About this venue

The Hotel John Marshall opened in 1929 as the largest hotel in Virginia. Its rooms welcomed Elizabeth Taylor, Mary Tyler Moore, and Elvis Presley along with political figures such as Presidents Nixon, Ford, and Carter. After sitting vacant for over 20 years (save a few attempts to open) the building recently underwent an $80 Million renovation, spanning two years of construction to strip it back to the bones and restore it to its original 1920's grandeur.

The elegant Marshall Ballroom will wow your guests with nine vintage crystal chandeliers and three walls of grand, thirty-foot windows. The lead-paned glass encased in elaborate hand-crafted molding emulates that classic Richmond feels.

    Wedding

    Absolutely, hands down the best venue. I would have my wedding there again. Maria and her stuff were the easiest of people to work with. Everything from the food and decor, to drinks and table settings; everyone worked to make it the best day ever. Having in house catering is underrated and more people should choose a venue like The John Marshall and Homemade by Suzanne’s. When you have a 2 in 1 great deal like this you don’t have to worry about coordinating things yourself, which is a huge plus when you plan your own wedding!! Both my husband and I are so grateful for everything. It made the day go so smoothly and stress free. The ballrooms being beautiful just make the whole venue come together. 1000% would recommend having your wedding here!!

    The John Marshall wedding

    I cannot say enough good things about my ceremony and reception at The John Marshall! The service and food are incredible and the ballrooms are absolutely gorgeous. Maria and Tyler were great to work with, they answered all my emails and questions promptly and made sure our wedding was everything we wanted. I would highly recommend The John Marshall for any event or wedding.

Our staff arrives two hours prior to your event but the building has a 24-hour security guard. If by chance the ballroom is not booked the evening(s) prior to your reception, you are more than welcome to come in early to decorate, setup, and drop off items.
We are happy to provide you with a list of recommendations based on our past experiences with bakers, musicians, DJs, lighting, photographers, and more. However, we do not require that you use our recommendations and you will not be charged for outside vendors. We do not allow outside catering (other than cakes and dessert) as Homemades by Suzanne is the exclusive 5-star caterer for the ballrooms!
Yes, the ballrooms make a lovely site for your ceremony. Our staff will take care of turning the room from ceremony to reception while guests enjoy a cocktail hour in the lobby. Rehearsal time can be reserved as available and we offer a complimentary dressing suite. Please note there is an additional ceremony fee.
We have five-foot rounds that best accommodate 8 guests for a seated dinner and 10 for a cocktail buffet with no place setting. We also have eight-foot rectangular tables for a special wedding party table and smaller four foot and three-foot rounds for the cake and sweetheart tables.
Our house linens are a light gold/champagne brocade (floor length with topper), the newly purchased ballroom chairs offer a padded natural color fabric. The dishware & glassware are bone china and crystal, and the flatware is a simply gorgeous Old English style pattern. You can also rent alternate linens, toppers, or chairs from an outside vendor if you prefer.
Being in a business district, there is ample street parking on most weekends and the meters are free after 6 pm Friday through Monday. We can also procure valet service or reserve the parking deck located on the next block (guest pay / prepaid by the host).
