According to Thumbtack, wedding makeup artists cost $90–$475 per person on average in 2022. Here at Zola, we recommend putting aside around $300 for your own wedding hair and makeup. Services for wedding party members are generally less expensive, as the artist or stylist will spend less time perfecting the look. Be sure to have a transparent conversation with your wedding party if you expect them to cover their own costs.

How long does wedding hair and makeup take to do?

The more involved the look, the more time it will take. In general, allocate 60–90 minutes for your own looks and 30–45 minutes for each member of the wedding party. Extensions, extra thick hair, and intricate makeup all take longer. Communicating who (with pictures and descriptions) is getting what (again, with photos) to your stylists will help them plan an accurate timeline.

Who usually pays for hair and makeup for the wedding party?

Traditionally, whoever is asking for the services should pay. However, this may not be in the budget for every couple. If you’re planning on having your wedding party pay, be transparent when you first ask them to be in the wedding party itself. Then, they can choose whether it’s possible for them to participate.

I had some issues with my lashes during the trial and Cat used a different one on my wedding and it fixed the problem. They take your feedback seriously during your trial so you have nothing to worry about on your wedding day. I normally don't wear makeup except special festive occasions and my trial stood the test of spicy hotpot at the end of the day without smudging. Same thing on my wedding day everything stayed until pretty much late evening after dinner, cake and bubble tea. Not immediately advertised, but they also do groom makeup! On the wedding day we had: my bridal hair and makeup, 5 bridesmaids’ makeup, mother of the bride makeup, and 4 bridesmaid hair styling - so quite a bit going on. Corinne made sure that all of us felt 100% comfortable and happy with the end results. We were right on schedule the entire time (which was very important to me) and I never felt stressed. When planning it was imperative for me to have LGBTQ friendly vendors. I am a natural curly girl and kept my curls for the wedding… which was outside… in Florida… in 80% humidity - so you’d assume my hair would frizz. “Alina did my bridal trial in May and then makeup for me, my mother, my maid of honor and my now wife. I really struggled to find a makeup artist whose work was elegant and timeless. Everyone I had seen before meeting Alina was applying makeup in a very heavy handed way, which just didn't suit the style we were going for. Alina did a wonderful job, everyone's makeup stayed on all day, even though we got married on a hot, humid D.C day. She is a very warm and friendly person and immediately made us all feel at ease when working with her. She really went above and beyond to deliver classy, timeless looks.
