Charming, rustic, sweet, romantic – these are words used to describe Big Sur Bakery. The whimsy runs deep in the history of the space; perched upon a succulent covered slice of heaven in the heart of Sur Country. It all started with Alice Jaeger - the legend at the heart of the our story. In 1929, while the Pacific Coast Highway was under initial construction, Alice began plans for a homestead haven to offer travelers a place to rest & refuel. Alice planted cacti & succulents by hand throughout the land. With her husband, Steve, a ranch-style home was built in 1936. It later became a diner + tiny inn; a gathering place for locals and wanderers to rest, refuel, and nourish with a homegrown meal. That ranch-home is what we call Big Sur Bakery today. We're honored to carry on the traditions. The unique charm of Big Sur Bakery is built into the walls & windows through the tales of every single love story that has graced our sweet little rest-stop-meets-bakeshop we call home.
