Experience Coordinating a Wedding - Pickering Barn

My experience at Pickering Barn was one of the most frustrating and unprofessional venue experiences I have encountered. Before the wedding, there were extensive email exchanges and several pages of contracts with repeated questions. I understand contracts and requirements are normal. However, the repeated questions and highly specific requirements, with an expectation that every detail be followed precisely, felt excessive. Given that specificity, I expected the venue's information to be equally accurate. I specifically questioned the table measurements because they did not appear consistent with what I observed. Because non-returnable linens had already been purchased based on those measurements, I repeatedly asked for confirmation and was assured they were accurate and the tables comfortably accommodated 7-8 guests. On the wedding day, we discovered the tables actually comfortably seated 10 or more. Every linen ordered according to the venue's measurements was therefore the wrong size, including guest, buffet, DJ, and entry tables. When I raised this issue during setup, I was repeatedly told I must have ordered the wrong linens. After more than 12 years of coordinating events, ordering correctly sized linens is a basic responsibility I am familiar with. Shortly afterward, the primary venue coordinator left, leaving Clive in charge. He was courteous and genuinely tried to help, but without the authority and information to resolve venue-related issues. We ultimately had to scramble to purchase inexpensive plastic tablecloths, creating unnecessary stress, budget waste, and additional expense. The linen issue was only one of approximately eight preventable problems. During cleanup, we discovered the venue's dumpster was already roughly half full before our event began. Despite its inadequate capacity, the contract required all trash to fit inside and warned that bags left outside could result in penalties. Ultimately, a wedding guest in formal attire climbed into the dumpster to compress the garbage so we could comply. This was unacceptable. Afterward, I provided the venue with a list of the issues and met with the Recreation Supervisor alongside the groom in hopes of reaching a reasonable resolution. Instead, my professional experience was questioned because my business does not have a significant online presence. The implication that a lack of social media equates to a lack of experience was inaccurate and dismissive. Rather than addressing the several issues, the conversation repeatedly returned to the linens. I was repeatedly treated as though I did not know how to order them correctly, despite having questioned the venue's measurements multiple times and being assured they were correct. Instead of acknowledging that the information provided could have been inaccurate, responsibility was shifted back onto me and finally to the linen manufacturer. After more than a decade of planning events, being spoken to as though I was incapable of completing a basic responsibility of event coordination was incredibly condescending. In lieu of any offer of compensation for the substantial financial loss, stress, and unprofessional treatment we experienced, the supervisor offered three hours of venue use for anniversary photos, to be scheduled between other events. Given the circumstances, this felt inadequate. I sincerely hope other couples receive a better experience as a result of the changes discussed during that disappointing meeting.

    Best summer wedding!!

From our first conversation, the team at Pickering Barn made us feel supported every step of the way. They answered our questions quickly and never made us feel rushed, which honestly made the whole planning process so much easier. The venue itself is stunning, the grounds are sprawling and the gazebo is gorgeous, with landscaping that looked fresh and polished on our wedding day. We also appreciated how clean the bathrooms stayed throughout the night, even with all our guests. For the price, we felt like we got incredible value with a space this size and this well-maintained. We'd absolutely recommend Pickering Barn to any couple looking for a beautiful outdoor venue.

    Amazing venue and staff

We had a great experience with this venue the whole day through. Tavi was very friendly and made our experience. Price point is great for what you get. Only thing there isn’t anymore to set up and tear down but they give you contact info if needed. Even then, they tried to accommodate as much as they could. The place is pretty big and location is convenient. Lots of parking space as well. It was beautiful. We loved it all.

Elegant, Beautiful, Clean, and Quality Service

Pickering Barn is an affordable, popular, and beautiful venue for a wedding. The staff are kind, helpful, and prompt in their service and responses to your needs. This is a clear choice for those looking to have a small or 200 person size wedding, and have a creative eye for decorating a wonderful space with a lot of potential. Tavi, one of the venue representatives, was clear, prompt, and flexible with his responses to our questions, in giving tours and instructions, and offering helpful leads and suggestions to make the wedding work to accommodate our particular needs (such as the recommendation of a good heater rental). The day-of representative was gentle and courteous to the Bride and did everything to serve while being mindful that this day was special for the couple and their guests. Three words to describe the venue: Elegant, Clean, and Versatile Three words to describe the service: Prompt, Kind, and Helpful

    Amazing venue!

Pickering Barn was an amazing choice for our wedding reception. From the moment we first reached out, their communication was great - they were quick to respond and incredibly kind throughout the entire planning process. The venue itself is large, clean, and well-maintained, providing a beautiful and versatile space for our celebration. We really appreciated their willingness to let us come see the venue a few days before the reception, as well as the helpful photos and examples they shared of how other couples had set up and decorated the space. When we unfortunately had to change our date due to a family emergency, the team at Pickering Barn made the process incredibly easy. Our reception went off without a hitch, thanks to their professionalism and attention to detail. We would highly recommend Pickering Barn to any couple looking for a stunning, flexible, and stress-free wedding venue.
