The ceremony space is so beautiful, and the bridal suites are so amazing for photos and just to enjoy before the ceremony. The Hawthorn Portsmouth NH
  • Up to 250 guests
  • Raw space
  • Indoor
  • Starts at $15,000

Our story begins in 1858 when Frank Jones arrived in Portsmouth with a dream of brewing ale. Within three decades, The Frank Jones Brewery became the largest ale producer in the country. As ale production expanded, the brewery added a cooperage and scald house to clean the barrels. Workers used scalding hot rocks to sanitize barrels because soap and water would cause them to warp. Once cleaned, the barrels were filled with Jones’ signature ales. The Hawthorn now occupies this Scald House, retaining its original red-brick walls, towering beams, and industrial windows. “Cheers,” then, has a whole new meaning at The Hawthorn. When you raise your glass at your event, you’ll be toasting in a place that’s positively brewing with Portsmouth ale-making heritage and local history.

From 1916 to 1979, Long Hill was the summer home of noted author and editor of The Atlantic Monthly, Ellery Sedgwick. He summered here with his first wife, Mabel Cabot Sedgwick, an accomplished horticulturist, gardener, and author of The Garden Month by Month, and his second wife, Marjorie Russell Sedgwick, a rare plants specialist—both of whom created a delightful, enchanting landscape, surrounded by more than 100 acres of woodland. Today, visitors delight in the beauty of Long Hill’s structured and naturalistic gardens as well as a network of woodland trails. From the moment we first reached out to the team at Long Hill, their communication was fast, helpful, hands-on and incredibly kind. They truly went above and beyond to ensure our wedding day was like something out of a fairytale. The venue itself was a picturesque garden, with an ethereal, storybook feel that made our special day feel like it was straight out of a dream. The staff helped us navigate all the timing and logistics, and were especially thoughtful in how they handled the dynamics of our large, blended family. Helena, the event coordinator, was a true gem - she provided invaluable guidance on the floor plans and decor that helped bring our vision to life. From start to finish, the Long Hill team made our wedding day perfect, and I would highly recommend them to any couple looking for a truly magical experience.
