How much does hair and makeup cost for a wedding?

According to Thumbtack, wedding makeup artists cost $90–$475 per person on average in 2022. Here at Zola, we recommend putting aside around $300 for your own wedding hair and makeup. Services for wedding party members are generally less expensive, as the artist or stylist will spend less time perfecting the look. Be sure to have a transparent conversation with your wedding party if you expect them to cover their own costs.

How long does wedding hair and makeup take to do?

The more involved the look, the more time it will take. In general, allocate 60–90 minutes for your own looks and 30–45 minutes for each member of the wedding party. Extensions, extra thick hair, and intricate makeup all take longer. Communicating who (with pictures and descriptions) is getting what (again, with photos) to your stylists will help them plan an accurate timeline.

Who usually pays for hair and makeup for the wedding party?

Traditionally, whoever is asking for the services should pay. However, this may not be in the budget for every couple. If you’re planning on having your wedding party pay, be transparent when you first ask them to be in the wedding party itself. Then, they can choose whether it’s possible for them to participate.

“Emily and her team were amazing! I did a lot of research before booking hair and makeup for my big day and came across Beauty by Emily and couldn’t have booked with her sooner! Starting at my trial, she made me so comfortable and even sent a prep sheet on how to best prep for this. She listened very intently to what I was saying I wanted and took the time to go through inspo photos I had saved to pick apart what I liked and disliked. After the trial, she was communicative leading up to the wedding day. On wedding day, she was very adaptable, as we had a small space to set up in and the room got very warm. They worked promptly to get my bridesmaids, myself, my mom and mother in law all pretty for the day of. Everyone’s hair and makeup lasted throughout the wind and the tears of the day. I felt extremely beautiful thanks to Emily and her team. She even included a bridal touch up kit which was so nice to have to refresh throughout the evening! For example, we didn't know at first if we would get ready at the salon or my venue but I was able to talk things out with Michelle and we came up with an action plan to get everybody ready in time! “My daughter used MrsHerculesGlam for her wedding hair and makeup a few months ago and looked absolutely beautiful. All of her pictures came out so perfect- looking like a magazine photos. I was so glad that my daughter found MrsHerculesGlam and knew I'd be booking her again in the future! After seeing her work, I knew I wanted to book MrsHercules for my upcoming elopement. Even though I wasn't having a big wedding, as an older woman, I still wanted to feel beautiful with my hair and makeup done for our courthouse wedding vows, downtown Tampa photoshoot, and reception dinner with family. Everything turned out perfect! First of all she came with everything we needed from all the makeup and hair products, styling tools, lighting and even a cute styling chair! It was nice to not have to worry about anything at all. For my hair- I shared photos from Pinterest to show the vision I had for my wedding hair. I was given guidance as to what extensions I needed to obtain that specific look, even the correct color when there were so many options available. It matched my hair perfectly and know one would have ever known that I had hair extensions in. The style came out exactly the way I wanted. I looked exactly like the photo that I had loved so much. She incorporated the fancy clip that I had purchased, and the long curls lasted all night long. I even looked great after I removed the extensions and rode out an additional full day with the curls! I was so grateful that the look held. I had an hour long photo shoot in 90 degree sunny heat and was sweating like crazy. The hair didn't budge, fall or frizz. I got so many compliments! Everyone walking by was complimenting my look, telling me how beautiful I was. I even had cars honking as they drove by! Afterwards, I looked great walking into the reception dinner with my family. I did not EVER have to touch my hair or adjust it. For a Florida girl with long, thick, wavy natural hair- this is unheard of in the heat and humidity! MrsHercules worked a miracle on my hair. For my make-up- my face lasted all day and night too! I was sure that it had melted off in the sun during our photos, but when we were done I went to freshen up and nothing had changed. I was still 100% perfect. What a relief! I was so worried that I was going to walk into dinner like a hot mess and I had nothing to worry about at all- MrsHercules had me covered! I did touch up my lips, but that was just because we had a bunch of photos of us kissing. She even gave a little touch up kit that was perfect. It had a little makeup puff with some powder and a lip touch up. My girl knew exactly what I needed! I cannot thank the MrsHerculesGlam enough for making my day unforgettable. I am so happy when I look at the pictures and see not only how beautiful I looked but to remember how STRESS FREE the entire process was and the fact that I didn't have to worry about touching anything up or fixing anything was PRICELESS. “Kiss This Makeup did a WONDERFUL job with my wedding hair and makeup, as well as hair and makeup for my wedding party. I have very fine, straight hair that has a difficult time holding a curl, but Jenna Marie was so open-minded and willing to work with me on finding solutions that would work well for me. My hair help up for the entire wedding (including through Hurricane Helene!!) and was so beautiful. I was unsure what I was looking for as my hairstyle, but Jenna helped me narrow down my options and advised based on my face shape, dress, and overall vibe of the wedding. My makeup was so beautiful, and didn't irritate my sensitive skin at all and left me with no breakouts! It lasted the entire day and looks beautiful in my photographs. Jenna and Nicole also did the hair and makeup of my wedding party, and everyone was in love with their looks, and looked great the whole day. KTM was very flexible when I last minute had a family member ask if they could get their makeup done, and the team was able to adjust the schedule to accommodate her. Additionally, we have many LGBTQ members of our wedding party, and KTM was nothing but lovely and welcoming to all. They really went above and beyond, and I have never felt so beautiful in my whole life. I will never forget how special and stunning KTM made me feel for the entire getting-ready process, and how well-organized they were, which left me feeling no stress about how the getting-ready part of the day would go, and also feeling confident that everyone would look great throughout the entire event.
