#ZolaCouple Tara & Gerald lived on the same block for just shy of a decade before actually meeting. Though they exchanged glances while Tara was out walking her dog or both were at the gym, it wasn’t until Gerald mustered up the courage to talk to Tara that they finally connected. As Tara said, “it only took a decade.” Better late than never! Get to know this NYC couple as they count down the week left to their wedding and see what they put on their awesome registry.
How did you get engaged? We got engaged in Bora Bora. On a misty day midway through the trip, Gerald surprised me with a proposal as I was overlooking Mount Pahia and Otemanu from their bungalow.
What was the first thing you did after you got engaged? We jumped off our dock and went for a swim in the lagoon.
Any tips for balancing wedding planning with your everyday busy life? Make a list with responsibilities and timelines early on after you get engaged. And then get going! It will inevitably be stressful so embrace it and remember why you are getting married. Marriage is a joyous occasion.
Tips on decorating when you have people over? We try to appeal to people’s senses. Plush pillows and throws on couches. A scented candle burning or something delicious cooking. Reggae or jazz playing in the background. Soft lighting – never too bright or overbearing. And just generally, keeping everything pretty simple and seasonal.
Favorite thing to serve to guests when you host? Gerald’s mom gave us a smoker as a housewarming present. Slow hot smoked salmon is probably the most frequent and popular dish that we have served guests. We marinate the salmon in maple syrup, Dijon mustard, olive oil, garlic, parsley and salt and pepper. Then we smoke the salmon for 4 to 5 hours at a low heat with hickory wood chips.
Favorite meal to cook for two? Me: Italian wedding soup with Sauvignon Blanc. Gerald: Rib eye steak, potato and parsnip mash with Malbec. This also happens to be the only thing Gerald can cook.
How do you two relax together? Long walks. Either through the woods or on Flying Point Beach during the evenings or off season when it is empty. Our dog Brewster, a King Charles Cavalier Spaniel, is a big fan as well.
What are you most excited for about newlywed life? Not planning for a destination wedding, enjoying some alone time together, and starting a family.
What are you most excited for on your registry? Generally anything related to cooking or hosting, as we adjust to life as homeowners. I’m most excited for the china. We chose this set because it will complement our home nicely: floral, stylish and formal but not stuffy. Gerald is most excited for the Vitamix blender, which will get plenty of use creating elaborate post-gym shakes.
Any last tips on registering? Don’t worry about fulfilling some pre-conceived, cookie cutter checklist, but instead select items that you want and will actually use. The result will be a much more customized registry that represents your personality and interests. That’s why we liked Zola. It offered a ton of flexibility, wide variety of products and unique registry ideas.
