About this venue

The Backyard is a family-friendly outdoor wine & beer garden and event space located on the corner of 13th & Railroad Streets in beautiful downtown Paso Robles. Our spacious outdoor venue is perfect for a casual get-together (or can be decorated to create a more formal setting) and is a very popular option for rehearsal dinners, wedding welcome receptions, and after parties. With available seating for up to 325 guests (and standing room for many more), we offer a variety of seating options for both small and large groups. 28 rotating taps showcase local craft beer, cider and wine. Choose to order off our catering menu for self-serve buffet style dining, create a custom limited menu for your group, or hire an outside caterer or private chef. The Backyard offers a casual atmosphere with everything needed onsite, options for all budgets, and a customized experience. Buyouts for private events are available. The Lawn is a semi-private fenced-in area featuring artificial grass, with surrounding bamboo providing additional privacy.

Six traditional German beer garden tables and benches each seat 6-8 adults comfortably. Bar stools around the perimeter provide additional seating for 13 more guests. The Lawn is a favorite space for families with young children and those seeking a little more privacy. Note: There is some shade, but no heaters in the Lawn. Propane heaters may be rented.

Side Yard

The Side Yard is an open-air space situated between the Main Patio and 13th Street with seating for up to 60 guests and standing room for 40 more.

The area can be roped off and signage posted to ensure privacy for you and your guests. The Stage is located here, perfect for live music or a DJ. Traditional German biergarten tables and benches provide table seating, with bar stools along the 13th street fence line and patio furniture & lawn chairs providing additional seating. Note: There are a few umbrellas and propane heaters, but no shade structures or misters in the Side Yard. Additional propane heaters may be rented.

The Whole Backyard

Private Event / Buy-Out – The Backyard can be reserved for private gatherings, providing you with exclusive access to all of our staff and facilities.

Open air venue with plenty of shade, umbrellas and misters for the hotter months, and fire pits and heaters for the colder months. Seating available for up to 325 guests (with standing room for many more). Catering is available through our onsite restaurant or hire outside catering or a private chef. Make your special event truly memorable by renting one of the most unique spaces in SLO County.

Laid-Back Perfection: Unforgettable & Stress-Free
I can't say enough good things about The Backyard on Thirteenth! We held our wedding reception there in April 2021, and it was an absolutely perfect experience. From the very beginning, owners Rus and Amy went above and beyond to help us prepare. Planning a wedding is always stressful, but we were doing so during COVID, which added a whole extra layer of complexity. We also lived about 4 hours away and hadn't even seen the space in person before booking. Rus and Amy's communication, flexibility, and genuine care made us feel completely confident in our decision. The venue itself was everything we wanted and more. It had a private, laid-back atmosphere that was exactly the vibe we were going for. It wasn't just a beautiful space; it also offered fantastic beer and wine! Since our wedding, we've returned to The Backyard on Thirteenth for other events, and it truly feels like a home away from home. It's a special place, and we're so grateful to Rus and Amy for making our wedding reception so unforgettable. I highly recommend The Backyard on Thirteenth to anyone looking for a unique and wonderful venue.

Perfect place for wedding welcome reception!
The Backyard on Thirteenth was the perfect venue for our welcome reception. They communicated very well throughout the entire planning process, and were incredibly flexible in working with us on different package options to fit our budget. The Backyard team helped us decorate and set up for our special day, and they worked closely with us on the timing to ensure the event went smoothly. Weddings can be so expensive, so we were thrilled to find a venue that could provide a beautiful and seamless welcome reception experience within our budget. We couldn't have asked for a better partner to help make our wedding celebration so memorable.

Yes, outside wine and/or champagne may be brought in if arranged ahead of time (limits apply). A corkage fee of $15/bottle will be charged. Our bartenders will pour the wine for your guests - you will only be charged for opened bottles, and any unopened bottles will be returned to you. No other outside alcoholic beverages are permitted on the premises at any time.

There is an onsite parking lot with 5 spaces, including 1 handicapped spot. However, parking lot access is not guaranteed unless prearranged. Ample street parking is available, and we are within walking distance of several downtown hotels. Please do not park in any of the neighboring businesses’ parking lots (as your vehicle may be towed).

Yes, we are a family-friendly establishment; however, children must always be supervised by a parent or guardian. All guests must be at least 21 years old with a valid government issued ID to purchase and/or consume alcohol on premises.

No, we don’t brew our own beer. Instead, we proudly showcase many of the Central Coast’s best local craft breweries including: Firestone Walker, BarrelHouse, Wild Fields, Central Coast Brewing, Liquid Gravity, There Does Not Exist, and more. And for those non-beer drinkers in your group, we also serve a wide selection of local craft cider, wine, hard seltzer, and hard kombucha.

Yes, we’ve partnered with a local small batch cocktail mixer company YES Cocktails to create specialty shochu-based cocktail drinks.

Yes, we have a number of options available in cans and bottles including sodas, tea, juice, sparkling and still water, non-alcoholic kombucha, and non-alcoholic beer. We also have a free self-serve water station.

Yes, we offer a lunch and dinner menu. We also offer a separate catering menu for larger parties and special events. Food menu, pricing, options, and service arrangements (i.e. timing, set-up, logistics, etc.) will need to be agreed upon and coordinated in advance and may require a deposit. Copies of our current regular and catering menus are posted on our website and are also available by request. Please note that these menus are subject to change, and some dishes are only available seasonally.

Yes, outside food options for large groups of 16+ people are allowed with prior approval.

Yes, you are welcome to bring your own flowers and decorations. However, items like confetti, glitter and feathers (including balloons that come with these items inside) are strictly prohibited. Your area must be cleared by your reservation end time. If there are no reservations prior to yours, and no walk-in customers occupying the space, then you are welcome to come in early to decorate and set up. Otherwise, you will have to wait until the space is unoccupied. The only way to ensure early access is to reserve the space for the prior time slot.

No, The Backyard is intentionally designed to be an outdoor venue to take full advantage of the Central Coast’s amazing climate. As such, it is very weather dependent so be sure to dress accordingly. We do have a few small-covered areas (Garage, Porches) and are equipped with plenty of shade, umbrellas, misters, heaters, and fire pits to provide comfort during most days and evenings.

Yes, you may choose to have an Open bar, a Hosted bar, or a No-Host bar: Open bar - your guests may order any drinks they like during the event, and the charges will go onto one tab. Hosted bar - you agree to pay for a certain number of drink tickets, or up to a certain dollar amount. Once that limit is reached, guests may purchase their own drinks. No-Host / Cash bar - guests will purchase their own drinks (no open tab). A credit card is required to open a tab. Wristbands or drink tickets are available. CA Sales tax (8.75%) and gratuity/service charge (20%) will automatically be added to all Open and Hosted Bar charges.

Yes, there are many extras and add-on services and options available to enhance your guests’ experience and make your party special and memorable, including the following: private bar with dedicated bartenders, cocktail bar, chilled bottles of wine, wine flights, coffee station, outside catering, limo / shuttle service, rentals (furniture, linens, place settings, tents, decorations, etc.), photo booth, extended hours (past our normal business hours), live music / DJ, karaoke, games (cornhole, bingo, axe throwing).
