Originally opened in 1916 as a 1,000-seat movie palace, The Castle Theatre was Bloomington’s crown jewel, built by the legendary Balaban & Katz. For decades, it served as a premier destination for film and entertainment, shaping the city’s cultural identity. After years of dormancy, The Castle has been beautifully restored with a $1.5 million renovation and now plays a central role in Bloomington’s thriving Cultural District. This revitalized venue blends rich history with modern versatility, hosting live music, corporate gatherings, and private celebrations. As the downtown district experiences a cultural renaissance, The Castle remains a beloved landmark—once again a stage for dreamers, artists, and unforgettable moments.

The Castle Theatre

Immediately upon entering the main performing area, visitors are reminded of the days when no expense was spared in building a theater.

Rich in architectural details such as gilded columns, ornate friezes and art deco-inspired chandeliers, the Castle is the perfect link between Bloomington’s past, present and future. Today, the entire venue is designed to provide the best experience for patrons and performers alike. With removable seats on the venue’s main floor and fixed seating along the upper balcony, the Castle can host audiences ranging from 300 to 700 or more, depending on configuration and event requirements. The main venue area can accommodate comfortable seating and has excellent sightlines, backed by state-of-the-art sound and lighting systems. Located on each side of the main floor are two bars, ready to serve a classic selection of beverages. The venue is supported by an efficient and experienced hospitality, house and backstage staff, complete with security, ticketing, and technical support. This combination has turned the Castle into the most exciting live music venue between St Louis, Chicago and Indianapolis.

There are a variety of bar options available for your rental, from cash bar to pre-paid bar packages. Your event coordinator can help you pick the option that's best for your event.
Outside food and catering are both permitted and encouraged. We have wonderful recommendations if needed.
We have uplighting that can dramatically change the color of the room or stage to your particular choice. We can even light the outside of the building above our vintage marquee.
Again, the options are limitless. As a professional concert venue, you can be assured that our sound system and engineers are top-of-the-line. This means, if you are interested in bringing in a live band or music, we have all the right tools to make it sound spectacular. If your needs aren't quite so elaborate, and a personal playlist will do, we are ready to assist in that effort as well!
The room setup can vary depending on your preference. We have access to round and rectangular tables, as well as smaller cocktail tables. Need more space? Seating for 74+ is available in our cozy balcony as well. We always provide the option for the ceremony and reception changeover.
Away from the crowds, our Castle Green Room space offers a full bathroom, ready for your day-of needs. Your bridal party will love using it as a ready-room and/or private hang-out for the entire wedding party. Be sure to look for the signatures of your favorite band or artist! Signing the walls of the Green Room has been a Castle Theatre tradition since our doors opened in 2010.
Our guests find this to be such a unique and exciting feature of our venue. Where else can you and your guests literally see your names in lights? This makes for one of our favorite photo opportunities of the night. When booking the venue, we provide the option to set up a "Save The Date" marquee message.
Our coordinator personally works with each couple from contract signing all the way through your big day/night. On the day of the event, she can help coordinate both the vendors and your family/friends to help make your day goes as smoothly as possible.
