler if certain changes can be made. That way, you can maintain the parts you and your spouse love and update any you aren’t crazy about. Turn it into a creative project between the two of you.

This is also a potential solution for family heirlooms. If you’re inheriting a ring and would like for it to feel more you, broach the subject of adding some personalizations. This could mean resetting the stone, adding or removing side stones, or similar. Although, if you and your spouse plan on doing this, discuss it with the person who gave it to you, if possible. This keeps appreciation and respect at the forefront of the conversation and makes it less likely to feel offensive.

## Don’t make size the issue.
If you don’t like your ring because you truthfully wish the stone was bigger, tread lightly. Telling your partner that the ring isn’t big enough could come across as ‘this isn’t expensive enough.’ Don’t make your partner feel like they couldn’t afford what you wanted or expected—especially considering they likely purchased the best they could for you.

Ask yourself if it’s something else you don’t like, such as the material, type of stone, shape, or overall style. If it’s really about the stone size, though, keep your distaste quiet. You can always save up once you’re both more established and potentially get a bigger stone for an anniversary. This isn’t something to upset or concern your partner with.

## Be considerate of budget.
If you do plan to modify or get a new ring, be considerate of your partner’s __[budget](https://zola.app.link/8WoDoDyN71)__. Perhaps they can’t afford to get you your dream ring at the moment. That doesn’t mean they love you any less—or that you’re doomed to wear a ring you don’t adore. Be honest with yourself about whether or not this is a big deal and if you’re willing to compromise. Remember, this may feel paramount at the moment, but it’s far from the most important aspect of getting married. When suggesting alternatives to your spouse, ask that you’re both transparent about the expense and expectations.

## Turn your attention to your wedding band.
Whether you’ve chosen to keep your ring or just can’t bear to bring it up, all hope isn’t lost. You still have a chance to embellish it with the wedding band of your dreams. Adding your band may even change the way you feel about your [engagement ring](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/where-you-can-and-cant-wear-your-engagement-ring) entirely. For example, if you feel it’s lacking in a certain stylistic element (sparkle? gemstones?), make it present in your band. The addition just might turn the combination into a duo you adore.

## Know the legalities of the ring for broken engagements.
One pressing question many couples have is what are the legal ramifications and rules about giving a carat engagement ring back. Can you get a full refund? Does the date of purchase matter? Is it ok to offer the ring up for resale or take it to a pawn shop? The reality is that each state has its own rules on what you can do with an engagement ring, so check with your state law.

However, the first place you should start is by checking the return policy of the retailer’s store where the wedding ring was originally purchased. Even if you can’t return the ring — especially if you’ve gone beyond their days of purchase — they may have an exchange policy. That way, you can get another piece with the same value of the ring. If you purchased your diamond engagement ring on sale, the piece of jewelry may be more difficult to return, or you may be unable to exchange the original ring.

## Can you return engagement ring?
In the end, you may decide to trade in your current ring for something different. That’s OK! After all, it’s an expensive item you’ll rarely remove. If your significant other purchased the ring from a jewelry store, you should be able to return or exchange it within a given time frame. That is, it’s in its original condition—so be mindful of it while contemplating. Also keep in mind that policies differ from store to store. Some require a restocking fee, while others only allow exchanges. Ask your jeweler about your options.

If neither is possible—say, your ring was custom-made—you can still try and sell it. We recommend that all custom rings get approval before they’re purchased, but realize that that’s not always the case. You should be able to set a reasonable price if it’s in mint condition. Just be sure to handle the situation delicately and be aware that it could be difficult to resell. Then, once you’ve been able to return, exchange, or sell, make an afternoon of trying on rings together with your partner. Turn the situation positive and learn more about each other’s style.

## Are pawn shops an option?
Although you won’t get the original purchase price for your piece, you can take your ring to a pawn shop. You’ll need to have your ring in-store so that the shop can place a value on your ring and offer you a price. Ebay and other resale sites are also an option. However, be sure to have the GIA paperwork to validate the piece.

Fast forward: You’ve discussed things and taken the steps you need to. Now do your best to swiftly move on. Don’t dwell—your engagement is to be enjoyed. So, You Don't Like Your Engagement Ring—Here's What to Do

After you get engaged, chances are, you’re going to want to rock that [engagement ring](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/where-you-can-and-cant-wear-your-engagement-ring) anywhere and everywhere you go. While there are plenty of places you can (and should) wear your bling, there are also some places where wearing your ring is a no-no if you want to keep it clean, safe, and sparkly. Let’s make this easy. The diamond experts at [The Clear Cut](https://theclearcut.co/) helped us outline where you can wear your engagement ring and where you can’t wear your engagement ring.

