How much does hair and makeup cost for a wedding?

According to Thumbtack, wedding makeup artists cost $90–$475 per person on average in 2022. Here at Zola, we recommend putting aside around $300 for your own wedding hair and makeup. Services for wedding party members are generally less expensive, as the artist or stylist will spend less time perfecting the look. Be sure to have a transparent conversation with your wedding party if you expect them to cover their own costs.

How long does wedding hair and makeup take to do?

The more involved the look, the more time it will take. In general, allocate 60–90 minutes for your own looks and 30–45 minutes for each member of the wedding party. Extensions, extra thick hair, and intricate makeup all take longer. Communicating who (with pictures and descriptions) is getting what (again, with photos) to your stylists will help them plan an accurate timeline.

Who usually pays for hair and makeup for the wedding party?

Traditionally, whoever is asking for the services should pay. However, this may not be in the budget for every couple. If you’re planning on having your wedding party pay, be transparent when you first ask them to be in the wedding party itself. Then, they can choose whether it’s possible for them to participate.

“My daughter used MrsHerculesGlam for her wedding hair and makeup a few months ago and looked absolutely beautiful. All of her pictures came out so perfect- looking like a magazine photos. I was so glad that my daughter found MrsHerculesGlam and knew I'd be booking her again in the future! After seeing her work, I knew I wanted to book MrsHercules for my upcoming elopement. Even though I wasn't having a big wedding, as an older woman, I still wanted to feel beautiful with my hair and makeup done for our courthouse wedding vows, downtown Tampa photoshoot, and reception dinner with family. Everything turned out perfect! First of all she came with everything we needed from all the makeup and hair products, styling tools, lighting and even a cute styling chair! It was nice to not have to worry about anything at all. For my hair- I shared photos from Pinterest to show the vision I had for my wedding hair. I was given guidance as to what extensions I needed to obtain that specific look, even the correct color when there were so many options available. It matched my hair perfectly and know one would have ever known that I had hair extensions in. The style came out exactly the way I wanted. I looked exactly like the photo that I had loved so much. She incorporated the fancy clip that I had purchased, and the long curls lasted all night long. I even looked great after I removed the extensions and rode out an additional full day with the curls! I was so grateful that the look held. I had an hour long photo shoot in 90 degree sunny heat and was sweating like crazy. The hair didn't budge, fall or frizz. I got so many compliments! Everyone walking by was complimenting my look, telling me how beautiful I was. I even had cars honking as they drove by! Afterwards, I looked great walking into the reception dinner with my family. I did not EVER have to touch my hair or adjust it. For a Florida girl with long, thick, wavy natural hair- this is unheard of in the heat and humidity! MrsHercules worked a miracle on my hair. For my make-up- my face lasted all day and night too! I was sure that it had melted off in the sun during our photos, but when we were done I went to freshen up and nothing had changed. I was still 100% perfect. What a relief! I was so worried that I was going to walk into dinner like a hot mess and I had nothing to worry about at all- MrsHercules had me covered! I did touch up my lips, but that was just because we had a bunch of photos of us kissing. She even gave a little touch up kit that was perfect. It had a little makeup puff with some powder and a lip touch up. My girl knew exactly what I needed! I cannot thank the MrsHerculesGlam enough for making my day unforgettable. I am so happy when I look at the pictures and see not only how beautiful I looked but to remember how STRESS FREE the entire process was and the fact that I didn't have to worry about touching anything up or fixing anything was PRICELESS. “Alina was absolutely wonderful MUA and made me feel beautiful but still like myself. We ended up doing two make up trials because I changed what I was asking for and I was so happy I did. My makeup lasted all night, didn't move a bit, and looked amazing in person and in pictures. I also loved how Svetlana did my hair! I asked for my hair down but pinned back with soft curls and it lasted through a full day of very warm temperatures and held my long veil in no problem. 10/10 to both of these ladies could not recommend enough!!”

“Shimmer for You was great to work with! I did a trial with Jaime a few months ahead of time, and then adjusted things as needed day of. Jaime and her team did hair and makeup for me, 5 bridesmaids, and 2 moms. Everything went smoothly, and we were done on time. My hair looked bigger than I wanted day of, and we had enough time for Jaime to adjust it so it looked exactly how I wanted. I had worried that wedding makeup and lashes would look to heavy on me since I don’t usually wear much makeup (and I saw some full glam photos on the Zola profile), but the soft look Jaime did for me was perfect- I still looked like myself, but shimmery. I was also worried about foundation and lip colors looking too orange or yellow on me since I’m very fair with cool/pink undertones, but the color match was perfect, and we tried out a few lip colors at the trial to get it perfect. The moms and bridesmaids love their hair and makeup too! I absolutely recommend Shimmer for You!”

The day of my trial we finally met and it was beyond successful. She listened to everything I was saying and took the time to really understand and emulate what I envisioned. In that moment I knew I made the right choice. She was able to style my hair with different pieces, which I didn’t even think about, and gave her honest opinion.
