Historic, breath taking 4 story barn The farm and barn are about 200 years old, and the barn was originally used for cows. Over the years, it has been very well taken care of, so the original beams are still there, in sizes and shapes that you just can't get anymore! The owners are the third generation in their family to take care of the property and are very grateful to be the current stewards. The barn renovations completed in 2020 and it is all ADA compliant and up to code. In the barn, there is a full sound system, 14 chandeliers, a beautiful live edge bar top, two high end composting toilets (the flushing kind!), massive barn blue doors on each end, and a grand entrance staircase. The barn holds up to 200 people and is big enough that you don't have to rent a tent even with tables and chairs, a major benefit and money saver! In the event of rain, you can use the barn as a ceremony and reception space.

Throughout the 19th Century, this historic home was lived in and preserved by several influential Plymouth families and remodeled in 1898 by noted architect Joseph Chandler. The mansion holds over three centuries of history, and we would be honored for our home to be a part of yours. The manicured Mayflower Society House and Gardens offer multiple options for indoor and outdoor events or ceremonies. The large and open Solarium is perfect for parties up to 40 seated. Whether you’re planning a corporate event or an intimate catered dinner, parties of all sizes are a perfect fit. We can accommodate up to 40 guests inside The Mayflower Society House and up to 175 outside with the optional installation of a tent. This historical site was first designed in 1927 for former governor of Massachusetts, Alvan Fuller. We are one of the last working formal estate gardens of the early 20th century. The meticulously maintained rose gardens, with over one hundred varieties, begin their season long bloom cycle in late June and continue through October. There is a Japanese garden, complete with a small bridge and Koi pond, which blooms in early May. The English perennial plantings provide a continuous array of color and interest from spring until fall. The gardens are lined within large sculpted hedges, and the rose beds are framed in an array of superbly kept turf paths.

Our story begins in 1858 when Frank Jones arrived in Portsmouth with a dream of brewing ale. Within three decades, The Frank Jones Brewery became the largest ale producer in the country. As ale production expanded, the brewery added a cooperage and scald house to clean the barrels. Workers used scalding hot rocks to sanitize barrels because soap and water would cause them to warp. Once cleaned, the barrels were filled with Jones’ signature ales. The Hawthorn now occupies this Scald House, retaining its original red-brick walls, towering beams, and industrial windows. “Cheers,” then, has a whole new meaning at The Hawthorn. When you raise your glass at your event, you’ll be toasting in a place that’s positively brewing with Portsmouth ale-making heritage and local history.