<iframe width="720" height="560" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/TYy3og6L51E" title="When to Take Your Engagement Ring Off #engagementring #weddingplanning" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen></iframe>

## You CAN wear your engagement ring during your normal day-to-day activities.
Your engagement ring is a symbol of your commitment and upcoming marriage to your partner, so it makes total sense that you’re going to want to wear it as often as possible.

And the good news? For most of your normal, day-to-day activities, you can absolutely rock your bling. Going to work? Wear your engagement ring. Swinging by the grocery store? Wear your engagement ring. Meeting friends for dinner? Wear your engagement ring.

## You CAN’T wear your engagement ring to bed.
There is, however, one place you go every day that you shouldn’t wear your wedding ring—and that’s to bed.

Some people experience slight swelling in the hands overnight—and if your fingers swell while you sleep, it can not only feel uncomfortable, but it can make it harder to get your ring off in the morning. Plus, your ring can get snagged on your sheets, your blanket, your pajamas. It’s just not fun.

Wearing your engagement ring to bed could also put you at risk for injury. Diamonds can be sharp—and you don’t want to wake up in the middle of the night after scratching your face with your engagement ring.

## You CAN wear your engagement ring while tidying up—as long as you avoid harsh cleaning products.
There’s no need to take off your wedding ring for household chores like sweeping, laundry, or making the bed. There is, however, one exception to that rule—and that’s if you’re tackling any deep cleaning where you’ll be using harsh cleaning products that could damage your ring.

If you’re cleaning includes bleach, ammonia, or any other harsh chemicals, do yourself (and your diamond) a favor and take your engagement ring off beforehand.

## You CAN’T wear your engagement ring in the shower.
A shower is great for keeping you clean—but your ring? Not so much. All the products you use to clean your face, hair, and body can latch onto your diamond, creating a film that makes it look cloudy, dull, and all-around dirty.

Not to mention that you don’t want your ring to slip off your finger and down the drain. Anyone who’s seen Apollo 13 knows that. So, don’t wear your ring in the shower and wait to put it back on until all your after-shower grooming activities (like slathering on lotion) are complete.

## You CAN wear your engagement ring when you travel…
If you want to keep your ring on your finger during your travels (whether that’s on [your honeymoon](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/when-should-we-go-honeymoon), your [bachelorette party](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/pack-for-a-bachelorette-party), or any other upcoming trips), there’s no reason you can’t.

Just make sure to take the proper steps to keep your ring safe, like bringing along a ring stand to securely hold your ring while you sleep and never, ever leaving your ring unattended in a hotel room or vacation rental property.

You also shouldn’t travel with your engagement ring unless it’s insured. Read more about [engagement ring insurance here](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/reasons-to-insure-engagement-ring).

## ...but you CAN’T wear it to the beach.
One travel destination that’s not the best fit for your engagement ring? The beach. Taking care of your skin at the beach means a lot of sunscreen. All that sunscreen will leave your diamond looking cloudy and dirty (and it’s also a pain in the neck to clean!).

Plus, the ocean can spell disaster for your ring. Not only will the sand and saltwater quickly dirty up your ring, but your fingers actually get slightly smaller when you swim, and it goes without saying that losing your engagement ring in the ocean? Not exactly a day at the beach.

## Engagement Ring Care Tips: How to Clean Your Ring at Home

<iframe width="720" height="560" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/CH2kZ62j8h4" title="How to Clean Your Engagement Ring at Home #howto #engagementring #clean" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen></iframe>

No matter where you do or don’t wear your engagement ring, you always want to keep your bling as safe and sparkly as possible. Here are a few tips to keep it that way:

- __Get your engagement ring insured.__ It doesn’t matter how careful you are or where you do/don’t wear your ring. Things happen, and you want to [make sure you’re insured](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/reasons-to-insure-engagement-ring) and covered should your ring gets lost, stolen, or damaged.
- __Diamond looking dull? Clean up your ring at home.__ Wearing your ring certain places (like in the shower) can leave it looking dull. Get it back to sparkling with a [simple at-home engagement ring cleaning](https://theclearcut.co/blogs/clear-cut-classroom/cleaning-and-caring-for-your-engagement-ring). Fill a bowl with warm water and a few drops of Dawn dish soap and let your ring soak for a few minutes. Remove the engagement ring from the bowl, scrub with a soft-bristled toothbrush, and rinse off the excess soap with warm water (just make sure your sink drain is covered). Dry with a soft cloth or paper towel, and your ring will shine like new.
- __When in doubt, wear a stand-in ring.__ If you’re going somewhere that makes you feel uneasy about wearing your wedding ring, it’s always better to be safe than sorry. When in doubt, leave your ring in a safe, secure place at home and wear a stand-in ring. You can get a cute silicone version for less than $10.

