How much does hair and makeup cost for a wedding?

According to Thumbtack, wedding makeup artists cost $90–$475 per person on average in 2022. Here at Zola, we recommend putting aside around $300 for your own wedding hair and makeup. Services for wedding party members are generally less expensive, as the artist or stylist will spend less time perfecting the look. Be sure to have a transparent conversation with your wedding party if you expect them to cover their own costs.

How long does wedding hair and makeup take to do?

The more involved the look, the more time it will take. In general, allocate 60–90 minutes for your own looks and 30–45 minutes for each member of the wedding party. Extensions, extra thick hair, and intricate makeup all take longer. Communicating who (with pictures and descriptions) is getting what (again, with photos) to your stylists will help them plan an accurate timeline.

Who usually pays for hair and makeup for the wedding party?

Traditionally, whoever is asking for the services should pay. However, this may not be in the budget for every couple. If you’re planning on having your wedding party pay, be transparent when you first ask them to be in the wedding party itself. Then, they can choose whether it’s possible for them to participate.

How much should we tip for our wedding hair and makeup artists?

A good rule of thumb is to tip 15–20%.

“Emily and her team were amazing! I did a lot of research before booking hair and makeup for my big day and came across Beauty by Emily and couldn’t have booked with her sooner! Starting at my trial, she made me so comfortable and even sent a prep sheet on how to best prep for this. She listened very intently to what I was saying I wanted and took the time to go through inspo photos I had saved to pick apart what I liked and disliked. After the trial, she was communicative leading up to the wedding day. On wedding day, she was very adaptable, as we had a small space to set up in and the room got very warm. They worked promptly to get my bridesmaids, myself, my mom and mother in law all pretty for the day of. Everyone’s hair and makeup lasted throughout the wind and the tears of the day. I felt extremely beautiful thanks to Emily and her team. She even included a bridal touch up kit which was so nice to have to refresh throughout the evening! Emily is amazing and so sweet and so communicative, I definitely recommend to anyone booking her!!”

I included my daughter, nieces and close friends for hair and make up services and found Jenna and her team amazing in how they managed multiple needs for multiple individuals and kept us on schedule. Everyone looked absolutely beautiful from ages ranging from 16 to 55. I also opted for the bridal valet service, which I can’t recommend highly enough. With that service, Jenna stayed with me through the beginning of the reception to help straightening the train, holding flowers during pictures, touching up my make up, and overall keeping me calm, cool and collected. “I used One Salon & Bridal for my wedding day hair and make up for me and 15 others! Everybody at One Salon & Bridal was extremely helpful and communicative!! From day 1, I felt like I was in good hands for my wedding hair and make up. The team was willing to make things work - however I needed them to work! For example, we didn't know at first if we would get ready at the salon or my venue but I was able to talk things out with Michelle and we came up with an action plan to get everybody ready in time! I was able to have a few of our close family members get hair and make up done with us, because the salon had all hands on deck for my wedding day! From the start, her communication had all the details I needed and she followed up with me when needed to schedule my trial and get any necessary details for the day of. And I believe her prices are very fair and reasonable! I only used hair styling services since for my wedding. I showed Ann a few inspiration pictures, and at the trial she absolutely exceeded my expectations!! I couldn’t stop looking at the pictures leading up to my wedding. The day of, Ann showed up on time, set up quickly, and was clear about any other items she needed. She stuck to our timeline and gave ever girl the look they asked for flawlessly. With a couple of tweaks like adding in my hair clips, Ann once again exceeded my vision and created a definite conversation piece for the night! It was exactly the look I was picturing and more, I got so many compliments and my flower girls thought I was a Disney Princess. Which I call a win!
