Women and Asian-owned for 20 years, it is a true family business – led by mother and daughter team Kim and Hannah. It began in 1994 with a dream. Ira Gutner packed his bags, left a successful career in New York City’s Garment District and moved upstate to open Samuel’s of Rhinebeck, a boutique candy and coffee shop in the heart of bucolic Dutchess County. Ira named his shop after his late Uncle Sam who introduced him as a boy to penny candy. I began working for Ira as a 15-year-old after school and diligently worked my way up to store manager. Ira’s sudden passing in April 2014 left all of us in the community stunned and heartbroken.

Sugar Monster is an award winning, concierge cake studio owned by Pastry Chef Ashley Holt. Ashley has won prestigious honors in her field and is currently working as the Senior Food Stylist at the TODAY Show. She has been in the cake industry for 10 years and puts incredible attention to detail in each of her designs. Her availability is limited and she is very selective with the orders she currently takes.
