My name is Bobbye Sandman, and I have been a pastry chef and cake designer for 25 years. In addition to custom cakes, we also specialize in deconstructed cake bars, dessert bars, and live-action dessert stations.

Even as a little girl with my cupcake and lemonade stand, I never thought I'd get to turn my creativity into a career. I learned quickly; a desk job is not for me. But running a business, working with couples on a wedding cake of their dreams? Now that is right up my alley. I've always had a knack for creative things. Whether that was a dance class, piano lessons, painting or theater. I've also had a knack for management. Managing my time, keeping up with chaos or connecting with people. This helped me plan my own wedding, help friends with their's and ultimately, end up in the wedding industry where I truly feel I belong.

What's in a name? I wanted to opt for something that describes WHAT I make rather than who is making it. I strive for classic, but sophisticated. And details details details! My thoughts turned toward a pearl, it embodies all of those things and best of all, it’s timeless. Pearls when looked at closely have a slight shimmer. A detail at a distance is beautiful and “pearly” as we call it, but up close it’s really a gentle sheen of sparkle that causes that. Also known as luster. But don't forget the modern element I love to design with. That influenced the final spelling and look of the name LUSTR.

Maile Cake Design is a marriage of my passion for the fine arts, baking and botanicals, with a touch of inspiration and flavors from the Hawaiian islands and my homeland, the Philippines. Very rarely do I repeat a design! My signature styles include palette knife work, free-flowing buttercream flowers, hand-painted, sugar and wafer paper flowers. Laura Curtis, a Culinary Institute of America grad, was working as a R&D chef when she made her first batch of bright pink, tart & fruity Raspberry Hibiscus marshmallows. Her husband suggested she name the new amply fluffy creations Malvi, short for malvavisco, the Spanish word for marshmallow. She created Malvi Mallows using European-Style butter and Fair-Trade chocolate to make Malvi cookies extra rich, and dried hibiscus flowers, locally roasted espresso, whole vanilla bean, and organic Georgia peanuts to maximize marshmallow flavors, then built a business so that everyone can party s'more.
