About DeGroot Film Co.

DeGroot Film Co.

Photographer & Videographer

WE ARE KATIE & DEVIN. We're in love & we shoot other people in love. It's hard to call just one place home. We're born and raised in Wisconsin, but there are pieces of our hearts in both Colorado and California, the two places where we have traveled the most together. We specialize in couples who are madly in love and who have a sense of humor. We prefer to tell your story, rather than make another generic love story. We want to capture raw emotions. We want you to giggle and we want you to dance.

We will travel just about anywhere your heart desires. We have a photo + video elopement package that couples love! We find that we connect most with our adventure couples, since we can bond over traveling and the desire to leave your mark in all areas of the world, while gaining experiences that fulfill you in a way that's so indescribable.

As the Mother of the Bride the first thing that appalled me upon meeting the photographer, Katie, was the unprofessional attire worn by the photographer and her assistant. A crop top and jogger bottoms with sneakers is NOT what I consider Professional attire to a wedding as a Professional Photographer. The assistant was only slightly better dressed but not by much. Only thing is that she wasn't showing her midriff throughout the afternoon/evening. The second thing was the not very friendly manner in which my husband and I were greeted. The assistant was friendlier. We were shocked to learn that the Photographer "Devin" was not there and was NOT coming because he only does videography. News to the Parents of the Bride AND to the Bride!! It was downhill from there. Terrible first impression. Of course we were going to download the photos; we've got to have something to show for the thousands of dollars we paid these unprofessional people, even if it isn't all what our daughter wanted on her special day. We don't get a do over. And apparently not even an apology. I would not have allowed the Bride or Groom to tip this photographer. By the time I caught up with them it was too late, they had already done so. Not deserved and no way to get a refund unless we take them to court. DO NOT USE THE DEGROOTS!

    Very Disappointed

I would not go with Degroot Film Co. again. Let me explain why from the beginning. My wife and I were looking for photographers for our wedding and came across Degroot online. Looking on their Instagram page we loved the style of photos they did, the emotion they captured and warmth. We reached out and they were quick and responsive to us. We felt good about them and decided to book the standard wedding package with no videography. With that package includes a free complementary engagement session. We get closer and do the engagement session and things were great! Katie was very directive and told us how to pose. We were thinking that’s perfect as we don’t really know how to pose and make the photos look natural. We received the photos and they truly were like the rest of their work we had seen! We were also thinking that’s how our wedding day will be. We get to our wedding and that’s when things took a turn for the worst. The first problem was they showed up about 15 minutes late. Second we found out that Devin was not there as he only does the videography. Not once is that mentioned anywhere on their website or the packet they give you. We were thinking Katie would have been with the girls and Devin would have been with the guys, that was not the case. Third we were provided a document from them to tell what photos we wanted the day of the wedding and had space to provide detail about them, which we did. Come the wedding day, this was followed very poorly. So poorly that Katie said she’s not sure what that means or really what to do. If that was the case, I would have hoped she read the document before to ensure we all were on the same page. Katie was not taking charge and not directing how she was for the engagement session. It felt like to us she didn’t really care for our wedding and was just going through the motions. It seemed like her mind was elsewhere, more so on her new home in California, since they moved there after booking them. They should not let their home life or travel interfere with the work, and unfortunately it did for our wedding. We received our wedding photos and out of the 962 photos that were captured, we only truly loved about 50. Unfortunately all of our family portraits look awkward and we were not told how to pose. We wanted to have sitting and standing family portraits but this was scrapped amongst other things for time sake. Maybe having different poses at least would have helped for these photos now looking back and now realizing how stiff we were. The first dance photos are not very focused on us and don’t capture the moment we envisioned and saw in their previous work. Our friends and family took more photos on their phones and utilized more of the beautiful venue which we will be printing more of than Degroot’s. For the price we paid it’s truly sad the outcome we have here. Maybe it would be better to have had a zoom call or even a phone call to get to know Degroot better. All our other vendors made it so we could talk whether zoom, in person, or a phone call, details and logistics. All in all Katie’s heart and soul was not in it on our wedding day and the photos show. We would not recommend them to any of our friends or family.

