Build a Home that Shows Who You are as a Couple: Tips from #ZolaCouple Maddie and David

This #ZolaCouple says planning a wedding is all about working together and building a registry is all about embracing the chance to make your home uniquely yours.  Maddie and David met on a rafting trip and got engaged near a pumpkin patch. While they are tying to knot in less than two weeks, they still took the time to dish on all the wedding planning and registry advice they have for other couples.

How did you meet?
We initially met on a group rafting trip down the Chattahoochee River in Atlanta, GA. It was the summer after my freshman year at Denison University and David had just finished his senior year at Georgia Tech. We up on the same raft and actually didn’t speak to each other the entire time. There was a lot of mutual staring going on. We ended up meeting again at a bar about 6 months later and we immediately clicked.

How did you get engaged?
It was this past Fall in October 2014. We had a full day planned going to a pumpkin patch, watching terrible horror movies with friends, carving pumpkins, drinking cider, etc. I was super pumped about it because I love all things Fall. When we got to the pumpkin patch, David steered me away from it and off towards a little clearing in the woods under the guise that we should “explore the property.” I was massively confused until we walked right up to a pond with pumpkins spelling out “WILL YOU MARRY ME?” Then he got down on one knee and I immediately cried.

What was the first thing you did after you got engaged?
We drove straight from the pumpkin patch to my parents’  house for a glass of champagne before going out to dinner.

Any tips for balancing your wedding planning with your everyday busy life?
Work together! The wedding isn’t all about the bride; the groom should have a say and his own fair share of the work as well. David and I have worked hard to tag team every task and to divide and conquer, and it’s made it so much more manageable. Also, hiring a wedding planner was some of the best money I’ve ever spent.

Tell us about your first date
I guess our first REAL date was probably taking a trip to Savannah, GA together for David’s family reunion on St. Patrick’s Day. I was introduced to almost all of one side of his family, but somehow it wasn’t even a little bit overwhelming. I felt welcomed and comfortable immediately and everyone gave me huge hugs. We spent the day walking around Savannah together and watching the St. Patrick’s Day parade before passing out on an air mattress that slowly deflated throughout the night. We ended up waking up in an inflatable taco, smooshed together in the center of the mattress because of all the air that had escaped in the middle.

Ideal night in?
Lots of couch time, watching a Netflix documentary or It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia, and ordering in Chinese food.

Ideal night out?
Good food and good wine, preferably with friends!

Best date you two have been on?
It’s a two-way tie. We visited Calistoga, CA in Napa Valley last year, and we went to the Calistoga Inn for brunch (and morning wine). The weather was absolutely gorgeous – it was sunny and breezy, and the wine was the best we’ve ever tasted and the food was delicious.
We also went to Shakespeare’s Tavern for Valentine’s Day this year to see Romeo & Juliet, which was such a cool experience for an English nerd like me. The food wasn’t bad either!

Favorite way to relax together?
Going for a run or walk, or just working out together. That’s if we’re not on the couch watching Netflix or hanging out with friends.

What are you most excited about on your registry?
We had a discussion about this last night and settled on the Nordic Ware Egg Poacher / Omlet Pan. I love Eggs Benedict for breakfast, and David eats more eggs than any other human I know. We would probably use it every single day!

Any registry advice for other couples?
Stay organized, don’t be afraid of a little color, and don’t forget that this is your chance to build a uniquely beautiful home that shows who you are as a couple!
