She attended Middlebury College in Vermont, where she earned an Anthropology degree and won the Middlebury College Concerto Competition in 2009. She also had the opportunity to record with a tango band while studying abroad in Buenos Aires. In 2010, Ellen moved west to study at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. There, she earned a Master of Music in violin performance and gave two solo recitals. She was a member of a gypsy folk band that played throughout San Francisco.
