How much does hair and makeup cost for a wedding?

According to Thumbtack, wedding makeup artists cost $90–$475 per person on average in 2022. Here at Zola, we recommend putting aside around $300 for your own wedding hair and makeup. Services for wedding party members are generally less expensive, as the artist or stylist will spend less time perfecting the look. Be sure to have a transparent conversation with your wedding party if you expect them to cover their own costs.

How long does wedding hair and makeup take to do?

The more involved the look, the more time it will take. In general, allocate 60–90 minutes for your own looks and 30–45 minutes for each member of the wedding party. Extensions, extra thick hair, and intricate makeup all take longer. Communicating who (with pictures and descriptions) is getting what (again, with photos) to your stylists will help them plan an accurate timeline.

Who usually pays for hair and makeup for the wedding party?

Traditionally, whoever is asking for the services should pay. However, this may not be in the budget for every couple. If you’re planning on having your wedding party pay, be transparent when you first ask them to be in the wedding party itself. Then, they can choose whether it’s possible for them to participate.

Honestly I was blown away on my trial and knew I would book them immediately. Makeup was extremely professional, Cat asked what I wanted, style etc. She had good hygiene when using makeup products: disinfecting, using disposable brushes, setting aside used tools. Horrified to say that unfortunately this was not my experience in all the makeup trials I did. Secondly, the makeup was a full trial, not just a teaser, which again is not always the experience I had.. Cat asked what I liked and disliked and took good notes. The makeup is GOOD. It is polished and stays on well. She locks everything in and it did not budge with sweat, rain, humidity. As for hair, I was really specific that I wanted BIG hollywood curls with extensions. Alex DELIVERED!! This girl knows hair! She is quick and the hair looks EXACT to the picture I showed. I had my wedding in New Orleans so they flew out. Everything about working with them was such a pleasure and so professional. Cat was so responsive every time, easy adjustments, and the contract was straightforward. They showed up right on time and were rockstars with everyone. Case in point - it rained heavily and then was really hot. The Makeup STAYED! “My glam team was Monique and Michelle. They were amazing! It was great to get to meet them and work with them. We did a trial run and it was just beautiful and they accepted and wanted feedback from the trial. They asked for inspiration pictures and were able to achieve the look I was thinking of. As someone with naturally curly hair, looking for a hair stylist that understands and can make my hair look good was something important for me. Prior to wedding day, they asked for inspiration pictures from the bridesmaids. There were 7 girls getting hair and makeup or just one service. The stylist had schedules and we were able to have everyone done in time. We had a great morning with Michelle and Monique and we all looked so great all day long. The airbrush makeup is in fact cry proof. So glad to have found a glam team that was understanding, fun, professional, and amazing !”

I don't normally wear a lot of makeup, but during my trial, Sophia did an excellent job working with my inspiration photos and talking with me about my vision to come up with a look that felt natural and still 'myself' , while still being elevated and giving me the coverage I needed for the big day. She was supportive and easy to communicate with throughout the entire process. “Rie was a lifesaver! I had initially reached out to a different vendor in September of 2024 and we had an ongoing conversation while I considered pricing through November. We had a verbal agreement to work together but before she sent me her contract she ghosted me. I thought it was because the holidays were coming up and we all get busy at the end of the year. But mid-January come along, I had not heard back, and I was a little over two months away from my wedding! I reached out to a ton of makeup artists, and Rie was among the first to respond. She was so understanding from the get-go and her kindness paired with her makeup style was what sold me! Immediately, I knew she was who I wanted to work for. Rie provided makeup services for me and five of my six bridesmaids by herself. She was even able to work with me to find time to do a makeup trial despite both our busy schedules (getting married in the off season I'm sure helped). She worked so efficiently and even finished before our scheduled time, and provided us all with little touch up kits. I tend to not wear too much makeup and the same goes for most of my bridesmaids, and Rie was able to take her "natural makeup" style and personalize it to everyone. I only wear makeup on special occasions, and when I do, I tend to be hyper aware of my face and the makeup on it. But Rie's application was so good, that I did not think about the makeup on my face once throughout the ten hour day. The natural makeup style might not be for everyone, the same way full glam is not for me, but if you lean that way, I highly recommend working with Rie!”

Through email communication to our first trial, it felt so natural and fun and I felt like we clicked immediately. Our trial was fun and she made me feel very comfortable to express things that I liked, didn’t like, or things I may not have been comfortable with. I made a last minute color pallet change from our trial to wedding day and she was on board ready to go. My nerves were so high the day and she was able to pull me out of my anxiety and nervousness and allowed me to take any space or simply acted as a really wonderful sounding board as I was expressing any of my insecurities. She made me feel strong and beautiful and she kept her positive composure throughout the entire (long) morning. Her second artist, Sandra, was a saint and really rocked it.
