Founder and Lead Officiant

Joanna is a writer, performer, and experienced officiant who marries couples of all backgrounds within 100 miles of Washington, DC. Raised in a multi-faith home and having lived abroad, she loves weaving cultural and religious traditions into ceremonies. (Don't worry, they're still mostly secular and feminist!) Joanna had an elopement, a formal wedding, and a separate reception—so she truly gets it! She’s ordained through AMM and ULC, trained in the Business of Officiating, and is a member of IAPWO. In off hours, she walks her rescue dog, Corrigan, reads or sings. She can’t wait to help you create a celebration that feels just right.

I'm a secular, feminist millennial . My ceremonies are all about you, just the way your wedding day should be. I know I've done well when your family are convinced I've known you for years after they soak in the ceremony - because I aim to feel like your friend, not like a third parent. I want the process of creating your ceremony to be as fun, easy and stress free as possible for you, and I'm available to help nearly 24/7. I also have a curated library of readings and traditions I shared with all my couples to help inspire your ceremony plans and save you some Google searches!

    Joanna is exceptional

    The best

    If you have not already reached out to Joanna to schedule a time to chat with her about being your officiant- do it asap! Joanna was one of the best vendors we had and made our ceremony special. She did an amazing job in putting together and leading a ceremony that told our love story in a thoughtful and sweet manner.     The warmest officiant!

    Joanna made our ceremony so special and we are so grateful to her. Everyone was convinced she was our best friend because she wrote and delivered such a beautiful ceremony. It was beyond our wildest dreams and felt so authentically us and magical. All of our guests were supremely impressed by her and told us how warm the ceremony felt. You are the ONLY officiant I would recommend in the dmv! Yes, duh! I hate that anyone even has to ask this, but I marry all consenting adults.
Yup! Your ceremony, mostly your rules (we're just not gonna say "obey" at all, that's my one rule!)
Of course! I've even researched a bunch and put them in a doc to share with you already.
I will, for an additional $250 fee. Rehearsals often block me from being able to perform other weddings, so they're not my first choice - usually your planner or venue manager will want to run them.
Yes, and I can talk you through the whole process. You have to get your own marriage license, but after that it's all in my hands. I'll get your signed license back to the court and even order you the certified copies you need for health insurance, name changes, etc.
Max 30 minutes most of the time. I know you really want to get to your party!
Virginia, Maryland, DC, West Virginia, Delaware and Pennsylvania (with advance notice). For anywhere else, let me know and I'll look into things! Most of my ceremonies are in Virginia, since your options for secular officiation are limited there.
I don't require premarital counseling, but I'm certified through Prepare Enrich if that is something you are interested in. This includes a survey you and your spouse both take independently, with a guided discussion afterward to review the results. This costs $250 for the first session and $175 for all following sessions.
Obviously! If you want my input (even just to check that you've both gone for the same tone and length), I'm happy to give it, but it's not at all required. Otherwise I always suggest including traditional vows (do you take this person to be your lawfully married spouse, to have and to hold, etc) because we've heard them in movies all our lives and those words hold power.
I've spent my life training in acting, speaking and singing, and even made it to the top 20 of the National Speech and Debate Association nation wide tournament in 2008 (#coolkid and #theatrekid). So when my cousin asked me to officiate her wedding in 2022, I was beyond honored and also knew it would likely go down well. Afterwards, her wedding planner actually asked if she could book me for other weddings...and I've been off to the races ever since!
