How much does hair and makeup cost for a wedding?

According to Thumbtack, wedding makeup artists cost $90–$475 per person on average in 2022. Here at Zola, we recommend putting aside around $300 for your own wedding hair and makeup. Services for wedding party members are generally less expensive, as the artist or stylist will spend less time perfecting the look. Be sure to have a transparent conversation with your wedding party if you expect them to cover their own costs.

How long does wedding hair and makeup take to do?

The more involved the look, the more time it will take. In general, allocate 60–90 minutes for your own looks and 30–45 minutes for each member of the wedding party. Extensions, extra thick hair, and intricate makeup all take longer. Communicating who (with pictures and descriptions) is getting what (again, with photos) to your stylists will help them plan an accurate timeline.

Who usually pays for hair and makeup for the wedding party?

Traditionally, whoever is asking for the services should pay. However, this may not be in the budget for every couple. If you’re planning on having your wedding party pay, be transparent when you first ask them to be in the wedding party itself. Then, they can choose whether it’s possible for them to participate.

How much should we tip for our wedding hair and makeup artists?

A good rule of thumb is to tip 15–20%.

“I had Cat and Alex as my makeup artist and hair stylist and they were absolutely amazing!! I used them for two days (welcome party and wedding) for me, my mother, and my 6 bridesmaids. If you want a team that will be professional, high quality work, and a pleasure to work with, this is your team. First - the trial. Honestly I was blown away on my trial and knew I would book them immediately. Makeup was extremely professional, Cat asked what I wanted, style etc. She had good hygiene when using makeup products: disinfecting, using disposable brushes, setting aside used tools. Horrified to say that unfortunately this was not my experience in all the makeup trials I did. Secondly, the makeup was a full trial, not just a teaser, which again is not always the experience I had.. Cat asked what I liked and disliked and took good notes. The makeup is GOOD. It is polished and stays on well. She locks everything in and it did not budge with sweat, rain, humidity. As for hair, I was really specific that I wanted BIG hollywood curls with extensions. Alex DELIVERED!! This girl knows hair! She is quick and the hair looks EXACT to the picture I showed. I had my wedding in New Orleans so they flew out. Everything about working with them was such a pleasure and so professional. Cat was so responsive every time, easy adjustments, and the contract was straightforward. They showed up right on time and were rockstars with everyone. Case in point - it rained heavily and then was really hot. The Makeup STAYED! It seriously did not budge one bit- for me, my mom, and all the bridesmaids. Of course curls will drop a bit from rain, but my hair was still stayed curled and the extensions were so good, everyone thought it was my actual hair. My bridesmaids hair who had it braided up - everything stayed. Highly recommend for a great, high quality vendor to work with!”

“I had an absolutely fabulous experience working with Sophia for hair and makeup for my wedding on August 3rd, 2025. I don't normally wear a lot of makeup, but during my trial, Sophia did an excellent job working with my inspiration photos and talking with me about my vision to come up with a look that felt natural and still 'myself' , while still being elevated and giving me the coverage I needed for the big day. She was supportive and easy to communicate with throughout the entire process. She was professional and prepared, and she even showed up early on the day of my wedding, helping to keep us on schedule for the busy morning. My mother, mother-in-law, and bridal party members who also got their hair and makeup done with Sophia LOVED their looks, and they all commented on how nice Sophia was to chat with during their services. I can't recommend Sophia enough for bridal hair and makeup!”

“As a person who had never been glam before, Emily and Sarah made me super comfortable and had realistic expectations. THANK YOU for explaining why 18-inch extensions would be beneficial, and I am thankful for trusting you. My hair and makeup were freaking epic! I wanted old Hollywood Glam with smokey eyes and, being 48, requesting glowy skin instead of baked. Sarah made all my bridesmaids feel gorgeous with their makeup, and our hair was perfect! Most of my bridesmaids had been BM before, so they were expecting to feel insecure and not sexy. All five were so impressed they felt and looked beautiful. I have never been called "Stunning" before my wedding day. On that day, Emily and the team not only made me look stunning, but they also made me feel stunning. My hairstyle with the 18-inch clip extensions was done perfectly. My makeup lasted all night, and the glow that was used on my chest gave me the most beautiful glowing skin. Thank you so much! “I had such an amazing wedding day with Cheryl as my makeup and hair stylist. She took a lot of care and detail to make sure my look was exactly what I wanted. Even going as far as to determine when I should wash my hair so my curls would stay in longest. My make up is as exactly what I wanted and we got there because she takes time to listen to what you want for your look. I don’t normally do a full glam look, I keep it natural in my day to day routine, but she translated that to a beautiful wedding day look. She even did touch ups for me between the ceremony and the reception. We got married in the summer and I was very hot and sweaty at the peak of the heat and she was even able to refresh my hair after it fell out from my sweat. TMI but it’s the realness of getting married in the summer in the south. The pictures speak for themselves how amazing I looked and felt. Thanks for helping make my special day so incredible.”
