About this venue

After being blacklisted during the McCarthy Era, Will Geer & his wife, fellow actress, Herta Ware, established Theatricum Botanicum in Topanga, California providing a safe haven for other blacklisted artists such as Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger. Supported by his botany background, the theatre thrived alongside a garden, sustaining the family. Geer's resurgence came with playing Grandpa Zebulon "Zeb" Walton in "The Waltons," leading to the formation of a non-profit theatre. Theatricum evolved into a professional repertory company, offering Shakespeare performances and concerts. Ellen Geer now leads the theatre, known internationally for its Shakespearean interpretations. With year-round classes, concerts, and outreach programs, Theatricum aims to nurture theatre enthusiasts in the Greater Los Angeles Metro area, carrying on Geer's legacy.

    Absolutely spectacular location

The Botanicum was a beautiful location for a weddimg ceremony. Ours was in late fall, and took place on the main stage. This provided a huge stage for the ceremony itself, a convenient amphitheater style seating for the guests, and a well hidden private backstage area with room for seating and mirrors for many people to change, final hairstyling, and so on. The Botanicum was equipped with speaker systems for our music during the ceremony itself, controlled by a professional from the Botanicum for a small extra cost. They were also able to provide certain extra props and items like large carpets and theater chests and chairs to use as we liked. For the reception the space was also fantastic, which as evening came is lit by series of fairy lights across the tables and become very elegant and atmospheric. The botanicum itself was extremely helpful and had a lot of advice on how best to arrange things and provided a lot of options and ideas on the whole ceremony. The overall cost was a fraction of some other weddings we've been to at far simpler looking locations.

DIY venue full of theatre magic!

This is a truly special place run by special people. From beginning to end, they were so helpful, willing to answer all my questions and work with me and my vendors to create a magical day. We got married on the stage, which was so gorgeous, and had our reception in the garden. Our guests absolutely gushed about how unique and meaningful everything was (we're both actors and Shakespeare nerds!). The pictures are beautiful - we got married in mid-May and the whole venue was bursting with flowers! Despite being outdoors, there weren't as many bugs as you'd think, and the temperature was perfect. I worried about it being too dark after sunset, but between the string lights and dance floor lights, that was no problem. Things to keep in mind - it's very DIY, so you'll need to bring everything in, including linens, catering, dinnerware, glassware, etc. Music has to stop at 10pm (local noise ordinance) and everyone must be out by 11, which was perfect for us since we're not late night partiers. Tell your guests to bring a jacket since it gets a little chilly at night (we rented propane heaters). Cell phone service can be sketchy but there is wi-fi on property. The bathrooms aren't hotel fancy, but perfectly fine and clean. There are plenty of outlets at useful places. I'm so glad I got married here - it was a perfect day and I couldn't imagine my wedding anywhere else!
