The start of a relationship is often the most thrilling time, filled with chemistry and promise. Your moments together feel fun, joyous, and wonderful, as you learn new things about each other and experience life together for the first time.

This period is a key testing ground to show off your personality and see if you’re a good fit for one another. And the best part? During this honeymoon phase, many memorable dates can be inexpensive—or even free!—which can help take the pressure off. Think of this time as an opportunity to get to know one another, not spend time and money on lavish dates.

Here, our favorite fun and unique date ideas for new couples.

Go on a Dining Adventure

Sample a restaurant or cuisine that’s new to both of you. Or, select an area with several eateries, having an aperitif and appetizer at one, the main course at another, and finishing with coffee, dessert, or cocktails at a third. You can also cook a meal together, enroll in a cooking class, or do a wine tasting or brewery tour.

Window Shop Through the Past

One of our favorite creative date ideas is to browse through antique or second-hand shops, yard sales, or flea markets. Record or book stores provide a chance to learn each other’s tastes in the arts. You don’t even have to buy anything—it’s fun just to take a look around. This is an especially fun date idea for when it's raining or snowing outside.

Enjoy the Great Outdoors

Pack a picnic and find a park or beach to take a hike, rent a boat or kayak, go for a swim, or even camp. Do a bike tour together as a couple or go with an organized group. Take a dinner or brunch cruise, go ice skating, or just toss around a frisbee. If you don’t want to work up a sweat, take in a play performed al fresco or just find a scenic place to watch the sunset as a couple.

Find a Fun Festival or Fair

Looking for a fun date idea? Instead of going to the same old dinner spot, switch things up by riding the Ferris wheel and snacking on cotton candy at your local fair. Spend a day playing games, sampling fairground delicacies, and taking a whirl on thrilling rides.

Look to the Stars

Grab an astronomy book, and aim a telescope at the stars, trying to identify what you see. (Don’t forget a blanket and hot chocolate.) Or, visit a planetarium—the sky’s the limit.

Take a Ghost Tour

Explore the supernatural world on a ghost tour or in a haunted house—and don’t miss the opportunity to hold on tight to your special someone.

Make It an Old-Fashioned Date

Stop by a drive-in, mini-golf course, bowling alley, or classic diner for a retro and romantic time. A stroll down a boardwalk at sunset still can’t be beaten.

Express Yourself

Show off your skills at a karaoke bar or a dance class. Take a drawing, painting, photography, or pottery class together, or simply grab a pencil and notebook and find a scene to sketch.

Get Inspired

Visit a museum or art gallery, watch a movie or play, or attend a poetry or book reading or a concert. Discussing what you liked and didn’t like is a great way to learn more about each other.

Support Local Amateurs

Stop by an open mic night, improv, or stand up show, and show your support to up-and-coming talent.

Seek Some Thrills

Get your heart racing by going rock climbing, bungee jumping, or even skydiving.

Challenge Each Other

Make it a game night with your favorite card, board, or video games, or stop by a local bingo night or arcade. Engage in a match of tennis or ping-pong. A little friendly competition is always a fun activity.

Walk on the Wild Side

Visit a zoo or aquarium and compare your favorite animals. Some zoos even have behind-the-scenes tours or classes you can sign up for.

Do Some Good

Consider volunteering at a soup kitchen or local charity to give back to your community. This great date night benefits not only the couple but their neighborhood as well.
