How much does hair and makeup cost for a wedding?

According to Thumbtack, wedding makeup artists cost $90–$475 per person on average in 2022. Here at Zola, we recommend putting aside around $300 for your own wedding hair and makeup. Services for wedding party members are generally less expensive, as the artist or stylist will spend less time perfecting the look. Be sure to have a transparent conversation with your wedding party if you expect them to cover their own costs.

How long does wedding hair and makeup take to do?

The more involved the look, the more time it will take. In general, allocate 60–90 minutes for your own looks and 30–45 minutes for each member of the wedding party. Extensions, extra thick hair, and intricate makeup all take longer. Communicating who (with pictures and descriptions) is getting what (again, with photos) to your stylists will help them plan an accurate timeline.

Who usually pays for hair and makeup for the wedding party?

Traditionally, whoever is asking for the services should pay. However, this may not be in the budget for every couple. If you’re planning on having your wedding party pay, be transparent when you first ask them to be in the wedding party itself. Then, they can choose whether it’s possible for them to participate.

A good rule of thumb is to tip 15–20%.

“Emily and her team were amazing! I did a lot of research before booking hair and makeup for my big day and came across Beauty by Emily and couldn’t have booked with her sooner! Starting at my trial, she made me so comfortable and even sent a prep sheet on how to best prep for this. She listened very intently to what I was saying I wanted and took the time to go through inspo photos I had saved to pick apart what I liked and disliked. After the trial, she was communicative leading up to the wedding day. On wedding day, she was very adaptable, as we had a small space to set up in and the room got very warm. They worked promptly to get my bridesmaids, myself, my mom and mother in law all pretty for the day of. Everyone’s hair and makeup lasted throughout the wind and the tears of the day. I felt extremely beautiful thanks to Emily and her team. She even included a bridal touch up kit which was so nice to have to refresh throughout the evening! Emily is amazing and so sweet and so communicative, I definitely recommend to anyone booking her!!”

“Kiss This Makeup did a WONDERFUL job with my wedding hair and makeup, as well as hair and makeup for my wedding party. I have very fine, straight hair that has a difficult time holding a curl, but Jenna Marie was so open-minded and willing to work with me on finding solutions that would work well for me. My hair help up for the entire wedding (including through Hurricane Helene!!) and was so beautiful. I was unsure what I was looking for as my hairstyle, but Jenna helped me narrow down my options and advised based on my face shape, dress, and overall vibe of the wedding. My makeup was so beautiful, and didn't irritate my sensitive skin at all and left me with no breakouts! It lasted the entire day and looks beautiful in my photographs. Jenna and Nicole also did the hair and makeup of my wedding party, and everyone was in love with their looks, and looked great the whole day. KTM was very flexible when I last minute had a family member ask if they could get their makeup done, and the team was able to adjust the schedule to accommodate her. Additionally, we have many LGBTQ members of our wedding party, and KTM was nothing but lovely and welcoming to all. They really went above and beyond, and I have never felt so beautiful in my whole life. I will never forget how special and stunning KTM made me feel for the entire getting-ready process, and how well-organized they were, which left me feeling no stress about how the getting-ready part of the day would go, and also feeling confident that everyone would look great throughout the entire event. “My glam team was Monique and Michelle. They were amazing! It was great to get to meet them and work with them. We did a trial run and it was just beautiful and they accepted and wanted feedback from the trial. They asked for inspiration pictures and were able to achieve the look I was thinking of. As someone with naturally curly hair, looking for a hair stylist that understands and can make my hair look good was something important for me. Prior to wedding day, they asked for inspiration pictures from the bridesmaids. There were 7 girls getting hair and makeup or just one service. The stylist had schedules and we were able to have everyone done in time. We had a great morning with Michelle and Monique and we all looked so great all day long. The airbrush makeup is in fact cry proof. So glad to have found a glam team that was understanding, fun, professional, and amazing !”

“I can’t say enough great things about Amber. From the get-go, she was so warm, welcoming and so very kind. Through email communication to our first trial, it felt so natural and fun and I felt like we clicked immediately. Our trial was fun and she made me feel very comfortable to express things that I liked, didn’t like, or things I may not have been comfortable with. I made a last minute color pallet change from our trial to wedding day and she was on board ready to go. My nerves were so high the day and she was able to pull me out of my anxiety and nervousness and allowed me to take any space or simply acted as a really wonderful sounding board as I was expressing any of my insecurities.