Shopping for an engagement ring brings up one big question: how much should you actually spend? You'll hear everything from outdated salary rules to conflicting advice from friends and family, but the real answer depends on your unique financial situation and what feels right for both of you.

This breakdown covers what couples typically spend on engagement rings, the factors that drive those costs, and smart strategies to get the most value for your budget. You'll also learn how your ring choice fits into your overall wedding planning and financial goals, so you can make a decision that works for your relationship and your wallet.

## What's the Average Cost of an Engagement Ring?

Most couples spend between $3,000 and $6,500 on an engagement ring. The national average sits around $5,200, but this figure represents just one data point in a very wide range of spending choices.

Understanding what "average" means helps put these numbers in perspective. This figure comes from surveying thousands of couples about their actual spending, not what they think they should spend. It includes everything from $1,000 rings to $15,000 purchases, which creates a middle point that may not reflect what's right for your situation.

Regional differences play a big role in engagement ring costs. Couples in major metropolitan areas typically face higher prices across all wedding-related expenses. For example, total wedding costs in Manhattan, New York average $16,374 for venue costs alone, compared to $6,836 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin according to The Zola Wedding Cost Index (ZWCI). These regional price variations often extend to jewelry retailers as well.

Here's how engagement ring spending typically breaks down:

* **Most common range:** $1,000 to $4,000 (covers about one-third of all purchases)
* **Premium range:** $5,000 to $8,000 (popular for couples with higher budgets)
* **Luxury spending:** $10,000 and above (represents about 8% of all purchases)

Remember that these figures reflect what couples choose to spend, not what anyone should spend. Your perfect engagement ring budget depends entirely on your financial situation and what feels meaningful to both of you.

## How Much Should You Actually Spend?

Forget the old "three-month salary rule" that jewelry companies pushed for decades. This outdated guideline doesn't account for your rent, student loans, savings goals, or upcoming wedding expenses. Modern couples need a more practical approach to engagement ring budgeting.

The right amount to spend starts with honest conversations between partners. Many couples today shop for rings together, making the process more transparent and collaborative. This approach often leads to smarter financial choices and greater satisfaction with the final selection.

Consider these essential factors when setting your engagement ring budget:

* **Current financial health:** Your monthly income minus essential expenses like rent, utilities, and loan payments
* **Emergency savings:** Make sure ring shopping doesn't drain your safety net
* **Wedding planning costs:** Factor in venue deposits, vendor payments, and other upcoming expenses
* **Future financial goals:** Consider home down payments, career changes, or family planning

The most successful approach treats your engagement ring as part of your broader financial picture. If you're planning a larger wedding celebration, you might choose to spend less on the ring to save budget for photography, venue, or catering costs. Alternatively, if you prefer a simpler wedding, you could allocate more toward a ring you'll wear every day.

Your comfort level matters more than any arbitrary rule. Choose an amount that feels meaningful without causing stress about monthly bills or other financial obligations. Many couples find that setting a firm upper limit before shopping helps them stay focused on options within their means.

## What Affects Engagement Ring Prices?

Several key factors determine your final engagement ring cost, with the center stone typically representing 70-80% of the total price. Understanding these elements helps you make informed decisions about where to prioritize your spending.

The "4Cs", created in the 1940s by the GIA (Gemology Institute of America), is a universal method for establishing the quality of any diamond, though they apply to other gemstones too. Here's what each factor means for your budget:

1. **Cut:** Cut quality affects sparkle and light reflection. A well-cut stone will appear more brilliant and fiery than a larger stone with poor cut quality. This factor often provides the biggest visual impact for your investment.
2. **Color:** Color grades range from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow). Most engagement rings use stones in the D-J range. Moving from premium colorless grades to near-colorless options can create significant savings without noticeable differences to most people.
3. **Clarity:** Clarity measures internal flaws and inclusions. Unless you're examining stones under magnification, the difference between flawless and slightly included grades often goes unnoticed. Choosing lower clarity grades that still look clean to the naked eye maximizes value.
4. **Carat:** Carat weight determines size and represents the biggest price factor. Diamond prices increase exponentially at popular carat weights like 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 carats. Small adjustments like choosing 0.95 instead of 1.0 carats can create substantial savings.

