The State Theatre, located at 609 Congress Street in the heart of Portland, Maine’s Arts District was originally built as a first-run movie house in 1929. The historic building recently underwent a multi-million dollar renovation to restore its glory. The bi-level venue has an ornate period lobby, amazing sight-lines from any seat in the house and ample green rooms. Flexible seating plans, comfortable bar areas and a renovated kitchen make the State Theatre an excellent choice for a wide range of events. From weddings, receptions & private special celebrations, the State Theatre can easily transform for a wide range of events! Outside alochol is not permitted due to state licensing rules. Our professional bar team will assist in setting your perfect bar!
Yes, all our facilities are wheelchair accessible. We also have ramps at the main and side entrances and trained staff.
Your reservation includes 10 hours from start to finish, including the time it takes our staff to set up and clean up. Most events are between 3-6 hours. Any additional time will be billed at $200 per hour.
11 min (3.5 miles) via Congress St is fastest route, despite the usual traffic (no tolls or highway travel).
While our venue is fully insured, wedding renters will need to obtain Event Host Liability Insurance. This is a simple process and our event coordinators, Tiny Laser Maine, are happy to give guidance. Ensuring that we have adequate coverage for the event is crucial to mitigate any potential risks or unforeseen circumstances. Therefore, we kindly request that you acquire insurance to safeguard both our interests and those attending the event. Having this coverage in place not only provides peace of mind but also demonstrates our commitment to ensuring a safe and secure environment for all participants.
Booking fees for our facilities, and all payments made including deposits, are non-refundable. If you cancel your event within 40 days of your booked date, we’ll bill you the full amount of all estimated charges. Deposits are date transferable!

While the venue does not have parking, we do secure two paid full-day spots for both the bride and groom as part of the package. We can add spots for immediate family for $50 per spot. There is a large parking gargage located on High Street conveniently located across from the venue! On-street parking is free after 6pm daily and all day Sunday.

Yes! If you are hiring a full-band, we will add on our professional venue staffing to assist and ensure the sound, lighting and performance are flawless. DJ's are welcome to use the stage as well but typically no not require production assistance.
