About this venue

We operate two related spaces two blocks apart - the Sumner Center (indoor) and the Edwin Smith House grounds (outdoor). The Sumner Center is a newly renovated event space in historic downtown Wellington Kansas. We emphasize comfort, accessibility, inclusivity and adaptability within an industrial style space. We sport a mid-century modern influenced decor that we soften with fabric and flowers. Within the Sumner Center we also host local artists, music and entrepreneurial events in an effort to support downtown revitalization. The Edwin Smith House, built in the 1930s, is a pink, Spanish Revival structure on the National Historic Register. The grounds are available for outdoor weddings, reunions, and engagement photos. Installation of fencing, fountains, and flowers are planned. The combination of the Sumner Center and the Edwin Smith House allows us to provide the benefits of both indoor and outdoor, modern and historic within a 5 minute walk. This newly renovated blank slate space features exposed brick and 15ft high ceilings. Thermal energy storage adds to guest comfort in this energy efficient, fire sprinkled. ADA accessible space. Art panels, pipe and drape, ceiling drape and built in customizable lighting all provide a head start in creating a truly unique experience.

Outdoor ceremonies and receptions on grounds of 1930s Era Historic Spanish Revival Style Home

The side yard of the 1930s Spanish Revival Edwin Smith House is available for engagement and anniversary photos, wedding ceremonies and receptions. The home, also known locally as the " Pink House" was added to the National Register of Historic places in 2004. Fountains and landscaping enhancements are being added. The space can be available with or without use of the Sumner Center event space a block and a half away.

Amenities included, but not the following which are available at additional charges: furniture, tablecloths, drape, lighting enhancement, liability insurance, or security.

    Great Facility to Work With

    We celebrated our 20th High School Class Reunion at The Sumner Center. Working with Barry and Becky was easy and wonderful! We very much appreciate their hospitality and generosity. The space was very clean and exceptionally cool temperature wise during the extreme heat. We loved having nice big bathrooms with lots of stalls to handle our large guest volume. Thank you, Summer Center team!

Yes. We include Client purchased Event Liability Insurance in our pricing for the "1892 Package" and above, and simplify the process of obtaining it. Additional insurance for weather or related cancellation factors is available at the Client's option and expense.
Yes, provided that it needs to be served by a licensed and insured bar caterer.
Street parking and the City lot (between the Sumner Center and the Edwin Smith House) is available for free. Valet services can be added.

The Sumner Center is located roughly a half hour from the Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport (commercial flights). The City of Wellington's Municipal Airport (KEGT) is three miles away by car (private flights).
Booking fees for our facilities, and all payments made including deposits, are non-refundable. If you cancel your event within 40 days of your booked date, we’ll bill you the full amount of all estimated charges.
Yes. Since the Sumner Center is within City limits, it is appropriately fire sprinkled in compliance with the current Building Code. The event use at the Edwin Smith House is presently outdoor only.
Yes. The Sumner Center can be divided into separate ceremony and reception areas. We do not charge extra for your having both a ceremony and reception at the Sumner Center. Use of the Edwin Smith House grounds for a ceremony is also a possibility.
We do not accept referral fees from other vendors that we do not disclose to the couple. In the context of a preferred vendor this may mean that credits are available to you should you select that vendor. In addition we do not pay referral fees to other vendors that may refer you to us. Ultimately, undisclosed fees just result in your paying a higher price.
Yes, couples may bring in any vendor that they have contracted with, provided, that the vendor provides us the required insurance and licensing certifications in advance of the Event.
Yes, there is optional insurance for your benefit that can be added to the required event insurance.
Our "School Lunch" Package includes 10 hours of event time, 2 hours of decoration and 2 hours of cleanup. Basic tables/seating - our School Lunch tables - is included. A Venue Representative is present during set up, the Event and clean up.

Yes, we are happy to provide this for your use.
Our system features a "soft start" that ramps up slowly, so there is no abrupt noise when it comes on. In addition, our ducting system in the main event is fabric - leading to lower noise. Ever hear of "The Sphere" in Las Vegas? The same engineer that handled that venue also design our fabric duct system.
Yes, or "art panels" can be used for display of photos, decor, or to help create your own experience. Moving the panels - including to segment off areas - needs to be planned in advance and done by Sumner Center staff.