Beyond the center stone, other elements impact your total investment:

* **Metal choice:** Platinum costs more than white gold, yellow gold, or rose gold options
* **Setting complexity:** Simple solitaire settings cost less than intricate vintage-inspired or halo designs
* **Brand premium:** Designer names and luxury retailers charge more for similar quality rings
* **Certification:** GIA or other reputable lab reports add to cost but provide quality assurance

## How to Get More Ring for Your Budget

Smart shopping strategies help you maximize visual impact and quality without increasing your spending limit. These approaches focus on getting the best value rather than simply finding the cheapest options.

Start with timing and research to set yourself up for success. Shopping during slower retail periods or around major sales events can provide better pricing. Take time to compare options from multiple retailers, including online vendors who often offer competitive pricing due to lower overhead costs.

**Focus on [cut quality](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/what-are-the-different-diamond-cut-options)** above all other factors. A well-cut stone with slightly lower color or clarity grades will look more impressive than a larger stone with poor light performance. This strategy provides maximum sparkle for your budget.

**Buy "shy" of popular carat weights.** Stones just under round numbers like 0.95 instead of 1.0 carats can save 15-20% while looking nearly identical. Most people can't distinguish these small size differences without direct comparison.

**Consider different shapes for better value.** Round diamonds command premium pricing due to high demand and cutting waste. Oval, cushion, or pear-shaped stones often provide more visual size for the same carat weight and budget.

Here are additional ways to stretch your engagement ring budget:

* Choose near-colorless diamond grades, such as G-I, instead of colorless D-F grades
* Select eye-clean clarity grades like VS2-SI1 rather than flawless options
* Opt for 14k gold instead of platinum for similar appearance at lower cost
* Consider lab-grown diamonds for 60-80% savings over natural stones
* Negotiate payment terms or ask about cash discounts

Focus your budget on elements that provide the most visual impact. If your partner values size, prioritize carat weight over premium color grades. If sparkle matters most, invest in excellent cut quality even if it means choosing a slightly smaller stone.

## Should You Consider Diamond Alternatives?

Alternative stones offer beautiful, durable options that can dramatically reduce your engagement ring budget without sacrificing style or meaning. These aren't compromise choices but legitimate preferences that many modern couples select for both practical and personal reasons.

Lab-grown diamonds provide the most direct alternative to natural stones. These gems have identical chemical, physical, and optical properties to mined diamonds but cost significantly less. The only difference is their origin, making them excellent choices for budget-conscious couples who want traditional diamond characteristics.

[**Moissanite offers exceptional brilliance and fire**](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/moissanite-vs-diamond)**.** This silicon carbide gemstone ranks 9.25 on the Mohs hardness scale, making it suitable for daily wear. Moissanite actually displays more rainbow flashes than diamonds, creating a distinctive sparkle that many people prefer.

**Colored gemstones provide personal meaning and unique beauty.** Sapphires come in every color except red and offer excellent durability for engagement rings. Emeralds and rubies create stunning vintage-inspired looks, though they require slightly more care due to lower hardness ratings.

Consider these benefits of alternative stones:

* Significant cost savings allow larger sizes or more elaborate settings
* Unique appearance helps your ring stand out from traditional choices
* Personal meaning through birthstones or meaningful colors
* Ethical considerations for couples concerned about mining practices
* Budget flexibility for other wedding or life expenses

The money saved by choosing alternatives often allows couples to upgrade other ring elements. You might afford a more intricate setting, higher-quality metal, or simply allocate those funds toward wedding expenses or shared financial goals.

Nearly 10% of couples now choose colored gemstones for engagement rings, reflecting growing interest in personalization and individual expression. This trend shows that alternative stones are becoming mainstream choices rather than budget substitutions.

## Consider the Cost of Your Whole Wedding

Your engagement ring represents just the beginning of many financial decisions during your wedding planning process. Taking a comprehensive approach helps ensure your ring choice aligns with your overall celebration goals and spending priorities.

