How much does hair and makeup cost for a wedding?

According to Thumbtack, wedding makeup artists cost $90–$475 per person on average in 2022. Here at Zola, we recommend putting aside around $300 for your own wedding hair and makeup. Services for wedding party members are generally less expensive, as the artist or stylist will spend less time perfecting the look. Be sure to have a transparent conversation with your wedding party if you expect them to cover their own costs.

How long does wedding hair and makeup take to do?

The more involved the look, the more time it will take. In general, allocate 60–90 minutes for your own looks and 30–45 minutes for each member of the wedding party. Extensions, extra thick hair, and intricate makeup all take longer. Communicating who (with pictures and descriptions) is getting what (again, with photos) to your stylists will help them plan an accurate timeline.

Who usually pays for hair and makeup for the wedding party?

Traditionally, whoever is asking for the services should pay. However, this may not be in the budget for every couple. If you’re planning on having your wedding party pay, be transparent when you first ask them to be in the wedding party itself. Then, they can choose whether it’s possible for them to participate.

How much should we tip for our wedding hair and makeup artists?

A good rule of thumb is to tip 15–20%.

She has an amazing space where she does her trials and she really nailed the vision and vibe that I was going for. On my Wedding day we did just a minor front part adjustment and the girls that worked with her were great and very efficient for my BMs, MOG and sisters in law. She even gave me a little touch up kit for my hair for the rest of the night, not that I needed it. My hair did not BUDGE all night. Bree is the sweetest person and she's dedicated to making you feel beautiful on your special day. Would recommend a thousand times over.”

“Alina was absolutely wonderful MUA and made me feel beautiful but still like myself. We ended up doing two make up trials because I changed what I was asking for and I was so happy I did. My makeup lasted all night, didn't move a bit, and looked amazing in person and in pictures. I also loved how Svetlana did my hair! I asked for my hair down but pinned back with soft curls and it lasted through a full day of very warm temperatures and held my long veil in no problem. 10/10 to both of these ladies could not recommend enough!!”

Through email communication to our first trial, it felt so natural and fun and I felt like we clicked immediately. Our trial was fun and she made me feel very comfortable to express things that I liked, didn’t like, or things I may not have been comfortable with. I made a last minute color pallet change from our trial to wedding day and she was on board ready to go. My nerves were so high the day and she was able to pull me out of my anxiety and nervousness and allowed me to take any space or simply acted as a really wonderful sounding board as I was expressing any of my insecurities. She made me feel strong and beautiful and she kept her positive composure throughout the entire (long) morning. Her second artist, Sandra, was a saint and really rocked it. From day 1, I felt like I was in good hands for my wedding hair and make up. The team was willing to make things work - however I needed them to work! For example, we didn't know at first if we would get ready at the salon or my venue but I was able to talk things out with Michelle and we came up with an action plan to get everybody ready in time!
