From its historical beginnings as a stoic munitions depot, The Armory experienced a beautiful transformation to showcase a sophisticated ballroom, classy built-in bar and impressive commercial kitchen. Original element of the 1928 Armory construction and subsequent Newman Recreations Center were incorporated into the even space renovation to provide the perfect blend of past and present.Iron-barred doors used to secure armers and thick concrete walls reinforced with brick to accommodate the National Guard Armory and shooting range lend a rustic industrial aesthetic. Wood from the recreation center bleachers line the dramatic bar and the orginial hardwood floor was dressed up to grace the ballroom. The vaulted timber ceilings and exposed truss work allow the dazzling period chandeliers an opportunity to lend an air of elegance to the urban decor. The helpful staff can easily join the East, Oak, and West Rooms into a combination that best suits the desired needs and capacity. Located on the corner of Ridge and Plain streets in La Porte, Indiana, the La Porte Civic Auditorium is a highlight of the City of La Porte and the La Porte Park and Recreation Department. This beautiful, regal building was a gift to the City of La Porte from a local philanthropist, Maurice Fox of the Fox Woolen Mills, in honor of his parents. The stipulation of this gift was that the building be made available to all individuals, Civic and educational groups or bodies. The Civic Auditorium was dedicated on March 19, 1930, and has since hosted thousands of regional and community events. These events have included everything from athletic contests to organizational conferences, trade shows to family weddings and charitable concerts to stage plays. Each unique and each a celebration in its own right. Renovated in recent years to accommodate new events and needs, the historical integrity of this beautiful building remains to shine bright.