Wedding costs continue rising, with average celebrations now reaching around $36,000 according to current industry data. Understanding how your engagement ring fits into this broader picture helps you make informed choices about where to splurge and where to save.

Many couples benefit from seeing their [complete wedding budget](https://www.zola.com/wedding/manage/budget) in one place. When you can visualize venue costs, photography expenses, and catering charges, it becomes easier to decide how much to allocate toward an engagement ring versus other priorities.

Consider how your engagement ring spending affects other wedding decisions. Below are a few wedding cost national averages according to The Zola Wedding Cost Index (ZWCI) :

* **Wedding Venue:** $8,573 ($6,900-$10,300 range)
* **Professional Wedding Photography:** $4,400
* **Catering:** $6,927
* **Hair & Makeup:** $982
* **Flowers**: $6,345
* **Music**:$1,567

Some couples prefer investing more in their engagement ring since it's worn daily for years to come. Others prioritize their wedding celebration since it creates shared memories with family and friends. Neither approach is wrong as long as it reflects your values and financial comfort level.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### How much should I spend on an engagement ring based on my salary?

Your salary provides just one piece of your financial puzzle. Consider your monthly expenses, debt payments, savings goals, and upcoming wedding costs rather than following percentage-based rules when setting your engagement ring budget.

### Is $2,500 enough for a beautiful engagement ring?

A $2,500 budget can absolutely buy a stunning engagement ring. Consider lab-grown diamonds, moissanite, or natural stones with smart compromises on color or clarity grades to maximize your options within this range.

### Should I go into debt to buy an engagement ring?

Avoid taking on debt for an engagement ring purchase. Choose an amount you can pay upfront or save toward rather than starting your engagement with financial stress that could impact your relationship and wedding planning.

### What if my partner expects an expensive ring but I can't afford it?

Open communication about budget limits and financial goals helps align expectations. Focus discussions on what the ring symbolizes rather than its cost, and consider shopping together to find options that work within your means.

Your guide to getting engaged. Find resources and expert advice on your journey to engagement from choosing the perfect ring to popping to question to photographing and announcing the proposal. We guide you step-by-step though the beginning of your forever!

You’re engaged! Whether you asked or answered, you just took the first step toward one of the happiest days (and chapters) of your life. You’ve probably heard that now the work begins—and, if you’re hoping to wed in a year or less, that’s true. Wait, wait, wait… don’t get overwhelmed. Yes, there’s wedding planning to do, but it doesn’t all need to happen at once.

## Just got engaged, now what?
<a id="just"> </a>

With the help of Zola, you’ll be off planning in a jiffy, but your list of to-do’s after engagement doesn’t have to be stressful. However, there are certain things you and your partner should accomplish in the first month (or so) after your engagement. Plus, you’ll discover the things you shouldn’t do right away, so you’ll know what to look forward to doing.

So, now that you’ve officially ticked “[getting engaged](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/topic/getting-engaged)” off the list, it’s time to begin. First, congrats! Second, here’s your checklist of what’s coming up next as you begin to plan your wedding day.

## 17 steps for the just engaged couple
<a id="steps"> </a>

### 1. Celebrate

It might feel tough, but refrain from reaching for your phone right away. Instead, take some time to celebrate your engagement with your new fiancé. Make your way over to your favorite bar or restaurant and enjoy each other’s company. Take a walk on the beach or through your favorite part of the city.

Regardless of the setting, enjoy the moment one-on-one (unless, of course, your loved ones were in on the [proposal](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/topic/getting-engaged/proposals) and are waiting in the wings). Before you know it, you’ll be up to your neck in wedding planning, so savor this time for all it’s worth. Bask in that newly engaged glow.

### 2. Share the news.
When you’re ready to tell others, start with those closest to you. This is likely your immediate family (parents and siblings), other close relatives, and best friends. Ring them personally or pay a visit, if possible, but steer clear of text messages. While it might seem like the most efficient way to tell your people, it can feel a bit impersonal. Save text announcements for people you aren’t as close with.

Typically, there’s a hierarchy that states you should tell family first. However, we realize that not all dynamics are the same. [Share the news of your engagement](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/engagement-announcements-101) with those you love in the order you deem most appropriate.

### 3. Alert the (social) media

That is if you’re on social media, of course. Once you tell your close family and friends, now it’s time to tell the world. Share a status update on Facebook to say that you’re just engaged, or post a photo or story on Instagram. Take a selfie with your partner, show off [your ring](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/dont-like-engagement-ring), or upload a photo someone snapped of the actual engagement moment.

