A hidden gem in the heart of San Diego's historic Balboa Park, the garden is a truly unique and ethereal venue. The garden features authentic Japanese architecture, multiple koi ponds and waterfalls, bonsai, cherry blossom trees and wisteria arbors. For full-scale weddings, 'mix and match' your ceremony, cocktail hour and reception locations; every wedding is unique. The Lower Garden provides both indoor or outdoor spaces for dancing and dining. Our daytime Minimony package is perfect for couples looking to hold a small ceremony at the garden and have the benefit of all the garden's photo op spots, with a reception elsewhere.

    Beautiful and Zen Garden Wedding

The Japanese Friendship Garden was a stunning place to get married. We got married on the koi pond deck this past Saturday. The location felt very private and serene with the way Marina sections off garden paths. Plenty of beautiful photo opportunities throughout the garden. Marina, as venue manager, was professional, communicative, and very warm and friendly. She made us feel comfortable and confident that we would have a beautiful wedding, and we did.

    Wedding Venue Review

Despite the venue and location being beautiful, my wife and I had a very disappointing experience with the venue staff on our wedding day. The issues began immediately during vendor and family entry for setup. The venue coordinator, Nate, gave several of our family members a difficult time entering the venue despite us providing a list of approved names in advance. Many of these individuals were immediate family members from both the bride’s and groom’s sides who were there to help decorate and prepare for the ceremony. Rather than being accommodating on what is naturally a busy and important day, entry was delayed, which ultimately pushed our ceremony back by over an hour. Unfortunately, the unprofessionalism did not stop there. Nate and the security staff (which we paid for as part of our contract) continued to be rude and unaccommodating throughout the event. Multiple guests who utilized the shuttle service we paid for complained that the female security driver was rude, dismissive, and even turned some guests away, forcing them to walk to the venue. Because our ceremony was delayed, the rest of our wedding timeline became rushed, including our first dance, speeches, and toasts. Adding to our disappointment, my wife and I personally observed multiple rats running around the lower pavilion area, particularly near the food service area. We sincerely hoped our guests did not notice them. At the conclusion of the wedding, Nate and his staff continued their unprofessional behavior while our family members were helping remove decorations and clean up, as required by our contract. Family members were repeatedly yelled at to “get out” and move out of the way while vendors were breaking down equipment. Security staff made several comments about them “staying late” again and making us feel like an inconvenience on what was supposed to be one of the most memorable days of our lives (Even though we cleaned and got out on time).Considering that security services were included as part of the contract, it felt as though we paid for staff who were angry, impatient, and unwilling to provide basic customer service. My wife and I spent months planning and coordinating our wedding so that we could fully enjoy our special day. Instead, one of the lasting memories we will have is the rude and unprofessional treatment we received from venue staff. I cannot recommend this venue. It is unfortunate because the location itself is beautiful and offers a stunning setting for a wedding. However, the poor customer service, lack of professionalism, and overall treatment of our family and guests overshadowed what should have been a wonderful experience. The time, money, and stress simply were not worth it.

    Spring wedding

We loved working with Marina and the preferred vendors at the garden. They truly made our wedding day a magical experience! Highly recommend planning your ceremony during cherry blossom season if you can; the garden is beautiful all year round, but the cherry blossoms are truly special. We cannot recommend the garden enough!

    Beautiful Garden Wedding

I am a wedding planner and The Japanese Friendship Garden is one of my favorite venues. Everywhere you look there is beauty. They have gorgeous flowers and trees, coy ponds, waterfalls, and bridges. There is an incredible amount of natural beauty even in the winter. My couples love this as it makes for magical photos. Their events coordinator, Marina is wonderful! She is incredibly organized, responsive, and knowledgeable about the venue. Her warm and professional presence puts my couples at ease and her exceptional organization keeps things running smoothly. I can tell she genuinely cares about the couples and their guests. The rest of the team at the garden is also great to work with. I highly recommend JFG&M to anyone looking to get married. Also, if you have a chance to attend their Dream of Niwa Wedding Expo, definitely do that!

    The Fearless Leader Marina

I'm one of the preferred vendors of the Japanese Friendship Garden and without a doubt Marina has proven to be to exude confidence in her ability to manage weddings and the space. From the details of the history of the venue and all of its architecture, she cares and it shows. She managed and ran yesterday the entire Dream Of Niwa wedding expo, which amounted to over 200 people. Something that would make a lot of people crack, she handled with grace and made sure everything was done. Did I mention the ceremony spaces you can choose from? Holy moly. What's amazing about the JFGM is that the venue ambiance is the nature, the koi fish deck, the beautiful river that flows throughout the garden. Spectacular staff by the way who literally helped me unload my truck the last event we did with them, they are the dream wedding space and team.
