About Philip

A Brit from just south of London, I have lived in Texas since 2006, when I moved to marry my best friend. Before moving to America, I was a newspaper photographer covering local stories and sports, managed a portrait studio, and traveled the world. A lifelong photographer, I've spent an unhealthy amount of time in darkrooms developing rolls of film and learning from amazing mentors.

Philip Thomas Photography sets itself apart through a strict, unobtrusive documentary approach rooted in over 30 years of professional photojournalism experience. Rather than orchestrating traditional, heavily staged poses or chasing fleeting social media trends, Philip captures raw, unscripted moments as they naturally unfold. He treats events like true historical narratives, ensuring an authentic and emotionally honest record of the day.

    Excellent wedding photography

Phillip and his team did a wonderful job at our wedding. They were attentive, professional, and made us feel comfortable throughout the entire day. The photos for both digital and film were excellent and we appreciated their attention to detail. We are incredibly grateful for the memories that were preserved for us and would highly recommend them to anyone looking for a talented and dependable wedding photographer.

    Breathtaking and natural wedding photos

Our wedding photos turned out absolutely beautiful thanks to Philip Thomas and his second photographer, Deji Osinulu. Looking through these photos felt like getting to relive the whole day over again, while also seeing moments we didn't even realize were happening. Philip has a great attention to detail, taking breathtaking candids as if he were a fly on the wall. He was very professional, prompt, and organized, while also being a calming and warm presence. As someone who typically feels uncomfortable getting her photo taken, he made the entire experience feel natural and easy. I could not have asked for a better photographer to capture our special day

    Fantastic photographer

Choosing Philip Thomas as our wedding photographer was perhaps the easiest decision of our entire wedding planning process. We were immediately drawn to his candid, photojournalistic style, and he delivered. Philip took time to get to know us and helped us feel at ease during the entire process. We were looking for photographs that would remind us what our special day was like, and Philip did just that. As always, there are parts of our wedding that we would change in hindsight, but Philip isn't one of them. We cannot recommend him enough.

    Philip is AMAZING!! Highly Recommended

Philip was an absolute joy to work with. From our first consultation, his energy and genuine excitement made us feel so comfortable, he's incredibly easygoing, super fun, and has a real talent for putting everyone at ease, even on a big day. The photos turned out phenomenal, timeless, romantic, and full of emotion. He captured every heartfelt moment, from quiet glances to joyful group shots, in a way that feels authentic and cinematic. We’re still in awe of how beautifully he told our story through his lens. If you want a photographer who’s as fun as he is talented, and documentary style of photos, Philip is the one. 100000/10 Highly recommend!!!

    We 3 Philip!

If you have viewed Philip’s portfolio, you don’t need our review to tell you how beautiful his photography is! Our photos are absolutely stunning. They perfectly tell the story of our wedding day, and bring us right back to the moments they captured. Philip’s eye for interesting compositions still amazes us when we look at our pictures (which we do often). What may not be immediately evident by viewing a website though, is just how lovely working with Philip is. We were so impressed by his ability to find the perfect balance between being there to catch every single moment yet never feeling intrusive. He brought such a calming, friendly, kind demeanor to our wedding day and we could tell he truly cares about the comfort of his subjects. Philip is an artist, and you will no doubt be blown away by how he captures your wedding day.

I love the craft of photography. As a former press photographer, I tell stories using a documentary approach that captures the authentic moments of your special day. I keep things simple and make sure you both never get overwhelmed or feel like the wedding is a huge production of lights, light stands, and assistants. My trusty Leicas are all I need to get the job done right using available light. I happily capture a limited set of staged photographs, including the obligatory group photos and creative shots of the couple.
I’m from Chichester, England, and made the move to San Antonio, Texas, in 2006. Why? I married a Texan. We both worked on a cruise ship in 2002 and started dating.
I have been a full-time professional photographer since 1992, starting as a press photographer. I’ve been drawing since a kid, and then I picked up my first camera around 13 or 14 years old. I still sketch, but I do it with a camera. Good fortune has been in my life. I got a break working on a local newspaper shooting news stories, sports, and handshake pics, and I developed my craft. Most importantly, I had great mentors who taught me a lot! I then traveled the world for ten years before meeting my wife, who hails from Texas.
Well, that’s how I feel too. Seriously. I’m a very calm, mellow person (some even say I’m funny) who tends to blend into the scene rather than bring attention to myself. I have this British accent which helps, apparently. Combined with my documentary style, will have you both used to me within the 30 minutes of getting ready time. The only time you’ll really be aware of the cameras is in the family group photo and the creative portraits. You can just be you, and I will take care of the rest.
You will see that I’m very thorough and I cover the wedding day, including all the decor and details as I find them. There is no need to provide a shot list. The only list that I might need is a list of the family group shots. If I have one of those detailed shot lists from the internet that your photographer must cover, then I really cannot focus on delivering what you hired me for in the first place.
It varies with every wedding that I shoot, so there is no set answer. I’m not a ‘machine gunner’ hoping to get lucky shots. I think, anticipate, and react to moments ensuring great images every time. ‘Less is more’. Quality over quantity.
My hero of sorts is a French photographer, Henri Cartier-Bresson. He is considered the master of candid photography and was one of the early pioneers of street photography. It’s his particular early work that I’m drawn to. Cartier-Bresson was uniquely talented at capturing decisive moments using geometry, composition, form, and balance in his images. I have many photographers I enjoy reading about, and if you come to my studio, you’ll see a huge stack of books.
$1500 will hold the date along with a signed contract.
Yes. I photograph Texas statewide, all over North America and Europe, passport-ready. I love shooting in my home base of San Antonio, Texas. 50% of my weddings are in Houston, Austin, Dallas, and the Texas Gulf. My recent weddings were in New York, New Jersey, Washington DC, Santa Fe, and California.
Yes, all images are edited in-house. Images take approximately 6-8 weeks and are delivered to a private gallery.