You’re engaged—you should absolutely share the story. However, we do caution against spamming your various timelines with [engagement news](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/how-to-announce-your-engagement). There will be plenty of opportunities to share wedding planning highlights as you work out details. Maybe don’t exhaust your followers with too much upfront.

### 4. Tell your loved ones first

It's normal to be extremely thrilled and excited about the proposal. Of course, you want to let everyone within earshot—or everyone with access to a smartphone—know of the good news. We get it, it’s convenient to make a couple of posts online.

And while it’s completely up to you who you tell and how you do it, you probably don’t want the friend you lost touch with after college to find out via Facebook that you’re engaged—before your own parents or best friends.

Hold off on making any social media posts until you’ve delivered the news to your important people in person, if not via a phone call.

### 5. Start thinking about dates
Due to desirable venues and [certain months](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/choosing-your-wedding-month) getting booked well in advance, it’s wise to start thinking about dates quite early. This is especially the case if you’re looking to have your wedding within a year or two of getting engaged.

Start by discussing the ideal time of year or month with your significant other. Then, check for any holidays, birthdays, or other conflicts that you’d like to avoid double-booking.

Also, reach out to important loved ones, such as close friends and family members, to check for conflicts before settling on anything. Find out what works for you and those closest to you, and settle on a few days or weekends that you can ask potential [venues](https://www.zola.com/wedding-vendors/wedding-venues) about.

### 6. Start talking logistics
You and your partner have brainstormed locations, dates, and your wedding style—now’s the time to start setting things in stone. Be pragmatic in your discussions and decisions. Start by sitting down together and drawing out a personalized budget and timeline. Or, let Zola do the manual work for you – create a personalized wedding checklist, timeline and budget in just a few minutes. [Sign up and access our free wedding planning tools here](https://www.zola.com/inspiration/onboard).

There’s no official timeline you need to stick to but your own, by the way. If you want to be engaged for a couple of years, do that. Circle back to planning in a few months or years. If that’s not you, however, start with a location and date. Once you have both of those, reach out to venues. Figure out what they have for availability around your desired date and book it. From there, you can begin looking into and [securing other vendors](https://www.zola.com/wedding-vendors#:~:text=Explore%20wedding%20vendors%20by%20category), such as a wedding planner, catering, and entertainment.

### 7. Say your thank yous

Throughout the first few weeks of being engaged, you might receive celebratory cards and even gifts from friends and family. This is even more likely if you have an engagement party. Maintain a list of everyone who sends or brings you a card and/or gift, so that you can send out proper [thank you cards](https://www.zola.com/wedding-planning/thank-you-cards/shop).

### 8. Spend some time researching before booking

Remember how important it is to think about the big picture? You’ll want to put considerable time into that before booking a venue or any vendors for your big day. You’re just engaged, after all.

We know that locking down a space or [photographer](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/questions-to-ask-wedding-photographer) you love ASAP can be stressful, but trust us, you want to take the time to be really clear about what you both want before making anything official.

Try not to rush. Allow yourselves the time to dream, find inspiration, and bounce ideas and desires off of one another.

### 9. Hold off on sorting the wedding party

Maid of honor, best man, bridesmaids, groomsmen, and every bridal party and wedding party member in between… there’s potential for a lot of loved ones to be involved in your wedding day! While this is one of the most exciting parts of planning a wedding, we highly recommend you hold off a few weeks before asking anyone to officially take on a role. There are many details that can shape not only who you’ll want by your side but how many people you’ll be able to include.

Wait to ask your helpers until you’ve figured out your wedding’s basics—your budget, venue, and the type of wedding you want, to start.

### 10. Keep things vague with guests for now

As with requests and potential wedding party members, hold off on inviting anyone to your wedding until you have planning underway. The excitement of being newly engaged, added to the love and well-wishes from all around, can have you wanting to share the excitement and invite everyone. Refrain. Better to keep things polite and vague now than to be put in an awkward position when someone doesn’t make the [guest list](https://www.zola.com/wedding-planning/guests) later on.

### 11. Wait to purchase your wedding attire

It’s incredibly tempting to start trying on [wedding dresses](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/tips-wedding-dress-shopping), suits, and other [wedding day attire](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/topic/fashion-beauty/wedding-attire) soon after getting engaged. However, it’s crucial that you don’t jump in too soon. At this point, odds are you haven't yet decided on your budget or what you really want.

