Mountain Shadows Retreat is the ultimate ANTI-VENUE for the modern couple that doesn't want to be told what they have to do. You are renting a private retreat in the mountains and hosting your friends and family however you want. Located on three private acres overlooking the American River Canyon. Featuring a luxury interior and breathtaking views, we provide the perfect backdrop for your wedding weekend. A stunning private venue, Mountain Shadows offers you and your loved ones a chance to unwind, connect, and experience inspiration in nature. All events are custom-tailored to meet your specific goals and desires; if you can dream it, we can make it happen. Every group is different. All wedding packages include lodging 15-25 guests on-site and 50+ additional guests at Miner's Camp, our sister property that is located walking distance. The "ANTI-VENUE" Mountain Shadows does not have packages or menus like traditional locations. ASK US ABOUT 2-NIGHT MID-WEEK MICROS. Shadows is a 3-5 night Experience. Shadow's groups eat whatever they want, drink whatever they want, and host their friends and family however they want. Shadow's does not do food, beverage, or rentals. It's all about spending quality time with friends and family. NOT the in and out experience. The Anti Venue experience.

Seamless experience
Our wedding is coming up this September, but I wanted to take a moment to discuss our experience thus far and how excited we are to celebrate our marriage at Mountain Shadows Retreat. Mountain Shadows Retreat, also known as the "Anti-Venue," provides an exceptional weekend wedding experience. Their communication has been efficient, helpful, and reassuring throughout the planning process. The venue itself is absolutely beautiful, with an open, DIY feel and an amazing mountain views that takes our breath away. They've been incredibly accommodating, helping us with a seamless venue tour and booking, as well as setting up not only our wedding accommodations, but also additional cabins for our guests to stay in when we came to initially view the property. They even helped us to book cabins for ourselves and our parents for an upcoming "planning visit." We knew we wanted more than a single day event, and the fact that the venue allows for up to 24 guests/family to stay on-site for the entire weekend is a game-changer, allowing us to truly soak in the entire experience rather than just a single day. We are so excited for our wedding day this September!

The PERFECT Long-Weekend Wedding Venue
We truly couldn't have asked for a more perfect venue for our wedding day. We were able to stay at Shadows for the long weekend - which allowed us to set up and DIY most our wedding. Our family and closest friends got to stay with us on the property for the weekend, which made it feel so much more special - and made us feel like we had so much time to take our wedding weekend in with everyone (rather that just one day). The venue was so spacious, which made the event feel large and free - rather than everyone being on top of each other. We used the following spaces for each part of our wedding: - Backyard grass and overlook - Ceremony - Front yard grass - Dinner & Speaches - Barn - Desserts, Snacks, Seating / Lounge Area, Guest Book - Barn Deck - Dancefloor & DJ We worked with Scena as our day-of coordinator and she was THE BEST! Helped so much with timeline, setup, coordination, rehersal, clean up - EVERYTHING! Truly could not say enough good things about her.

Retreat indeed… It was perfect!
MSR was by far our dream venue. Not only are the views and property absolutely stunning, but Scena and Susanne were incredible to work with. Wedding planning is hard and stressful, there’s always something you didn’t think of, but, believe me, Scena already has and has already worked it out for you. A God send Our family and us had so much fun staying here as well. We loved being able to stay for 4 days, wind down with our close family after the wedding, and relive the moments together. It truly makes the weekend more special when you don’t have to pack up and get out the very next day. I could go on and on about how wonderful our weekend was. I highly recommend MSR and working with Scena and Susanne. It’s worth the trust me!

Bride
We will be getting married at Mountain Shadows in August and we are so excited. We have worked with Suzanne since finding the venue on Zola 7 months ago. She has been easy to communicate with, has taken every call we made to get clarity on things, and responds in a timely manner. We were able to go stay at their sister property miners camp which is amazing also. I cried when I saw the view from where we will be saying I do! I can't wait to have our wedding at this beautiful place.

Mixed Review
I’ve gone back and forth about writing this review because my wedding weekend was truly one of the best experiences of my life. However, there were several troubling aspects of working with the day-of coordinator that I wish I had known in advance. Things that didn’t go well: Poor communication during planning: Dimensions and photos provided were outdated, and several messages went unanswered. Scheduling challenges: It was difficult to arrange a planning visit — mine was rescheduled even after my parents had already purchased plane tickets to attend. Unclear expectations: There were multiple miscommunications, and several promised details were not delivered during setup and the reception (including cake, desserts, altar decorations, and additional bar setup). Last-minute invoices: I received unexpected invoices just days before check-in. Professionalism: Multiple guests mentioned the coordinator’s attitude, and several felt uncomfortable seeing the coordinator and staff eating and drinking inside the rental house with our belongings present. Things that did go well: The team provided a discount for having the restrooms unlocked during the welcome dinner. The venue itself is stunning and offers great lodging options on-site and nearby at the Miner’s Camp — which was a huge plus given the size of our guest list. All in all, I had an incredible weekend surrounded by loved ones, and the venue itself was a wonderful choice. However, the poor communication and unprofessional attitude of the coordinator made the planning process and wedding day more stressful than it needed to be. I would still recommend this venue, but with the understanding that you’ll need to be very organized, know exactly what you want, and be prepared to handle many details yourself — regardless of the promises made during planning.