Ryan & Mattie, I am so beyond sorry that you feel this way and that you are so disappointed. On the wedding day, you loved all of the photos you saw. At the end of the night, you sent us home with a gratuity, which was so appreciated. You loved the sneak peeks. I have always been available for phone calls, you never asked. I ask all our couples’ multiple times throughout the planning process and in person at sessions to let me know if you have any questions or need any help with planning the timeline, etc. It’s not hidden that Devin primarily does video. When we do photo only or photo/video, we have our 2nd shooters/associates with us. The personal comments regarding our move to California (a year ago) and me not being focused are completely unnecessary and not true. On our phone call you said you made these assumptions based on an Instagram story you saw about me missing my kids. We have been traveling for weddings for 13 years and in business for 15. Our travel and home life doesn't interfere with wedding days. This was a personal attack that doesn’t involve your wedding whatsoever. I was with/by you guys all day long ready and prepared to take any photos of moments that were happening as well as moments you requested. You provided a 3 page, extremely detailed shot list, that I put into a timeline and worked with you all day long to check off specific images. Again, to say I was confused or didn’t know what to do is false. I mentioned to you in an email in February that my 2nd shooter would be there with me checking off your images in your shot list (not Devin). I have documented times in my mileage app of when I arrived at your wedding, early. I directed you through getting ready, bridal party, couples’ photos and family photos, as I do at every wedding. I delivered even more photos than our contract states we will. You immediately downloaded the entire gallery and then Mattie downloaded over 340 images individually, and more since. Your timeline had us going from the girls to the guys and back so that’s what we followed. There was never a request to do sitting family photos (which you admitted to on the phone call), and we posed your family as we always do for our couples. There was also time after the family photos, pre ceremony, to continue taking photos if you wanted to, but you said you were happy with what we captured. Regarding your first dance photos, you are (quite literally) the only thing in focus. On our phone call it became clear that you only wanted close up photos with nothing else in the background. We provided both close up and wide shots, as we do for all of our couples. I am always able to provide full galleries for couples interested in booking to show a well-rounded look at what we provide. Again, I’m heartbroken that you feel this way and even more distraught that you never expressed any of this to me or tried to have any conversations. I pride myself in my communication and I’m available in the planning process and throughout their wedding day. For you to have such a drastically different experience is disappointing for me as well. I thought that things went amazing and that you were so happy, given the communication we had throughout. On our phone call, we discussed that the concerns you raised appeared to stem from a combination of your limited experience with weddings, not knowing which questions to ask throughout the process, and having very specific preferences and expectations regarding your photos.

    You must hire Degroot Film!

I would hire Degroot Film again and again. We had such a great experience with Katie & Devin for our wedding. They were responsive, had fair prices, and took the most beautiful photos. The quality of their work is top notch. I highly recommend Degroot Film for any type of photoshoot, but especially for weddings. You will not be disappointed!

    Wonderfully Amazing

Couldn’t recommend Katie + Devin DeGroot enough. My fiance (now husband) surprised me and found Katie to shoot our surprise engagement and the photos captured how we were feeling and the excitement of our whole family. She was so professional (and hid in plain site so well!), we knew it was a no-brainer to ask her to shoot our engagement + wedding. We aren’t used to having our photo taken but Katie made us feel comfortable and went with the flow, even when our dog was being crazy :) Leading up to the wedding, the communication from the DeGroot team was clear and friendly. The online portal was easy to navigate with our invoices, contracts, and even Questionnaires that allowed us to organize which photos we wanted / where, etc. Due to COVID, we had to adjust our wedding twice: once with moving the date and once with the location to an entirely different city. I was fearful to tell our vendors but Katie couldn't have handled the switch any better than she did. This put us at ease and gave us one less thing to worry about. She worked with our Wedding Coordinator to finalize details, times, etc.. Day of, Katie + Devin were a dream team. Working with so many personalities of our friends and family is no easy feat but they worked as if they could read my mind. Their associate was professional and a great sport, working in the cold November air to shoot photos after the ceremony! They knew when /where to be and how to capture the day flawlessly and were a great team to work with! Thank you, thank you, thank you DeGroot team! 110% recommended!

Typically, couples book me about 13 months before their wedding date. I encourage you to reach out as soon as possible about my availability, even if you’re planning on a shorter time frame.
Definitely. All final images will be edited for color, saturation, exposure, and sharpness to ensure they look beautiful. I also offer retouching services like blemish removal and teeth whitening for an additional charge.
I do! Just let me know if your venue requires a certificate of liability, and I’ll send that over to them.
Yes we do!
You can expect about 50 to 100 images per hour of photographing. But keep in mind this estimate varies depending on your wedding package, number of guests, venue type, and other factors.
