  • Beautiful Venue, But can be better

While The Empress Estate is a beautiful setting, our experience was unfortunately marred by significant food service errors, frustrating logistical constraints, and a persistent feeling of being nickel-and-dimed at every turn. Food: Deception and Major Errors Our primary issues began with the food. At our paid tasting, the dishes were underwhelming. We later discovered a potential reason why: my in-laws found empty, store-bought cake mix boxes (including Betty Crocker and Great Value) on the premises, which was shocking for a venue claiming to have a professional chef. On our wedding day, the meal was mediocre, and more importantly, our confirmed Banquet Event Order (BEO) was incorrect. Wrong Entrée: We ordered Tuscan Chicken specifically because it does not contain mushrooms. We were served Chicken Marsala instead, which has mushrooms and was not what we ordered. Wrong Cake: We had multiple conversations confirming our choice of Earl Grey cake. We were served Champagne cake and were only told after the wedding that our choice was "out of season"—a critical detail that was never communicated to us beforehand. To make matters worse, when we contacted the venue about these errors, they refused to take any accountability. They were adamant the chef had followed the menu and even recalled a previous email where they admitted to the changes. This disappointing and dishonest response only compounded our frustration. The "All-Inclusive" Package: Hidden Costs & Frustrations The venue's rigid policies and constant upsells created a stressful, rushed experience. Strict Timeline: The rigid 3pm-10pm timeframe is non-negotiable without a 500 fee. This rushed our setup and forced our reception to end by 9:10 PM to meet the 10 PM cleanup deadline. Mandatory Fees: Be prepared for a non-negotiable 20% "Staff Charge" plus an additional 5% "Staff Gratuity" automatically added to your bill. Numerous Upcharges: The package is misleading. The preferred ceremony site costs an additional 500, and taking photos in the mansion is 300-500. A day-of coordinator is a 1,480 upsell. Poor Value: The alcohol package included weak drinks in small cups, and we were charged the full premium price for children. The getting-ready suites are very outdated, and we were required to have our guests help clean up flower petals after the ceremony, despite the mandatory staffing charge. Final Thoughts While the property is beautiful, the operational side of our experience was deeply flawed. The failure to deliver on our confirmed food order, the use of store-bought cake mix, the venue's refusal to take accountability, and the rigid timeline with constant upcharges left a sour taste. We cannot recommend it without serious reservations.

Thank you for your feedback, Lucy. We were so happy you and your guests enjoyed our venue and the food on your special day. We are disheartened to hear of your dissatisfaction a month after your event. We want to directly address your concerns. We stand by the transparency of our process and the service we provide. Throughout your entire event, you and your party were very complimentary of everything, including the food taste and quality. The detailed event timeline, as with every other detail, is discussed and readily available throughout the entire planning process to ensure couples are fully aware of how the evening will transpire. You and your spouse selected your menu and every other detail, finalizing the order with your confirmation and signature. Your guests were served exactly what you ordered. The cake boxes you took a picture of were remnants of cakes made for a staff training session. Our cakes are prepared from scratch for each event. From the very beginning, your proposal clearly outlined all costs, including staffing, gratuity, and sales tax. These numbers were adjusted as you made changes and additions to your banquet order, allowing you to see them throughout your entire planning and finalization period. The packages are not misleading; our planning documents provide a full list of add-ons and their associated costs. The alcohol package includes well drinks using house spirits with the appropriate amount of alcohol, and this is how drinks were prepared for your guests. We are truly saddened by this situation. We stand by our attempts to work with you and wish you both a blessed, healthy, and happy life together.

The Empress Estate was an absolute dream venue for our wedding. From the moment we first reached out, the staff was incredibly effective, understanding, and kind in their communication, guiding us through every step of the planning process. On the day of, their attention to detail and execution was impeccable - when unexpected rain forced us to move the ceremony under the beautiful deck, they transformed the space into a magical, nature-inspired setting that felt so romantic and unique. The staff was always on point, getting things taken care of and making sure everything went perfectly. The care and compassion from everyone at The Empress Estate made our day absolutely perfect. We couldn't have asked for a more beautiful, special, and memorable wedding venue.

I recently held my wedding at The Empress, and I can't recommend it enough! The planning process was seamless and I didn't have to worry about many vendors required for wedding thanks to their numerous options for food, cake, decorations, and beverage plans. The food was delicious, with plenty for all our guests, and the cake was a highlight as well. The venue itself is stunning. The staff is incredibly attentive, ensuring everything went smoothly and communication is excellent; they reply promptly to messages. They are also very transparent about their contracts, making everything easy to understand. I appreciated their monthly payment plan, which alleviated financial stress leading up to the big day. One of the features I liked is the flexibility in guest count; you can finalize numbers just a month before the event. This is a huge advantage compared to hiring third-party catering. Another cool feature about this venue is that, while we didn't need a weather contingency plan, I noticed the building is spacious enough to host a ceremony on the balcony, which is roofed, providing a solid backup option for outdoor ceremonies. Lastly, I highly recommend considering their preferred vendors as they know very well how the Empress operates. I especially recommend Stevie, the florist—she's both affordable and talented. Overall, The Empress made our wedding unforgettable!
