Obtaining a Hawaii marriage license is a 2-step process. First, you apply online here: https://health.hawaii.gov/vitalrecords/marriage-licenses/ You can select your officiant from the drop-down list (my clients select Fiala, Michele L). The next step is an in-person license pickup with both of your IDs, not more than 30 days before the ceremony. You can return to the same page: https://health.hawaii.gov/vitalrecords/marriage-licenses/ and scroll down to the green button that says "Schedule Appointment" for the Department of Health in Honolulu or the link for "Current List of Agents" for other islands/areas. I'm happy to help with this step!
The State of Hawaii does not require witnesses for weddings. Within 30 days before your ceremony, you will appear together before the state license agent with your IDs to pick up your Marriage License Worksheet. You will list your officiant (Fiala, Michele L for my clients). Please bring that printed worksheet to your ceremony and the three of us we will sign it after the ceremony, along with your framable, commemorative certificate.
On the same day I perform your ceremony, I finalize your marriage in the state system and provide you with the Locator ID. In 2 business days, you will receive your electronic marriage certificate from the Department of Health, which is valid for name changes and other documents. Within 4 weeks, you will receive the printed certificate at the mailing address you list at the time of your application.
Yes, marriage in Hawaii is recognized nationally and internationally. If you live in the US, you will need only to present your Hawaii marriage certificate in your state of residence. If you live in a foreign country, you may also need an apostille to verify the authenticity of your marriage certificate. Please check the requirements of your country of residency in advance to ensure a smooth process.
