The holidays can be a mix of emotions for couples all over the world. For new couples, the stress to impress may be even greater. We surveyed over 650 engaged and just-married Zola couples to hear how they are spending the holidays this year. When we asked how couples felt about spending the holidays with their in-laws, more than half said they love their in-laws as much as their own parents! To our surprise, only 4% of all couples said they need to have an emergency exit strategy in place. Not bad, not bad.

Regardless if you get along well with the ‘rents or not, we’ve gathered a few noteworthy tips to help you master holidays with the in-laws this season!

Don’t Arrive Empty-Handed

Bring your favorite dish, a small gift, or a bottle of wine to show your appreciation! Even better, consider gifting them with a one-month wine subscription from Winc. It’s the thought that counts!

Ask Questions

Asking questions is one of the best ways to show you’re interested and to learn more about your S.O.’s roots. Your fiancé’s mom is in a book club? Ask her about it. The dad plays on a bowling league? Find out who’s in the lead! Get to know the parents and start to bond, so you have more to talk about at future gatherings.

Offer a Helping Hand

Always see if there is something you can do to help. Whether it’s loading or unloading the dishwasher or setting the table for a big dinner, jump right in! It will not go unnoticed.
