About Nancy: A fashion photographer with a studio in downtown Chicago and a degree from the Art Institute, Nancy fell in love and refused to move to New York to pursue a career. Instead, she opened two flower shops in downtown Chicago: one in the Congress Hotel, the other in Institute Place, focusing her artistic eye on creating beautiful floral designs. The economy changed. She closed the shops. And for the past fourteen years, she worked in the restaurant industry – first as part of the opening team for Chicago’s House of Blues, and then as an executive with Rosebud Restaurants. But she always kept her hands in floral design, doing private parties, dinners and seasonal decorating for clients on the Chicago’s Gold Coast and North Shore.Four years ago, she realized she needed to open another flower shop.

I always loved flowers growing up but never really gave that part of myself attention as it is not something encouraged for little boys in Grove Hill, Alabama. But love, it’ll change you! It’ll cause you to break past your self-made boundaries and grow. I met Kari Starks and we started dating in 2013. She loved flowers - specifically, yellow tulips. She became my reason to purchase flowers. We got married in 2016 and she then became my reason to arrange flowers. In 2017, I grew bold enough to share an arrangement on Instagram. And I’ve been designing ever since then. Planks & Pistils has flourished because of her love and support.