Rushing this process and making a purchase too soon out of excitement can lead to regret and financial issues down the line. Wait until you’re sure of what you’re looking for and can afford before making any try-on appointments.

### 12. Relax

One more time: you just got engaged, so slow down. Wedding planning has the potential to be pretty stressful right off the bat. With guest list creation, wedding venue touring, budget making, and every other aspect of the wedding planning process right around the corner, don’t forget to make time to enjoy being engaged.

Set some time aside for a relaxing date night, just the two of you. Put the beginning stages of planning on pause and focus on each other and how happy you are to be where you are right now.

### 13. Expect some unsolicited advice

Upon telling loved ones of your engagement, chances are you’re going to be hearing a lot of advice from those who have had a wedding. Take any and all unsolicited advice with grace, but don’t be quick to take it to heart.

While you may come to agree with and appreciate some advice here and there, you definitely don’t need to take or even consider it all. Offer a “thank you,” pocket what gems you can, and move forward.

### 14. Host an engagement party

After saying yes, it’s time to celebrate! Depending on how you want to announce your engagement, this should take place before or after you post to social media. If you like the idea of telling your friends and family all at once, plan a surprise [engagement party](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/how-to-plan-an-engagement-party) before making a public announcement. That way, the news is completely unexpected. Many couples also prefer to host a more formal engagement party (with invitations and maybe even scheduled activities) a few weeks after the engagement.

If your loved ones are already in the know, one or some of them may come forward and offer to host your party for you. Whatever you decide works—engagement parties aren’t necessary, so if you choose to have one, get creative with [engagement party ideas](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/engagement-party-ideas) and celebrate however you want. Be aware, though: You shouldn’t invite anyone to the engagement party that you won’t invite to the wedding. Plan accordingly.

### 15. Book an engagement shoot

This is another optional to-do. If an engagement photoshoot doesn’t sound like your style, stay with us for just a second. Engagement shoots are popular for a few reasons. Mainly, they’re usually free and come as an additional component of your wedding photography package. If you haven’t yet [booked a photographer](https://www.zola.com/wedding-vendors/wedding-photographers) (totally normal at this stage, by the way!), you can either wait until you do or you can hire another local photographer for this shoot.

Couples also often see an [engagement shoot](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/how-to-take-authentic-engagement-photos) as an opportunity to get comfortable in front of the camera together. Again, if you have a photographer booked, this is a great time to get to know more about his or her style. This way, you’ll hopefully feel more natural when your photo is being taken from all angles come wedding day. Use your engagement photos on your [save the dates](https://www.zola.com/wedding-planning/save-the-date/shop), wedding website, and/or wedding invitations.

### 16. Think big picture

Now that you’re no longer just engaged, your engagement celebrations have probably slowed. Now it feels like time to really start thinking about your big day. Don’t stress yourself out by immediately looking into every single detail, though. Start off by discussing big-picture ideas with your partner. Now is the time to figure out if you’re both on the same page with your dream wedding style and guest count.

Talk about everything from wedding location and wedding size to a potential color palette and wedding date options. And, of course, always be open to your partner’s ideas. Stay organized off the bat by gathering inspiration in a place that’s easy to access and edit. Pinterest board, Google Doc, computer folder, binder—whatever works for you.

### 17. Make time to soak it all in

We’re aware that we’re reiterating here, but it’s worth the reminder. Don’t get so immediately wrapped up in wedding planning that you forget to enjoy being just engaged. Skipping over this part can lead to considerable stress later on. Pop some bubbly, spend quality time with your fiancé(e), and bask in the excitement from all of those closest to you.

## Engagement rings and wedding bands
<a id="rings"> </a>

If you were over the moon to put your new [ring](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/topic/getting-engaged/rings) on… only to find it didn’t quite fit, you’ll want to get it sized ASAP. This won’t be the most exciting part of getting engaged, but it’s necessary if you want to avoid losing your special stone.

Speaking of losing your ring, enter ring insurance! When it comes to what to do after getting engaged, sorting out insurance definitely isn’t the most exciting task. While it's not super sexy, it's highly recommended. Most jewelry experts suggest taking out a policy with a jewelry insurance provider (and not extending your homeowner’s or renter’s insurance to cover it). Head to a jeweler or another certified professional and get an appraisal. Here’s more on [engagement ring insurance](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/reasons-to-insure-engagement-ring).
