An East Village Dinner to a Proposal in Mexico: #ZolaCouple Lisa and Nick

For this #ZolaCouple, a small restaurant in the East Village of New York City is the center of happiness. From a chance meeting that lead to them being set up, to the best birthday celebration years later, their romance has a beautiful symmetry we can all be inspired by.

How did you meet?
Lisa: I was at a late dinner with friends in the East Village (NYC) at a restaurant called Graffiti. It’s a cozy, hole-in the-wall with communal tables and one of my friends, Ara, knew the couple that was sitting literally across from us, Josh and Ali. By the end of the night, Josh and Ali had texted their friend, Nick, that the two of us should meet. Two days later Nick texted me and asked if I wanted to get together… and here we are. Thank you Ara, Josh and Ali!!

How did you get engaged?
Nick: After some careful planning and some nervous travel with the ring, I decided to propose on our vacation in Mexico. I decided that the concert festival that we went to at the beginning of the week was probably not the right setting ha, so I chose the second to last night we were there in the amazing cabana and pool area. I had about 15 or so pictures from some of our favorite times together spread out in the cabana and some of our favorite music playing. I asked her to guess the location and date of each photo and then turned them over for her. On the back of one of our first pictures together I had written the big question and luckily she said ‘yes’!

What was the first thing you did after you got engaged?
Lisa: We called and FaceTimed our families and then went on a private dinner cruise that Nick had arranged where the chef created an amazing Thai dinner for us. It was the perfect way to celebrate our engagement – romantic, beautiful, and delicious!

Best party you’ve hosted?
Lisa: For my birthday last year we went back to Graffiti where I met the couple that introduced me to Nick. He rented the private dining space, invited our closest friends and worked with the Chef (Jehangir Mehta) to create a bespoke menu based on my favorite foods, scents, and travel spots. Chef Mehta explained each course to our guests and throughout dinner and we listened to a playlist that Nick and I created together.

Go-to recipe for dinner parties?
Lisa: I found a really simple grilled halloumi recipe with balsamic strawberries and mint that always gets rave reviews.

Favorite meal to cook for two?
Lisa: We’re both half Italian and really love a good pasta (our shared guilty pleasure). Trying a new pasta recipe, sharing a great bottle of wine, and finishing it off with some sort of dark chocolate makes for a pretty great night.

What are you most excited for on your registry?
Nick: All of it really, but a few items that I picked out were the Cuisinart Private Reserve Wine Cellar and the Rosanna Kashmir Highball Glass, Set of 4… anything that we can use for parties and to celebrate with friends.

Any tips for balancing wedding planning with your everyday busy life?
Lisa: We keep lots of to do lists and give ourselves deadlines. We don’t meet them every time, but it keeps us on track.

Thanks for chatting Lisa & Nick! See some of our favorites from their registry below and make sure to check out their entire selection here.
