How much does hair and makeup cost for a wedding?

According to Thumbtack, wedding makeup artists cost $90–$475 per person on average in 2022. Here at Zola, we recommend putting aside around $300 for your own wedding hair and makeup. Services for wedding party members are generally less expensive, as the artist or stylist will spend less time perfecting the look. Be sure to have a transparent conversation with your wedding party if you expect them to cover their own costs.

How long does wedding hair and makeup take to do?

The more involved the look, the more time it will take. In general, allocate 60–90 minutes for your own looks and 30–45 minutes for each member of the wedding party. Extensions, extra thick hair, and intricate makeup all take longer. Communicating who (with pictures and descriptions) is getting what (again, with photos) to your stylists will help them plan an accurate timeline.

Who usually pays for hair and makeup for the wedding party?

Traditionally, whoever is asking for the services should pay. However, this may not be in the budget for every couple. If you’re planning on having your wedding party pay, be transparent when you first ask them to be in the wedding party itself. Then, they can choose whether it’s possible for them to participate.

“Alina did my bridal trial in May and then makeup for me, my mother, my maid of honor and my now wife. I really struggled to find a makeup artist whose work was elegant and timeless. Everyone I had seen before meeting Alina was applying makeup in a very heavy handed way, which just didn't suit the style we were going for. Alina did a wonderful job, everyone's makeup stayed on all day, even though we got married on a hot, humid D.C day. She is a very warm and friendly person and immediately made us all feel at ease when working with her. She really went above and beyond to deliver classy, timeless looks. Also, my wife is Black and was really pleased with how Alina worked with her skin tone to create a look that didn't leave her feeling washed out.”

“I am PICKY about my hair, and it notoriously does not hold a curl very long. Bree was able to work with me to achieve the exact look I wanted while also ensuring it would hold a curl. She also helped me care for and pick out extensions which were a must. Not only that, but she did two diff styles during my trial and I still asked her to do it differently on the day of and she executed better than I could've imagined. Ultimately, it was very important to me to be surrounded by chill, positive vibes on my wedding day and Bree her assistant were exactly that. If you read nothing else: I literally ran out into a blizzard in the middle of my wedding, and it still held up after that. THANK YOU!”
