I’m Colby (he/him), your local neighborhood dog parent/beer lover/former mascot/barbershop singer/wedding and elopement photographer. My love language is shouting compliments at you. I love people and hate crowds. I prefer long hikes in the mountains to ones on the beach, but both are better than sitting at home. I really, really don’t like having my photo taken - and if we have that in common, we might work really well together.

More than 10 years ago, I started trying to capture the people I love in their element - with their people. My work is joyful, meaningful, and full of energy. My favorite photos feel like they’re alive and moving. They stir something in my chest. They make me feel the sun on my skin.

    Hire this dude!

    Colby photographed a wedding I was in in 2017 and I knew he’d photograph my wedding. This was before I’d even met my now-husband. That’s how good he is. Colby is phenomenal. We originally planned on a full wedding, but pivoted to an elopement and Colby was on board for the new plan. My now husband and I are not the photogenic type - you can’t tell due to Colby’s immense skill. He made us feel comfortable and relaxed and clearly knows his stuff. He got so many beautiful photos of our backyard elopement and downtown lunch afterward. We could not be more pleased with his work.

    We truly cannot say enough good things about Colby Campbell. From the moment we met him at a coffee shop here in Des Moines, Colby had a warm, welcoming presence that instantly made us feel comfortable and at ease. Throughout the entire wedding planning process, he went above and beyond our expectations. He was always attentive, quick to respond, and incredibly helpful during what can be a stressful time! Colby offers a complimentary engagement session, which was such a meaningful bonus, and his dedication to his craft is unmatched. Our final galleries exceeded every expectation. Between his use of film, drone coverage, and multiple camera bodies, he somehow captured every single moment of our day. I still don’t know how one human managed to be everywhere at once! He also kept us on schedule and moving smoothly throughout the day, which made a huge difference. His editing is warm, bright, and clean. I love his eye and the way he captures small moments, often ones that may have gone unnoticed. He has a genuine ability to notice detials and the beauty in passing moments, and it’s remarkable how clearly those memories come through in his work. On top of all of his talent, Colby donates a portion of his work to One Iowa, a queer rights organization in Des Moines, and is a genuine advocate and supporter of all humans. As a queer couples, that meant the world to us. We feel incredibly lucky to have these photos for the rest of our lives and would recommend Colby from the highest of mountains. If you’re considering him as your photographer, know you’ll be in the very best hands.

    I cannot put into words how perfectly Colby Campbell Photography made our special day. It’s best to reach out as soon as you know your wedding date! Dates are tentatively reserved on a first-come, first-served basis as soon as you hit “submit” on that contact form, but it’s not locked in until the contract is signed. If another couple requests your date before you sign the contract, I’ll give you a 72-hour window to lock it in before offering it to them.
When you look at your photos on your 25th anniversary, I want you to feel like you are peeking in on an intimate moment with your partner from a time machine. You don’t get that feeling from a stiff prom pose. Our time together will be active and dynamic: I’ll give you a prompt designed to create a candid moment for me to snap. You can expect a bright, balanced, stylized and timeless exposure.
Hey, I wanna see your beautiful photos just as bad as you do! I usually get a small number of previews sent to you the day after the wedding, depending on travel and other circumstances - so you don't only have phone pictures to post and send to loved ones. The full gallery will arrive in the weeks to come.
I charge the same fees for travel photography as local; the expense of the travel itself is added. I do my best to keep this expense as low as possible, which means it varies by photoshoot. I'll let you know the final cost of travel before booking. Driving-distance travel expenses apply at $0.50 per mile for distance beyond 50 miles outside of my home base in Des Moines, IA.
Couples’ sessions are usually edited and returned no later than two weeks after the shoot date. Wedding galleries are delivered no later than five weeks after the wedding (though I usually can’t resist diving in and pulling out a few of my favorites the next day!). I also offer expedited delivery options of 1 week for wedding galleries or 1 day for couple’s sessions.
Fair question, but unfortunately not. When you hire me, you are putting trust in my eye from start to finish. The way I shoot is intended for a specific editing process, meaning the images straight-out-of-camera are half-finished and as a result might not look right. With that said, I’m always open to a message like “my hair looks a little weird in photo CC-02154, are there any others like it?”
I don’t guarantee a minimum or maximum of photos - I deliver as many photos as turn out from your session! On average, you can expect around 75 final products per shooting hour.
I provide print releases upon request so you can take your digital files to a lab of your choice to print. If you want to skip a few steps, you can order prints directly through my website. I don’t upcharge on these prints at all because I think it’s SUPER important to print your photos.
Absolutely! After our session, you’ll receive a link to an online gallery that will function for at least two years. The gallery will allow you to download full-resolution files from any device. You can also share this link with loved ones so they can pick out their favorites. I encourage you to share your photos on social media, so long as you tag my Instagram or website.
For my protection and my family’s, I will only be taking on clients who have received the COVID-19 vaccine, and weddings where a majority of guests are vaccinated. Additionally, while I may drop it when we’re shooting outdoors, I will remain masked throughout a wedding day.
You’ll have a chance to view the contract before signing. A retainer of 50% is required at signing to lock in your shoot/wedding date, with the remaining balance to be paid on any payment schedule up to a month before the shoot/wedding date. I accept payment by Venmo, credit card, and old-fashioned paper check.
