Dakotah Van Doran Photo & Video

We're Jim & Dakotah - a Virginia Beach-based husband and wife photographer/videographer duo serving the entire US East Coast. We specialize in delivering elevated-edgy imagery to wedding couples that seek something a little more dramatic and polished.

Both our photo and video work lean heavily into editorial-inspired posing and lighting, so you end up feeling (and looking) like you belong in the pages of a fashion magazine centerfold. We're definitely not your mom's recommended photographer as you won't catch us delivering corny, awkward images - just stunning, elegant photo and video that continuously captivates in the coming decades of your love story.

This review is for the fellas. I wasn’t the guy who walked into wedding planning caring much about photography. I thought it was the extra fluff that you *had* to pay for. But after seeing the final photos from Dakotah, I get it. She and her team are professionals who know how to capture your wedding and deliver a product you can't help but admire. Her work is “editorial,” which in normal terms means the photos look polished and intentional, like something you’d see in a magazine, but still feels real. Nothing cheesy, nothing forced. She gives clear direction, knows angles and lighting, and makes you look comfortable even when you aren't. As a guy who doesn’t feel like 'a natural' in front of a camera, that mattered. You might only wear a suit or tux once in your life. Spending the money to make sure YOUR day (it's not just your bride's day) is captured well is worth it because your wedding day goes by incredibly fast—too fast for you to remember everything. Your photos are the only thing you’ll have to look back on in 40 years. You'll be gobsmacked when you get your photos and you’ll be awestruck every time you look thereafter. If you’re a guy on the fence about whether a high-end photographer is worth it, Dakotah is. No question at all.

Where do we even begin? Choosing Dakotah as our photographer was hands down the best investment we made for our wedding. From our very first engagement shoot in the spring, she absolutely wowed us. She made us look and feel incredible — we’ve never felt more gorgeous or more like ourselves. We still look at those photos every single day and can’t get over how stunning they are. When the wedding day came (complete with rain and all!), Dakotah, Jim, and Anderson rolled with every twist and turn with total grace and humor. They made the entire day feel effortless. Dakotah and Jim are warm, funny, and make everyone around them feel comfortable and confident — including all of our guests. Anderson was amazing as the second photographer, helping capture every detail and moment we might have missed. The way this team works together is seamless. Dakotah’s direction and creativity are unmatched, and Jim’s presence behind the camera adds so much calm and fun to the day. We could truly feel how much they care about their couples — they listen, they adapt, and they help with absolutely everything. What started as a vendor relationship has truly turned into a friendship. I’ve never been more excited to get photos or messages from someone because I know whatever Dakotah and Jim create is going to be magic. Every single time, they blow us away. If you’re debating whether to book them, don’t wait another second — invest in them. You will not regret it. They are simply the best, and we cannot recommend them enough.

We absolutely loved working Dakotah and Jim!! From the moment they arrived, they were professional, organized, and brought such a calming and positive presence to our wedding day. They blended in seamlessly with our guests, made everyone feel comfortable, and filled the entire day with great energy. The photos and video captured every detail and emotion beautifully. Dakotah and Jim were truly our dream team. We are beyond thankful for the incredible moments they captured so beautifully on our wedding day. Not only were they professional, but they brought such a warm, friendly presence that made everyone feel at ease. They kept everything running smoothly without ever making it feel rushed or forced. Dakotah, especially, went above and beyond to ensure that the photos reflected exactly what was most meaningful to us—she listened, cared, and truly made it personal. They even managed to make us go viral when my husband surprised me dressed as Justin Bieber, and they captured every hilarious and unforgettable second of it! If there’s one piece of advice I could give to anyone planning their wedding, it’s to hire these two. Their talent, energy, and genuine passion for their work are unmatched. Absolutely amazing!
