What’s involved in Premarital Counseling?

Premarital Counseling, sometimes called Pre-commitment Counseling is a way of diving into the biggest barriers to a lasting marriage and giving couples the tools to thrive! In this 4 week program we cover the most important conversations to have before the wedding: ✓ Communication skills ✓ Financial planning ✓ Views on gender roles ✓ Intimacy (or lack thereof) ✓ Realistic expectations of your partner ✓ Infertility and deciding whether to have children ✓ Parenting (and re-parenting!) values ✓ and finally… differences in religious and spiritual beliefs

We don't have any "problems" can we still do Premarital Counseling?

Wonderful! Most couples are as happy as they have ever been when they are planning their wedding (let’s hope so!) But every couple can benefit from taking an honest look at their relationship, communication styles, and desires for a lasting partnership. However, not everyone wants (or needs) therapy to do it. That’s where Premarital Counseling is different - it’s not therapy! Research shows that couples who do Premarital Counseling have a 30% higher success rate in avoiding divorce. They also report feeling happier and more satisfied in their marriage! (win win!)

What if we are getting married *really* soon?

No problem! The program typically takes 4 weeks from the first intake appointment, but I offer a one-year window following the wedding to complete the program. (You’ve got time!)

Do you work with LGBTQ+ Couples?

Accepted Answer

Yes! I am a member of the Open and Affirming Coalition and have worked extensively with LGBTQ+ couples and the unique gifts they bring, and challenges they face, in their relationships. I also have over a decade of experience in supporting those going through religious trauma and healing their spiritual identity. As an interfaith chaplain, I bring special skills to this aspect of our time together that very few therapists are equipped to handle.

Is this the same as couples therapy?

Nope! I am not a licensed therapist and this is not therapy. More importantly, I will not tell you that you are marrying the wrong person or that your relationship is doomed! Since you have made the decision to commit yourselves to one another, I wish to do everything I can to help you have a happy and successful marriage! I am a Yale educated interfaith chaplain and I am Certified in each the following modalities:  ✓ Gottman Method Couples Therapy (Level II)  ✓ Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work  ✓ Prepare/Enrich Premarital and Relationship Counseling  ✓ Mindfulness Meditation Leadership  ✓ Trauma-Informed Yoga Instructor (RYT)
