How much does hair and makeup cost for a wedding?

According to Thumbtack, wedding makeup artists cost $90–$475 per person on average in 2022. Here at Zola, we recommend putting aside around $300 for your own wedding hair and makeup. Services for wedding party members are generally less expensive, as the artist or stylist will spend less time perfecting the look. Be sure to have a transparent conversation with your wedding party if you expect them to cover their own costs.

How long does wedding hair and makeup take to do?

The more involved the look, the more time it will take. In general, allocate 60–90 minutes for your own looks and 30–45 minutes for each member of the wedding party. Extensions, extra thick hair, and intricate makeup all take longer. Communicating who (with pictures and descriptions) is getting what (again, with photos) to your stylists will help them plan an accurate timeline.

Who usually pays for hair and makeup for the wedding party?

Traditionally, whoever is asking for the services should pay. However, this may not be in the budget for every couple. If you’re planning on having your wedding party pay, be transparent when you first ask them to be in the wedding party itself. Then, they can choose whether it’s possible for them to participate.

“Honestly I don’t have one bad thing to say about the make up it was perfect, I loved the make up and hair it made me feel like a Barbie. I did the trial first, which I do recommend it, because we changed a few things from it for the wedding and that just made it exactly what I wanted. The reason why I’m giving it 4 stars it’s because of her not being based in Phoenix so it makes it less flexible. I asked her like 5 months before the wedding if she could remove just the hair of one of my bridesmaids because she got pregnant and wasn’t coming, and she said no because of the travel she already was counting with that money which I understood. Then for the trial, I got my date (which is hard to request specific dates with my work schedule ) and she canceled last minute ( in her favor it was a really good reason). Then I tried to book it the next month like we talked about and she had another issue and couldn’t travel to do it, so we didn’t have the trial until a few weeks before the wedding, which was okay but I just feel like I was being very flexible to someone that was not being flexible to me at all. And even though she said she doesn’t charge for travel fees, she did charge me 260 for the drive to one area in Phoenix to the venue, which I think it’s a little high (but I’ve never done this before so it might be normal). And my last complain is she told me she was going to give me a touch up kit for the wedding, and when I asked for it she gave me a used lipstick and some setting powder with no brush or sponge or anything, that did not help at all to retouch my make up after some tears. She probably just ran out of them. But like I said at the beginning I have zero complains about the actual make up and hair, it was perfect I do recommend her a lot if you live in LA, if you are out of her area just keep in mind there won’t be a lot of flexibility. (I put pictures of the wedding and trial )”

“I took a chance booking my hair stylist through Zola, but I am so glad I did. I came across Bree on here and I was so impressed by her reviews, that I had to reach out. I had a phone consultation with her and she made me feel so comfortable and confident immediately. She was calm, positive, and kind, so it was a no-brainer to go with her. The day of my trial we finally met and it was beyond successful. She listened to everything I was saying and took the time to really understand and emulate what I envisioned. In that moment I knew I made the right choice. She was able to style my hair with different pieces, which I didn’t even think about, and gave her honest opinion. She didn’t make me feel pressured into purchasing any of her hair pieces or adding on day-of services (for her to come to the venue/touch-ups). She was honest and open about everything from start to finish, which is always appreciated! My mother and mother-in-law both went to Bree for a trial and both complimented how great she was. The day of my wedding she was such a pleasure to be around. Bree and her assistant, Kerri, were communicative and a positive presence that helped ease any morning jitters. I received so many compliments on my hair and my bridal party had great things to say about their experience. Bree came to the venue and helped with putting in and taking out my veil; it ended up being the best decision to add that on, since I had a very windy rooftop ceremony. She made me feel calm, confident, and relaxed and I couldn’t have asked for a better experience!”

“I could not be more thrilled with my experience with Mrs. Hercules Glam Spa. From first contact through to the wedding day, and even post-wedding - everything was fantastic. I was GORGEOUS and had an absolute blast getting ready with Corinne and her team, the energy was perfect. It was truly the best start to my wedding day I could have ever imagined. On the wedding day we had: my bridal hair and makeup, 5 bridesmaids’ makeup, mother of the bride makeup, and 4 bridesmaid hair styling - so quite a bit going on. Corinne made sure that all of us felt 100% comfortable and happy with the end results. We were right on schedule the entire time (which was very important to me) and I never felt stressed. When planning it was imperative for me to have LGBTQ friendly vendors. One of my bridesmaids is a trans woman and she said she felt safe, happy, and empowered while having her hair and makeup done - y’all, she was STUNNING. I am a natural curly girl and kept my curls for the wedding… which was outside… in Florida… in 80% humidity - so you’d assume my hair would frizz. Folks, I’m not exaggerating when I say my hair (and makeup) was still PERFECT when I got home around 1am after the wedding. Simply put, Corinne and her Mrs. Hercules Glam Spa team was wonderful and I highly, HIGHLY recommend.”
