My experience is unique. I grew up with my white family very cognizant of inequality that existed in the world and the importance of experiencing the outdoors. But there was still much they could never understand. My grandfather, Cherokee, Black, + Blackfeet, would always bring me into the garden with him. I learned how to appreciate our connection to the Earth, the ancient connection our people have, and how that connection had been broken, being stripped from their land.
